I am looking for a book written either in the 80's or 90's that involved a group taking a trip trying to either earn extra credit or a final grade. First the adults become ill and tell the kids they can't go ahead but kids do anyway. Then one by one something happens to each kid till the end of the story. I remember there is a log pile and hot chocolate involved. I think a kid was name James or John.

Well now that I think about it...

In the early 90 there was a series called point thrillers( I think) they were written by different writers. You might want to check those out sound like it might be one of those. Pretty sure I have read this book.
Love these books in jr high. RL stine wrote some before he did fear street and goosebumps
