After updating your progress on the book you are currently reading, add one quotation you have read that you found interesting. Then, discuss why you found it significant and comment on three other posts from this class.

message 2: by John (last edited Sep 06, 2018 10:27AM) (new)

John Morse | 10 comments Unnecessary Roughness: Inside the Trial and Final Days of Aaron Hernandez is a brilliant book. It covers Aaron's last days through many viewpoints and intimate conversations. It's a good book! "A few calls later I realized it was true, Aaron was dead."

message 3: by Rhea (new)

Rhea Phagura | 7 comments "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."
I found this quote interesting because Helen Keller was only able to survive due to the support from her family and her teacher, Anne Sullivan. She couldn't have faced being blind and deaf without others to help her when she need it.

message 4: by Michael (new)

Michael Marutyan | 7 comments The Memoirs of Richard Nixon: "Nixon was taught to read by his mom before attending school, which allowed him to skip the second grade." Nixon skipped the second grade, smart man.

message 5: by Dylan (new)

Dylan D'Amico | 3 comments After reading about 45 pages of the book, i have learned how before Michael Jordan was born his family suffered greatly.Michael Jordan: The Life How he his family somehow got food on their plates very night and in 50 years had a son, grandson, cousin, uncle, etc. Who was making millions of dollars.

message 6: by Jacob (new)

Jacob | 9 comments "Each meeting begins with everyone silently reading the document, and discussion commences afterward-just like the productive-thinking exercise in the principal's office at River Oaks Elementary"(11). This quote is from "The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon". I found it significant as I learned that the small activities Bezos did in his childhood, still have an effect today. This demonstrates that education, even at a young age, can have profound effects.

message 7: by Sam (new)

Sam | 8 comments After reading 20 pages of this book, I already know more about Muhammad Ai and how he was viewed. He spoke on his loss to Ken Norton.

message 8: by Nico (new)

Nico Diamond | 8 comments “It was Bonnie Parker who supplied the unique ingredient: the image of the tiny feminine figure with a machine gun...” I found this quote interesting because this is also what I found intriguing about Bonnie and Clyde’s adventures.

message 9: by Jacob (new)

Jacob | 9 comments Michael wrote: "The Memoirs of Richard Nixon: "Nixon was taught to read by his mom before attending school, which allowed him to skip the second grade." Nixon skipped the second grade, smart man."

Nice quote! Nixon was crafty/clever so this makes sense

message 10: by Molly (new)

Molly Sheehan | 8 comments "Marilyn Monroe was in crisis. When she finished work on this picture, she had no further assignments. After today, she had nothing to do and nowhere to go. A career that meant everything to her might well be over" (Leaming, 6).

I found this quote significant because it shows how much Marilyn cares about her career and how much effort she puts into it.

message 11: by Dana (new)

Dana Chabrier | 8 comments "Oh, I could probably embellish a few incidents when I was awfully close to some big sharks, but the incidents all had happy endings". I find this quote interesting because of all the incidents she's had as a marine biologist, none of the contact she's had with sharks resulted in a blood bath or feeding frenzy. I find this amusing because while most people assume that that's most likely the case, it's very unlikely unless in a state of shock or panic. As an experienced diver, she's never once gone into panic or shock when face-to-face with a shark, and monstrous sharks at that.

message 12: by Sofia (new)

Sofia | 5 comments “I’ve got to tell you: Life was pretty good. I felt like the luckiest guy in the world.” (Simpson, 5) I found this quote interesting because his marriage was failing and his kids didn’t want to see him unless his new girlfriend was there. To any other person it would seem like his life was falling apart but to him, he feels like he was doing better then ever.

message 13: by John (new)

John Morse | 10 comments Michael wrote: "The Memoirs of Richard Nixon: "Nixon was taught to read by his mom before attending school, which allowed him to skip the second grade." Nixon skipped the second grade, smart man."

Damn Richard Nixon is such a cool guy. I hope you enjoy the book!

epic

message 16: by Martino (new)

Martino Curoso-Suarez | 4 comments "China was governed not by written laws but by the rulings of magistrates appointed by the emperor and her citizens traditionally viewed these mandarins as demi-gods." I found this significant because it's an insight into the way China was governed during this period, and how the people responded to this form of government.

