Tammy | 4 comments Paperback read in the mid 90's. Characters met to discuss art and metaphysical subjects, possibly a café being the primary setting. A "doorway" or "entrance" to a surreal alternate reality was opened and characters had to choose to join this "place", or not to join. I may be remembering some details inaccurately, as memory is a weird thing, but if this story rings a bell, please help! Thanks

Did this take place in the U.S., or some other country?

message 3: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 4 comments It may have been Paris, but I'm not 100%

El | 502 comments This sounds vaguely familiar to me too, Tammy. You said you read it in the mid-90s... do you have any idea when it might have been published?

message 5: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 4 comments I think it was fairly new at the time (early-mid 1990's) because it was a public library paperback.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Foucault's Pendulum popped up when I searched for fiction + metaphysical + paris.

Do you remember what genre would best describe the book? Satire, suspense, mystery, etc?

Anything about the cover?

message 7: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 4 comments I remember nothing about the cover. No, it wasn't Foucault's pendulum, but thanks for suggestion. For genre I think it was kind of a psychological mystery, but not a mystery in the true genre definition.

Were the characters French, American, or something else?

message 9: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Here's a free 'bump' for fall. Come back in a few months to bump again, ok? Otherwise, as we do housekeeping on threads, we might conclude that this thread has been 'abandoned' and move it to the Abandoned folder.

(Do not consider this thread as abandoned, I will follow it).

Mir | 805 comments This is a really unlikely guess, but Max Ernst wrote a bit of fiction, as did some of his fellow artists.

Lou Rocama | 457 comments Maybe the collection 5 Novels: Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars / Slaves of Spiegel / The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death / The Last Guru / Young Adult Novel?

Young Adult Novel has a bunch of kids that devote themselves to Dadaism.

Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy From Mars involves going to parallel realities.

Published 1997, although the books included are older.
