J.A. Lang (jalang) | 82 comments Been reading quite a bit of non-fiction this month. Recently finished Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals Succeed How We Can Reach Our Goals by Heidi Grant Halvorson and gave it five stars. Unlike other 'inspirational', goal-setting, motivational type books, this one is written by a proper academic from the field of social psychology, and the book is full of interesting insights and advice, such as:

- Trying to motivate certain types of people with encouragement can actually be detrimental
- Different motivations to think about depending on whether the path to your goal is easy or fraught with difficulties
- and all backed up with some fascinating studies (makes social psychology sound like quite a fun field!)

Best book of its type I've read so far. Definitely recommend.

I've just finished Unbinding, by Eileen Wilks, and I've loved it.

Unbinding (World of the Lupi, #11) by Eileen Wilks

message 4508: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just finished Suspect Suspect by Robert Crais by Robert Crais. It's been a long time since I gave a book 5 stars, but this book deserved it.

It was not just a really good mystery/thriller, it probably deserved 3.5 stars for that storyline alone. But add in the dog and relationship building and it shot up like a rocket!

Lynn (lynnali) | 524 comments I'm reading The State Counsellor, and while I have it shelved under my Mystery genre, I don't really think it counts as a "cozy" but I'm not far enough in to be sure it doesn't either.

I am currently re-reading books on my bookshelves that I read years ago, some of them as a teenager, interspersing them with the newbies in the TBR pile. I decided I've been hauling them around with me for a couple of decades and they deserve to be read again. It's fun to go back and read something again after so long and it's interesting to see how my perceptions of some of the books have changed.

message 4517: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool I do agree with going back and re-reading books is so much fun, it's like going and visiting an old friend that you haven't talked to in a long time.

MaryJo Dawson | 857 comments My son has been sending me books... his latest gift was Killing Patton The Strange Death of World War II's Most Audacious General by Bill O'Reilly , Bill O'Reilly and Marvin DuGard's latest.
I enjoy history and WWII history, so this has been a very interesting read. I've learned a lot more about General Patton, and many of the other characters who cross the pages.

It sounds like it is a really good book. I have a friend who would probably love to read this book. She reads all Non Fiction Books.

yes, do mention it. it is pricey right now, but of course there is the library, plus a short wait always reduces the cost of buying a previous best seller.

turns out my son gets a free ebook reader copy when he sends me one.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I've taken this week to flat out ignore my TBR pile in order to re-read old favourites but I've made an exception and I'm currently reading Persuasion. It's not a re-read, although Jane Austen is an old favourite. Loophole.

I approve the loophole, as I read and liked Persuasion in 2008. ☺ The only book of hers I do not like is Emma -- I tried reading it again a couple months ago, got halfway through and still haven't finished.

"Persuasion" is my absolute favorite Austen! I've always thought it the perfect autumn book.

Yeah, Emma is officially my least favourite Austen. I've read it twice and I understand its merits, but I don't like Emma very much (the character).

I finished it last night and I enjoyed it quite a bit, it's an excellent story - and it reads well in Spring too! (I'm in AU, so we're looking forward to summer here.) I'll still call P&P my favourite though; it just has that bit more frivolity to it that will keep me coming back again and again.

I think that's why I've had such difficulty finishing the book--I can't relate to or dislike every character.

one thing I should mention, Linda. the authors do a lot of quotes, and G.Patton cussed a lot. he had admirable qualities, and not so admirable ones.

I was going to start Hostage by Kay Hooper next, but decided on a short rom-suspense instead. I came down with a cold overnight, and my head is a bit too muzzy right now to keep track of Hooper's intricate plots. So, I'm reading one of my "autumn" books instead, Undercover Encounter by Rebecca York. NOT that I've gotten very far into that one, either. :-\

I finished Killing Patton The Strange Death of World War II's Most Audacious General by Bill O'Reilly , last week. It was great. Now my hubby is reading it and rereading a lot of it back to me. I don't mind so much but it doesn't play into Sullivan's Island (Lowcountry Tales #1) by Dorothea Benton Frank to well.

Finished Biting the Moon by Martha Grimes yesterday. A good mystery, though I would not call it cozy (particularly one scene near the end). Have already started book two, Dakota.

E.L. (elouisebates) I'm almost finished with The Ships of Air by Martha Wells. I've also been reading a lot of everyday, old-fashioned-ish stories lately, books by Miss Read and D.L. Stevenson. Something about this time of year that makes me crave that sort of story!

Debra (debrapurdykong) I'm nearly finished The Amber Wizard by David Forbes. I don't read a lot of this type of fantasy, but am really enjoying the story. The book's well written, engaging, and turning in quite a page-turner.
