Steph (angel4492) | 32741 comments The Bite That Binds (Deep In Your Veins, #2) by Suzanne Wright
The Bite that Binds by Suzanne Wright
Series: Deep in Your Veins #2
Shelf: own-it
Read: 28 Sept
Rating: ✮✮✮✮½

Review:
The Bite That Binds picks up right after Here Be Sexist Vampires and nine nights before Sam binds to Jared, the Heir of the Grand High Master Vampire. Binding was a week-long event that culminated in a wedding-type ceremony. The guests would all arrive in two evenings’ time, and entertainment would be provided each and every night as part of the celebrations. I loved all the nightly parties and gatherings, as much as Sam. Her gift to Jared, a prenuptial agreement, was hilarious.
“All I can tell you without possibly meddling with the future is that you have a difficult time ahead of you, Sam. I know you do not like to rely on others, but you must accept what support Jared tries to give you. You’re going to need it.”
Several incidents and assignments could put a damper on their party plans - a familial loss; the appearance of the one who Turned Jared and twin brother; the discovery of crazed, deformed vampires; and the theft of human babies. Thankfully, these two are open with each other albeit sometimes only after nagging and/or teasing. These events only bring the two closer.

I did feel their binding - considering it's forever-forever - was happening a bit soon after meeting, but then realized we really don't know how much time has passed since they first met. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. It's nice sticking with the main couple, but I'm also looking forward to Evan getting a HEA, as well as Salem and others.

In the Wreckage by Hailey Turner
Shelf: Military
Date Finished: 9/30/2018
Rating: 2 Stars
Review:
This was chosen because I needed a fit for a challenge with a military listopia. I don't enjoy most military books, especially not military and romance, so the lower rating is more due to my personal peeves than the content. The characters were actually fine for the most part, although I wish the powers were more interesting, and I especially liked the bond between the brothers. Intimacy had its moments but it was way overdone and dragged on too long to where it's boring. I'm not into the one night stand starts either since I don't care about the relationship yet - I prefer romance over erotica fiction any day. Surprisingly the military assignments weren't as boring as I figured, although of course the chain of command and duties grated me a bit later on, but I found myself enjoying the team interaction more than I did between the two mains Jaime and Kyle. Go figure. Writing style was actually good, awkward bedroom slang aside, and the author does a pretty good job writing intense mush scenes at least.

Thank you! I'm just not into most military stuff with fiction, so bias may have had to do with it.

I signed up for the audible romance trial and they were on the list... So I'm back after this series. This phase of my life has turned crazy busy and Audio I can do while on the go... I didn't realize how hard it has become to find time quiet time to sit and read. I can't even count on insomnia spells for late night reading anymore... I'm either to exhausted to have them or my keto diet has changed my sleep habits. So I'm thankful for good audio options.

Moonlight Betrayal: A Reverse Harem Shifter Romance

Date Finished: 10/4/2018
Rating: 3 Stars
Shelf: Paranormal Romance
Review:
Just as good as the others but a bit slower rating because the thing with Kage kind of dragged out. I would have liked a lot more private time with them once it had been resolved but it didn't happen until 87% in. I was ready to strangle him myself by that point. The vampire stuff was interesting and the Words with Friends a hoot. The pack is showing a darker side, which showed another interesting subplot to the story. I liked the brother and his help. There's not quite the same amount of humor but the adorableness is still as strong - the wool ball, the fetch, the paws.

It really is! It's a Reverse Harem Slow Burn Romance Paranormal - I've been devouring these books, the author releases a new one like every two months. The next is out in November :)

Book: Troubling a Star (Austin Family, #5) by Madeleine L'Engle
Date Read: 10/3
Rating: 3. 5 stars
How it fits: Shelved Own It by 1 person

Review: I like the Austin family. I really want to like the books. But I find they move slowly, with lots of stuff not well explained. You're thrown into the middle of stuff, and you have to try to pierce together what's going on, without many clues. Sometimes that works, but there's just enough clues here. And, as with the previous one I read, the ending/resolution feels rushed. I loved L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time books, but I only like the Austin Family series.

