This is a saga fantasy adventure book. Probably in the young adult section.

The main plot is a boy who was somehow woken to this unknown land that has a steampunk western setup. He ends up fighting and befriending some native Indian style tribe. There is distinctly a big battle where a gigantic double headed vulture is sliced to death by a triangle shaped canyon. The characters did this by distracting the heads into opposite directions as the bird pursued flight around the canyon.

What is is also unique are the covers that had these cool worn manuscript sketches consisting of giant mechanical rhinos/or whales, the sketches were complete with interiors living arrangements and architectural support.

I remember reading it in my school library pre 2011. They never got another one of the books from this saga and now grown up I do not know the name :(
