Leslie I'm reading a biography of Virginia Woolf, Ulysses by James Joyce (both of these very slow-going) and listening to the audiobook Dracula

DonnaCarol | 316 comments I'm reading one that I got free for Kindle. "In The Blood" by Steve Robinson. It is "A Genealogical Crime" story. So far, I am very fond of this authors writing. Very descriptive. Pulls me into the scenery as well as what is happening. I do have a small issue with the confusing way he jumps from the past to the present day with no "heads up". But unless that gets much worse as the story progresses, then I have high hopes for this one. I also have to say that the subject matter is very close to my heart. I Love Genealogy and work with it almost every day so that does, in all honesty , give me an edge towards Mr. Robinsons book.Steve Robinson In the Blood (A Genealogical Crime Mystery #1) by Steve Robinson

I always have that problem with Johansen's books. I know when I start one that I am not going to be putting it down anytime soon.

I haven't heard of this author so I added him to my list. Have you read books by G.G. Vandagriff? She also writes mysteries involving genealogy. I also delve into family history regularly.

Barb | 1192 comments Late last night, I finished Silent Thunder for my F2F book club discussion. It's a thriller rather than a mystery, but I liked it a lot more than most of the rest of my book group did :)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I read Mansfield Park again.

A good book to reread. I know a lot of people don't like that one because of the heroine in it (feel she is too meek), but my least favorite of Austen's books is Emma. Just did not care much for that one.

Have made steady progress on Anna Karenina, though not as far into it as I'd like to be. I have finished part two and am several chapters into part three, about one-third finished. Was probably over-optimistic of me to hope I could finish in one week when I started it during fall premier week, lol.

No Vicky, I havent heard of G.G.Vandagriff but I just made a note to look for her books. I do love genealogy and Steve Robinson gets the adrenaline rush that we feel when we find that one clue/date/name that helps us bridge the span of time. I thoroughly enjoyed his book. It has a thriller edge without being gory and he lets the mystery shine while weaving in the hobby/job of genealogy. And the mystery was very well contrived. For the first time in a long time, I didn't have a clue whodunit until the ending. You may want to give this one a try. And thank you for the recomendation (G.G.Vandagriff)

Mansfield Park isn't my favorite to be sure. I didn't feel like she was too meek, but she was so virtuous as to look like a judgemental prude sometimes and Edmund even worse. But I do enjoy reading it in spite of this. I haven't read Emma yet - I've started it twice and put it down. It's not really grabbing me, I must say. :)

Finally passed the halfway point of Anna Karenina. Have you ever noticed that the third quarter of a really long book is always the hardest to push through?

Carol (carol121) | 22 comments Reading The Sixes by Kate White , so far it's really good. I started it as an audiobook but I don't think I can wait that long to read more. I'll probably end up aternating betweenlistening and reading. Anybody else do this?

message 2732: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1192 comments Alternate between reading and listening? I've only done that once, and I got myself so confused, I doubt I'll ever do it again LOL

Since I've started keeping track of character names, though, I've started bringing home the print copy of the audiobook I'm listening to, so I get the correct spelling of character names, etc.

That book -- The Sixes -- was one of my very first reads in 2012, and I *loved it! I always have a 'soft spot' for books set in Pennsylvania, but I found the story really engrossing too! I need to look into more of her books.

Finally finished Anna Karenina this week. Not being home three weekends in a row, it took me twice as long as it should have to read it, but was so worth it. Tolstoy has a more readable style than I expected.

Am now reading The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling, with a stack of cozies in the wings.

Lisa Malmquist | 225 comments For something totally different I like Rock music biographies and Clive Cussler books as well as Jack Higgins books. Or even Stuart Woods. The last are just good action, mystery or thriller without being about serial killers and lots of blood, which has gotten old for me.

Linda When I'm not reading a cozy, I read suspense novels, like Defending Jacob. So far it's okay, but from what I've seen in the reviews, it's the ending that stuns and surprises.

message 2746: by Denise (new)

Denise | 618 comments I just finished A Scent of Jasmine by Sylvia Nobel. She is the author of the Kendall O'Dell cozy series that I am reading. It was a good short romance.

I am currently reading The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis. This is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. Somehow I missed this series when I was growing up (don't ask me how). I bought The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for 25 cents at the library and thought that it was the first book in the series. Surprise!!! Not the case. I am down to the last 10 pages (I just could not keep my eyes open any longer at 3:30 a.m. or so this morning). Anyway, when I finish those last 10 I have The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe all ready to start.

message 2747: by Jennifer (last edited Oct 14, 2012 05:45PM) (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished a couple this week: closing in on the end of a few others.

Finished The Caine Mutiny The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk on audio-- the narrator made Queeg sound a little like Humphrey Bogart, which was kinda cool. The book was probably a little longer than it needed to be but Wouk handled Queeg subtly -- which he needed to-- so overall an effective story.

Finished The Sister Queens The Sister Queens by Sophie Perinot which was 500 pages long but ended only about halfway through the sisters' lives and I'd have been just as happy if it had gone farther!

Started The Forsyte Saga: Swan Song The Forsyte Saga Swan Song by John Galsworthy on audio and am more than halfway through. This is book 6 of 9 in this series, probably my all-time favorite series.

Partway through Kitty Foyle Kitty Foyle by Christopher Morley and The Paris Wife The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and just started Summer at Tiffany Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart .

Bought a couple yesterday that look interesting: The Age of Desire The Age of Desire by Jennie Fields which is a historical novel about Edith Wharton, and The Shadow Queen: A Novel of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor The Shadow Queen A Novel of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor by Rebecca Dean .

The World We Found by Thrity Umrigar (contemporary India)
In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant (early 1500s Venice)
A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick (rural Wisconsin, 1909)

I'm now reading a fascinating memoir,
Life on the Color Line: The True Story of a White Boy Who Discovered He Was Black
