Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading Divided in Death (In Death, #18) by J.D. Robb . I just love the In Death series. Part police procedural, part romantic suspense, part futuristic - all fun!

Despite how exhausted I was last night, I had difficulty sleeping, so decided to read. Although I am not yet done with Lolita (I'm past the halfway mark), I could not concentrate on those long, meandering paragraph's of Nabokov's, so I started The Phantom of the Opera and am already a quarter done. Who can resist a classic ghost story at this time of year? One thing that surprised me is how readable Leroux's style of writing is -- I have found myself simply flying through the chapters. The only downside? I haven't been able to get Think of Me out of my head all day. :-?

Caroline Kaiser (carolinekaiser) | 17 comments The most recent book I read was Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl. I thought it was very so-so--the story kept me going, but just barely, and I didn't like either of the main characters or find them especially compelling. I don't really understand what all the fuss is about over the book. Did anyone else feel the same way? Let's hope the movie is better! I think I'll now look for something with a historical theme, as I love being drawn into the past.

I am VERY ambivalent about that book!

message 4463: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Kaiser (carolinekaiser) | 17 comments Yes, I found myself right in the middle about it, Heidi. On the negative side, I found there was way too much swearing in it for my taste. On the plus side, there was plenty of story, and I was curious enough to want to see the book through to the end. Plenty of character development too, though they were not people I would ever want to know!

message 4464: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Caroline I equated that book to smelling something bad and wanting to share the smell with someone else in my review. You know you don't like it but you want someone else to share your pain if that makes sense!

message 4465: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Kaiser (carolinekaiser) | 17 comments Ha, that's exactly it! Smelling something bad is accurate, Heidi. I will look for your review. The book made me feel rather unclean, as if I needed to take a shower after finishing it. Not a sensation you want to be left with!

I've never seen the musical, and have vague recollections of scenes from the movie from when I was a kid. Would love to see the old B&W movie version now -- which will be shown here in town in a couple weeks, but doubt I'll be able to attend.

The book is a real page-turner. I was reading it during the football game today, and probably would have finished had our team not been so awesome this week. I'm only about 40-50 pages from the end, so you know what I'll be finishing before I go to bed tonight.

Exactly the reason I didn't read it, and avoid other books, too. When they leave a bad in your mouth....

Kim (skullfullofbooks) My next read that's non cozy will be Rex Appeal, though I can't add the ink in here. It's about the largest trex fossil fou d and the legal battle afterwards. Apparently the guy who discovered it wrote the book while in jail awaiting trial. I am super excited about it!

MaryJo Dawson | 857 comments I'm almost finished with The Tutor Rose by Margaret Campbell Barnes - and Goodreads does not have a link for this book, oddly, although they have others by this author - having decided to do some historical fiction for a change. It is an interesting read and an interesting take on the famous history of the War of the Roses, Richard the III, and Henry the VII, although the main focus is on Elizabeth, Henry's wife and the mother of the infamous Henry VIII.
If you like English historical fiction this may be for you. One oddity: it does not mention at all Richard being a humpback, which was legendary. Again, the age old question of who killed the boy princes, Elizabeth's brothers.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just started A Poisoned Season last night. Second in a new series for me and I've been pulled in immediately. Happiness is finding a new-to-me series that has a good half dozen books already published. :D

I don't like books with a lot of swearing in it either. I thought about picking it up because of the movie...And I wanted to see the movie only because Tyler Perry was in it! lol...I might just stick to watching the movie....:-)

Jean Harrington (wwwjeanharringtoncom) | 105 comments Just finished Daniel Silva's The Heist." Good as all of Silva's books undeniably are, but reminiscent of earlier stories in the series. An unavoidable happening when the same character reappears so many times, I guess. Still, a good spy story.

I finally - FINALLY! - finished Lolita last night. A little slow and plodding in parts but overall pretty good and not quite what I expected. Now if only I could find the energy and interest to go back and finish Emma, which I had set aside at the halfway point. I hate not finishing, but can't seem to get into it.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just finished reading Arcadian Genesis (Alex Hunter, #0.5) by Greig Beck by Greig Beck. It's not that long, a short novella or a long short story, take your pick. But it's a thrilling introduction to the characters and the series. Sort of a Special Forces X-Files.

Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

All of the first Ian Rutledge mysteries - about 8 or so - were gobbled up by me... including The Red Door. Later I was among those who got frustrated because Rutledge's recovery seemed to drag, and the stories got bogged down. I haven't read the last one or two, because other readers told me they also had this opinion.
I've enjoyed the Bess Crawford series, too.

Mary (resort) | 139 comments This cozy author is a fan of Stehen King and has just finished Mr. Mercedes. Mr. Mercedes King has been branching out from his horror genre into mystery, and this one's a winner. A retired cop is taunted by one of his unsolved cases and gets back in the game.
