Elle East | 1 comments I read this book about ten years ago. From the prologue, it was implied that the main character, a young woman or possibly even a teenager, was a secret princess or heir to some kingdom, but she was hidden. She was hidden as a baby and was not aware of who she was.

The MC goes to work as a lady in waiting or a maid for a Lady. The Lady is generally nice to her, but her son tries to sexually assault the MC, but she escapes. The Lady finds the MC distraught, but she won't tell her what happened.

The lady's evil son is having an affair with another lady in waiting. When the other lady in waiting becomes pregnant, she goes to the son's parents, the Lord and Lady, and tells them that he raped her, and they force him to marry her.

The scene I remember the most is when the Lady looks a commissioned portrait of her family and realizes that her son was painted to look sinister. It's then that she realizes her son was evil all along and she was blind to his true nature. Just to be completely clear, the son is clearly the villain of the story, and at no point considered a romantic interest. This was NOT a romance novel. However, there are explicit sex scenes.

This all happened in the first half of the novel (I never finished because it was so disturbing but it has haunted me not knowing how it ended!) I wish I had more details but it was so long ago that this is all I can remember. I believe it may have even been the beginning of a series revolving around the MC's claim to a throne?

I considered it a no magic fantasy because there was no magic but it was set in a medieval castle, and revolved around a secret princess, which seems like a very formulaic fantasy.

Elle ~~
You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 35 where fewer eyes will see it.
Good luck!
