Andy Elliott | 1446 comments Has anyone had a look at the KDP Pricing Support service? I've only just spotted it in the Rights and Pricing section of my Bookshelf. Basically it gives you a rough idea of what other books in the same genre of yours with a similar length etc have been priced at and how well they've sold. It's very basic at the moment, and wants to me to hike both my books up by a buck but interesting nevertheless.

D.M. (dmyates) I have not, but what a great help. I must use this service.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments I was selling my thriller at £2.49 and it was selling rather well. The pricing support suggested £4.99, so I tried it for a week. Sales stopped. So I put it back to £2.49 and sales have continued as before.

If you've a name like Child or Patterson, I suppose £4.99 is a bargain, but for customers of my books, that price appeared unattractive.

Worth a go though; you can always put the original price back.

Tim | 8539 comments Yeah, it says for mine: sell it cheap!

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Same here for the fantasy. I left it at mid, same as the thriller.

message 6: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments So what's the suggested price point for a 70K word fantasy or SF novel?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ah. You don't get that screen, eh Jim?

Help Jim out, darlings.

message 8: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Doesn't work like that, Jim. You have to go into your bookshelf, select the book, and there's a click button just above the pricing options.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Jim has a publisher, though.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Fuel to the Fire is 53,000 words and it suggests £1.78/$2.99. I'm giving that one for free though.

I don't think it takes the word count into account so much as the genre.

message 11: by Andy (new)

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments It claims word (or page) count is considered, along with genre, target age etc.

message 12: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments thanks for that all, I'm not on kdp so I don't see this stuff

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Andy wrote: "It claims word (or page) count is considered, along with genre, target age etc."

I'm sceptical of those claims. The 3rd book of my trilogy is double the word count, but it still suggested the same price as the 1st.

message 14: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I suspect it only tales account of the US market, so "only sold 3" rather overshadows the word count... (dunno, only guessing)

message 15: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments When your series is complete, Tim, put the first on a countdown deal, organised with advertising on as many sites as you can get to list it. That's when it'll kick in.

message 16: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Yeah, realistically I don't expect a lot of traction before the series is complete - it's another disadvantage of being an Indie (trad authors don't seem to suffer from Incomplete Series Sickness to anything like the same degree)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I dunno Tim.

I don't take indie or trad into account with series. I prefer all the books to be available before I start, either way.

message 18: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments Wonder if the recommend the same price points to big 6 publishers?

;-)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments My latest, historical romance, was given a recommended price point of $2.99 but when I see the 'Also Boughts' many are much cheaper. 77c is not unusual so it is difficult to know whether to hold to the $2.99 and at least feel that when a sale is made I get a little money for my hard work and ODN is allowed a KCD, or to join in with the 'Also Boughts' and go for an increase in sales.

I tried dropping the price with my first book and the sales did increase for a month or two, but then tailed off and overall I made less money.

Dilemmma.

message 20: by S. (new)

S. Aksah | 152 comments I'm going to put my second short story at 2.99 for 17K and I'm determined to keep it at that price sale or no sale :) Lol! My first short story is now at 99c although I priced it at 2.99 earlier on and it did make a few sale.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sorry S, I wouldn't pay that for a short story.

message 22: by S. (new)

S. Aksah | 152 comments Yup still wouldn't budge! Lol!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Your call, of course.

message 24: by Andy (new)

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments My pricing follows this rough guide:

<50k words: £0.99
50-100k: £1.99
100k+: £2.99

Has worked okay for me so far.

message 25: by David (new)

David Hadley As my short stories emerge out of KDP select I'm putting them up for free on Smashwords (when I get round to reformatting them, that is).

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hopefully amazon will price match and that will generate sales of your long stuff, David.

How many will there be? Would you be better to publish them as a collection?

As a reader, I'd find that more convenient.

I think there are 3 individual short stories out there and a novella (Which you've already got).

I was thinking of putting them together in a collection too, along with another horror/thriller/mystery type unpublished short, say at 99p, or something like that.

I have got another collection of shorts already out that I may take some out of and put up individually for free.

I am coming around to the opinion that the only way for readers to know if your stuff is worth paying for is to give them some for free, so they can see if you are worth spending money on.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Gotta say that's how I'm discovering new authors, David.

I gotta do an indie gorge soon. I seem to be in a trad rut at the moment.

I look at it like those free samples they give out in supermarkets and places like that.

I've got a mixture of both in my unread collection on my Kindle. Sometimes, I think it takes longer to decide what to read next than it does to read it.

I'm sure some of us could post some nice big pictures of covers to help you decide.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Stop it, you two.

I've got a TBR ten kilometres long.

So size does matter?
