Rachel | 3524 comments Please post all comments/questions/updates about the fall 2018 reading challenge in this thread. :)

The Fall 2018 Reading Challenge will start on September 12th and end November 30th.

Rules of the Challenge:

Read 3 books (or more)
Complete 3 tasks (or more)
Any genre ok
Rereads ok

So this fall complete 3 (or more) of the following:

1. Several authors celebrate their birthdays this season.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WRITTEN BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

N.K. Jemisin (September 19th)
Anne Tyler (October 25th)
Neal Shusterman (November 12th)
Ruta Sepetys (November 19th)

2. September is Be Kind To Editors & Writers Month.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH THE LETTERS
K-I-N-D IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE.

3. The Great American Read is a limited series airing this fall on PBS. One hundred books are nominated.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK ON THE LIST.

4. Frankenstein Friday is celebrated on the last Friday in October.

So this fall,

READ FRANKENSTEIN
or
READ ANY BOOK IN WHICH ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IS A MONSTER.

5. A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in theaters on November 16th, 1984..

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH THE WORD “NIGHTMARE “ IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE.
or
READ A BOOK IN WHICH ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IS HAVING NIGHTMARES.
or
READ A BOOK THAT FEATURES A CHARACTER NAMED FREDDY( any form of this name is ok).
or
READ A BOOK WRITTEN BY AN AUTHOR NAMED FREDDY (any form of this name is ok).

6. Widows will be released in theaters November 16th, 2018. The screenplay is co-written by Gillian Flynn. It stars Viola Davis. It’s about a group of women recently widowed. Their husbands were criminals and owe some bad men a lot of money so the widows plan a heist.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK IN WHICH THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A WIDOW.
or
READ A BOOK WRITTEN BY GILLIAN FLYNN.

7. Random Task- This task counts towards the challenge but is not inspired by the season.

Three movies are being released in theaters in the next few months that deal with individuals finding their voice. Two of the movies actually come out in the fall but the third will be released in theaters on Christmas.

The Hate U Give -(October 19th) based on the book

Boy Erased (November 2nd) based on the book

On the basis of sex (December 25th) not based on a book but it’s inspired by the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

So this fall,

CHECK OUT THE TRAILERS, READ THE BOOKS, READ ABOUT RBG.
or
READ ANY BOOK THAT FEATURES AN INDIVIDUAL FINDING HIS/HER VOICE.

HAPPY AUTUMN, EVERYONE! :D

I have started re-reading Stay Awake by Dan Chaon. This is a short story collection in which several stories feature characters with nightmares.

I've been looking at books that will work with this Fall Reading Challenge.

The PBS 100 Great American Reads offer lots of variety to choose from. From that list, I'm planning to read the following (and maybe more if I get around to it):
Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon Looking for Alaska by John Green Ghost (Track, #1) by Jason Reynolds

I haven't read any of the authors who have birthdays - from that list, the author Neal Shusterman seems most intriguing to me and I'm going to try Bruiser first.
Bruiser by Neal Shusterman

Christine | 798 comments Hey Everyone......sorry to be behind on this challenge. I was back in Colorado helping out with my son and his wife. My daughter in law was in the hospital. It was pretty scary for a few days but she is headed back to her healthy life. I tell you, and you all know this, appreciate every day because you never know when something is going to blindside you. Anyway, I am home again and ready to be back to normal. The Fall Challenge looks great. Thank you Rachel! I will set my goal and have some recommendations for reads on the challenge later on today. I've missed you guys.

Christine | 798 comments I read the book The Hate U Give. I HIGHLY recommend reading it. I also want to see the movie. It might be something we can do a group read on, separate from the challenge. There's lots to think about in that book.

I will definitely look into The Hate U Give as soon as I have room ob my library card to request it. Thanks for the recommendation 🙃😍

The PBS list has a lot of great books on it-I’m not sure which title (s) I’m going to read for the challenge yet-been thinking about The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton -I loved that movie when I was younger but have never read the book.

I really liked Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon . I haven’t read Ghost (Track, #1) by Jason Reynolds but I really liked his book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds .

Christine | 798 comments Is anyone watching The Great American Read on PBS........I'm totally book geeking out over it. I think its really well done and inspiring me to read a lot of books on the list as well as re-reading some of my favorites.

How many books have you read on the list?

I watched the initial special that aired before the actual series started and the whole list was mentioned. There are so many books that I want to read on the list-I think i’ve read 21 of the books-don’t remember how many others are on my tbr. I especially loved Gillian Flynn’s comments but also just loved hearing everyone talk about their favorites.

I am currently reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I've attempted it before but never succeeded. The main character is a widow(er) so I'm going to use it for the Fall Challenge.

Awesome choice ! :D
I think you can vote for multiple books if you’d like which is what I might do -don’t think I can narrow it down to just one. :)

Christine | 798 comments There's a lot of good ones on the list. I keep watching the show and have added a few to my TBR list. It never seems to go down, lol.

Rachel | 3524 comments I finished Wishful Drinking Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher for the kind task. Recommend the audiobook.

message 28: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments I just finished A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership and while I considered counting it as a book with monsters in it, I decided people might not take it as the joke it was meant to be. I do encourage people to read it. His epilogue is hopeful especially after the dark days we have experienced leading up to the latest Supreme Court battle. It wasn't a book I considered reading but my sister encouraged it and loaned me her copy. I'm glad I did. If anything, read the epilogue.

Christine | 798 comments i just finished a book about a widow This Is Your Life, Harriet Chance!, about what you would expect, sometimes funny, sometimes sad. It definitely explores the relationships we have with our parents, our partners and our children. I liked that it was set in the Northwest.

I have finished 5 out of 10 books for the Fall Reading Challenge. We have about one more month! At my current work, I'm able to listen to audiobooks so I'm getting through quite a few books lately.

I'm currently reading the following books which all work toward the Fall Reading Challenge:
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I plan to start the following one this week:
Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian

Christine | 798 comments I don't think this was the type of book you had in mind when you added K-I-N-D to the challenge......I read The Walking Dead, Book Fifteen (The Walking Dead #169-180) by Robert Kirkman . They have added a great new character, Princess, watch out when she has to put her goggles down, lol.

Happy Halloween Everyone! Have lots of treats and few tricks, lol.

Greetings Rachel!
Things are overall well. I'm flying through audiobooks working in the warehouse and having fun working at the movie theater on weekends.

It's getting a little bit colder in Colorful Colorado, which always makes scootering a bit tricky but I'm going into my sixth winter as a scooterist and have a good amount of scoot life experience to carry with me. I'd much rather ride Hooter the Orange Scooter than take the bus whenever possible.
