Darryl | 16 comments Well, old sleuth I suppose. I was a Detective for nine years and have recently left the job to pursue a career in teaching and find more time to write. As I'm sure you can imagine, or maybe some of you know firsthand, the nature of the job doesn't allow a great deal of time for hobbies.

I've joined goodreads to meet likeminded people and expand my reading experience by finding new authors and friends.

I hear there's a great community here and I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Darryl

Hi Darryl;
I am new, as well. A detective? How very interesting. I imagine your former career can certainly be a source of enlightenment.

Darryl | 16 comments Hi Skye, nice to meet you.

It's a great job and it's more than likely I'll go back to it someday. It's definitely given me plenty of stories over the years.

What brought you to Goodreads? And don't say your internet browser... ;)

Skye | 2105 comments Hi there, Darryl; I read and adore crime novels, mysteries and suspense thrillers; I would have been a great detective; however, I teach Englih and writing arts, write when I have time ( which is practically never) but I do read as much as I can.

message 5: by Darryl (new)

Darryl | 16 comments They say writers in general would make good Detectives simply because of the amount of detail they have to know about their stories and characters.

I'm teaching English as a second language out in Korea at the moment. It's an enjoyable job, but tough at times!

message 6: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments Darryl; how amazing: I can well imagine some difficulties in cultural mores. I have had Korean students and their protocol is so very different---they consider it a lack of respect to look directly at someone when they speak--someone unfamiliar----I hope the climate is nice and what a sensational experience.

Welcome, Darryl! I don't believe we've ever had a detective joining us before!

I've experienced so many cultural differences since I've been out here. It's been tough and frustrating at times, but the longer I stay here, the more I am understanding about their way of life and my own attitudes towards certain things. It's been a very enlightening and self-reflective few months!

Thank you, Nancy, it's nice to be here. I must admit, I'm new to these kinds of forums, so I'm looking forward to joining in on the boards.

Thanks, Malina. When I introduced myself to the class, they loved the fact I was a Detective. There's a Japanese anime cartoon called Conan the Detective which is popular out here and every so often I'm sure I hear "Conan Teacher!" shouted across the playground. By the time I turnaround, the culprit has invariably disappeared. Nine year olds are surprisingly quick (at everything other than completing tasks in class!).

In my weaker moments, I sometimes wish had my Police powers out here.....they'd be a lot quieter I reckon! :)

Hi Jane, thanks for welcoming me. At the moment, I'm reading JK Rowling's venture into the genre. I'm enjoying it so far. I've read a few of the Rebus novels, a few of Stephen King's books as well as Tess Gerritson and Dean Koontz. I'm reading a lot more crime fiction now I'm no longer in the job. I look forward to sharing book recommendations with you.

Thanks, Bill, nice to meet you. In fact, whilst I have you, as a mod, I have a quick newbie question. I've just replied to everyone individually above, which I prefer to do as they've taken the time to say hi, but I was wondering if this was the best method as it flags up a lot of notifications etc, which may get annoying for people. Sorry, that was a terrible sentence, I clearly need to read more (I think I'm in the right place for that)!

Is it better to reply as above to keep the conversations clearer or is it better to reply once and mention everyone in that? I'm new to these kinds of boards in general and need to learn the etiquette!

Thank you

Hi Darryl, Welcome to the group.

It can go both ways, and you can choose which works best for you. If your answer are long, or specific, you might want to keep them separate, but again it's your choice.

The important thing is to have fun.

And read, of course.

Jon Kurtz (jondkurtz) | 132 comments Hello Darryl,

First, welcome to the group. I think you'll find the conversations intriguing, even if you just lurk for a while. Second, nice to have a fellow LE on board. I'm recently retired after 27 years, many as an investigator and investigative supervisor. Feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

Take care,

Jon

Hi Jon, thanks for the welcome!

27 years is definitely an achievement to be proud of. Miss it? I've found it's a mentally that never really leaves you!

Thanks for the offer, I may well be in touch with some questions about the American system ( I worked in the UK). I imagine there are a lot of interesting differences (although the nature of the work is the same the world over!). Feel free to do the same, once I'm fully up and running on here, I'll post something offering advice for authors/readers on any queries they may have that'll help their work/enjoyment of their books.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Zoe,

I see you're from Windsor, I have fond memories of a school trip to the castle when I was younger. Nothing to do with the history of the place, I just got to sit next to my childhood crush on the coach there. I was far too nervous to strike up a real conversation, but she did give me a haribo (a ring shaped one no less!).

It's a nice part of the world, looking forward to chatting on here!

We think along the same lines. If someone's taken the time to write to me, I prefer write a personal response. Looking forward to joining in on the boards!

Darryl - you're right, the mentality never changes. As for missing it, I haven't totally "unplugged," so the missing hasn't set in yet. Back to you, good luck and be safe!
