The book is about a boy living I think with his gandfather and how he with the help of the local Indians tracks and catches a horse named Yucca.

The book is from the I think 70's. I read it and owned it around 84.
Sadly I don't remember any drawings. If it helps his grandfather trades a cuckoo clock to the Indians to help the kid, who are always stopping by to visit.

Ooh, pretty sure I have it: it's not on Goodreads yet, but Ride the Pale Stallion by Gus Tavo. The title horse is named Yucca and the boy's family has a prized cuckoo clock that I believe is eventually given in trade.