Review: These are a guilty pleasure to me. The writing isn't the greatest. The sex is . . . dirty. Very dirty. But the characters. I enjoy the characters. And that makes me feel like one of those people who claims to read Playboy/Penthouse for the articles. But I like them. And I like that the plus size, curvy girls get the hot, alpha shifter. And they are super quick reads. So, if it sounds like I'm conflicted, it's because I am. That's why they don't have a star rating from me, either. :)

Don't be embarrassed. Plenty of us SOSers (mods included) read some of smexier series :D

For your rating, just base it on how much you did or didn't enjoy it. Easy peasy. :)

Taste of Torment by Suzanne Wright
Series: Deep in Your Veins #3
Shelf: paranormal romance
Read: 5 Oct
Rating: ✮✮✮✮½

Review:
Taste of Torment picks up five months after The Bite That Binds . Antonio, Grand High Master, tells Sam and Jared that he's tired and ready to live his life with the one he loves; he's stepping down in two months and wishes them to ascend to Grand High Pair. Both knew this time would come and they're ready, however they plan to make some changes.
“... any vampire out there - would understand that putting their mate first is what a vampire does.”
Vamp siblings from Sam's past come to the Hollow seeking help; a mission leads to several vampires becoming infected with a deadly, incurable virus; and representatives from the Prelature (... "a body of vampire ministers [who] had the authority to enforce order") come to the Hollow claiming to have received complaints about Sam's method of training.

I continue to enjoy learning more about Sam and Jared, as well as the other members of their squad. It's always a benefit when you come into a series late because you can read the books back-to-back without a long wait.

I know lots do read them. A bunch of my GR friends included. I don't judge, but they are way outside of anything I read. So I'm embarrassed that I'm so captivated by them. I've read 12 of them since Sunday. I'm barely going to get my required book done before check-in tomorrow night for another team challenge. So, I just click the "no rating" when I mark them as read. But I've added a rating to my original post. :)

Shelf: Shelf - Favorites
Pages: 352
Rating: ★★★★★

Review: Knox and Harper are still on the hunt for the elusive fourth horseman and Althea seems to be one of the first victims this round. When the threat is aimed at Archer, there is no place for him/her to hide from the Ma and Da demons... Trouble is trying to keep the secrets of hellfire and Knox and Archers demon types from the demon population when tempers are up. Harper also has to contend with a love interest from her past and Knox is extremely jealous. Poor hellcat. This was great wrap up to this series. Super happy with the storyline and closure. Very excited about the secondary characters chance to have their stories told. Those will be on my "must buy" list.

I haven't seen it, but that's a good thing in this case since I usually like reading the book first and then seeing how they compare. For some reason if I watch the movie first sometimes I struggle to get into the book.

Title/Author:
Phantom Shadows by Dianne Duvall
Series: Immortal Guardians #3
Date Read: 10/9/2018
Shelf: Shelf - Paranormal Romance
Pages: 390
Rating: ★★★1/2☆

Review: This is the third book in the Immortal Guardian series and follows Bastien, who is extremely disliked by the other Immortals for being basically a vampire sympathizer. He was the bad guy in book one. His former crew was made up of vampires and a few are now in the custody of the Network being monitored by Dr. Melanie Lipton. Melanie is a gifted one that is studying the progression of the vampire virus and ways to treat the affected. A big baddie has super soldiers targeting vampire hunting grounds, kidnapping vamps for live dissecting, etc., with plans to exploit his findings and victims for profit. So Melanie is crushing on cranky pants Bastien, who is also attracted to her but afraid of the damage a relationship with him will cause with her colleagues. Thank goodness she is a strong willed chick and takes charge and pursues him. It doesn't take much convincing... I listened to this one in audio and it was good. Anxious to get started on the next one with the little twist with Amy at the end.

But... Our girls are now 11-0 and clinched the Section title tonight and a guaranteed spot in playoffs. Woot Woot!