In The Glass Castle, Jeanette Wall writes, " That was why we had to find gold . To get Mom a new wedding ring. That an so we could build the Glass Castle" (28).

I found this interesting because it reveals the meaning behind the title. The Glass Castle seems to also be a metaphor at this point in her life of the castle of lies her father has told them.

message 18: by Shiladitya (new)

Shiladitya Dutta | 8 comments "Hitler was rarely suspected of having anything to do with the disorganization, injustice, lawlessness, cruelty, and barbarity, that occurred in Germany and in the occupied territories". This quote interests me because it portrays how effective Goebbels's smokescreen was.

message 19: by Erica (new)

Erica Singh | 4 comments “The anatomist bordered on neceomancer” Its significant because it shows a point of view on how da Vinci would dissect human bodies to study their anatomy but others viewed his actions as necromancy.

message 22: by Maria (new)

Maria Figueroa | 2 comments "At the age of 14 I just remember thinking that I wasn't very good at anything, that I was hopeless..." Although this is a sad quote I find it very interesting because we see how her parents issues affected her and her siblings. Her parent's didn't check in with her or her siblings. She felt like she didn't have anyone to motivate her or any motivation. I also find interesting how her and her siblings noticed all of this.

Helen Keller’s biography must be super interesting

message 28: by Gisselle (new)

Gisselle Portillo | 6 comments After reading the first chapter of this book I have come to understand what his life was like on a daily basis and what he did as he was acting.I have seen part of his daily life through his eyes.

message 29: by Megna (new)

Megna | 7 comments "But I don't believe in fighting-even though my fourteen-year-old brother, Khushal, annoys me to no end. I don't fight with him. Rather, he fights with me. And I agree with Newton: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

- I found this significantly true I believe, and honestly really relatable.

Nico Diamond | 8 comments John wrote: "Unnecessary Roughness: Inside the Trial and Final Days of Aaron Hernandez is a brilliant book. It covers Aaron's last days through many viewpoints and intimate conversations. It's a good book!"

I like how this quote shows how much Helen Keller's teacher cares for her.

This seems to be interesting due investigating how neglect can affect a young child.

Justin Jones | 4 comments Into Thin Air: "Straddling the top of the world, one foot in China and the other in Nepal, I cleared the ice from my oxygen mask, hunched a shoulder against the wind, and stared absently down at the vastness of Tibet." (Pg. 7)

message 37: by Georgia (new)

Georgia | 4 comments I’ve read the first Chapter of a long way gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. I loved the quote “Perhaps it was necessary that he cling to false hopes, since they kept him running away from harm”. This was about a man who was running away from a war site with his dead child, and who kept saying he would save him and being him to the hospital. This quote is extremely powerful, and dives into deep human emotion and coping mechanisms.

message 38: by Max (new)

Max M | 8 comments Trump the Art of the Deal: I only just started reading this book, but I am very pleased with the style of writing thus far. Initially I believed this book to be a very boring book, on how to deal and make trades. But It is a story of his day to day life. "I enjoy seeing the lengths to which bad management go to preserve what call their independence--- which really just means their jobs." (Trump 3)

Ella | 9 comments "And he seemed to be offering himself as the very vision of what America should be - a place where races, class, and cultural differences mix together to make a republic whole, not to divide it"
Barack Obama is an embodiment of the culture of the United States as a whole. It is its own unit but with different factors and sub units that give it its character. The United States's foundation is the mix of different ideas from diverse peoples and Obama is an embodiment of it.

Emily | 8 comments Diana Her True Story: In Her Own Words
"...her mother, crunching across the gravel forecourt, the clunk of the car door being shut and the sound of a car engine revving and then slowly fading as her mother drove through the gates of Park House and out of her life" (121).
I found this quote significant because I never knew that Diana's parents were divorced and I cannot imagine what she felt like at this time. She was only 6 years old when her parents got divorced.

message 49: by Stanley (new)

Stanley | 7 comments "Don't stop. Don't ever think about stopping until you get there, and don't give much thought to where "there" is. Whatever comes, just don't stop" I found this quote interesting because this piece of advice can be applied to anything in life. Whether it's sports, school, or passions, in order to succeed you can't even consider giving up. Because once you diminish your efforts, it will all go downhill until you have nothing left. That is the difference between people who succeed and those who fail.
