A fiction book- about a boy who somehow traveled back in time and stayed with an artist's family

I don't remember what year I read this book, but I remember it was about a boy who somehow traveled back in time. He was taken in by a family in which the father was an artist. I remember that somehow the boy's mother had been there before him and the artist had fallen in love with her. The end is pretty blurry, but I do remember that in the end (minor spoiler ahead) it was discovered that the artist's paints were possessed by another dead artist and the signatures melted off the paintings to reveal the dead artist's signature. I also remember arbitrary detail like how they weeded the garden and the boy accidentally pulled up the roses or that he told the family that he was homeless and sometimes traded work for showers. I think that roses might have been significant in some way but I'm not sure.
