I've requested this at the library and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I'm reading Side Jobs Stories From the Dresden Files (The Dresden Files anthology #1) by Jim Butcher Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files mainly because I could get the ebook from my library and I'm trying to use my reader more. I'm almost done and I LOVED the story about Michael Carpenter. So good.

That's the one! I thought it was just terrible. The one before it wasn't that great either, but UNDEAD & UNFINISHED totally did me in for the series. Below is what I put in my review here on GR after I read it:

Read from July 13 to 18, 2010
format Hardcover (edit)
review How far the mighty have fallen! This series used to be a favorite of mine. Loved the humor. Now it just seems forced (making it NOT funny!) and the stories, what there is of them, seem cobbled together from nothing just for a buck. I'm done with this series after this one, even if it's not the last one which it could be due to the AWFUL epilogue. Betsy & Laura go to hell (sounds like a really crappy direct to DVD movie title, doesn't it?) so Laura can see what "Mom's" home is like and then end up doing some time travelling. Dumb idea, dumber story with a completely unforeseen ending.(less)

I have this and have read all the stories and the novella previously in other books, except for the one that was written just for this collection. Need to dig it out and read that story.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Closing in on the end of both The Reversal The Reversal (Mickey Haller, #3) by Michael Connelly and Jolie Blon's Bounce Jolie Blon's Bounce (Dave Robicheaux, #12) by James Lee Burke and enjoying both. Two of my favorite mystery authors. Next up will be Crocodile on the Sandbank Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody #1) by Elizabeth Peters .

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments I've been in a cozy slump for a while now, so I just started When the Earth Moves Rogue Earthquakes, Tremors, and Aftershocks by Patricia Barnes-Svarney after finishing The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman .

message 2358: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I've been in a cozy slump too, I don't understand it and I don't like it. But meanwhile I'm reading the gigantic tome, The Instructions by Adam Levin by Adam Levin which I love so far (good thing, since it's over 1,000 pages) and Helsinki White by James Thompson by James Thompson (a mystery but more thriller; definitely not cozy).

Karen M | 1436 comments I'm reading mostly mysteries lately but not all cozies:

Shakedown by Joel Goldman which is a fast moving thriller, started last night & up to page 97. Also randomly chose Stuff to Die For by Don Bruns who is a first time author for me, we'll see how it goes.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) 'Nother one down-- 29 to go in this batch! Finished Jolie Blon's Bounce Jolie Blon's Bounce (Dave Robicheaux, #12) by James Lee Burke last night. James Lee Burke is one of my 4 or 5 favorite mystery authors and he does two things extraordinarily well-- first, he mixes description in with narrative so well that you don't realize a picture is being painted. You wind up with a story set in a place that arose fully formed in your mind as the story unfolded. The second thing is dialogue. His dialogue reveals his characters even as it communicates and pushes the story forward.

And I'm sorry, I just love Clete Purcel. I realize he is intensely flawed and there is almost nothing about him that withstands scrutiny-- but, dude.

message 2365: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Love James Lee Burke and Clete! Poor Clete always falls for the wrong women.

message 2366: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I hadn't read anything by Burke in some time until I won a copy of Feast Day Of Fools (Hackberry Holland, #3) by James Lee Burke here on GR last year. Had never read the Hackberry Holland series, but really enjoyed the book. Some really evil characters that jumped right off the pages!

message 2367: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 92 comments I just started Perigee by Patrick Chiles but not far enough in to have an opinion yet. Sci-fi in the 'near future'.

I tend to wander through mystery (both cozy and hard core), Adventure, Sci-fi and Fantasy with a very occasional romance tossed in.

I am about 100 pages into The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly. This is my first book by him, and so far it is pretty good. Though I have not seen the movie, just knowing Matthew McConaughey plays the lead character has me hearing his voice in the book--not necessarily a bad thing. *g*

message 2372: by Linda (new)

Linda Klinedinst (linda_klinedinst) | 113 comments I quit reading "Blood In The Water" by Jane Haddam for right now. Its too slow of a book for me.

I am reading "No Cooperation from the Cat" by Marian Babson. Now I like this book. It is really good. It is a Mystery. My Library just got this book on March 16th, of this year. It is a new book. I got this book from my Library.

I'm another fan, probably in part because I've made some of Eve's rants about social events and people myself.

message 2379: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) | 63 comments Deb: Yes, Roarke is certainly interesting!
Sharon: This is my first J D Robb " In Death" book. But, I do have a feel for the character and I can be that way too. I will admit that after reading Nora Roberts novels this one was a shocker. I knew it was supposed to be edgy, but this was a complete 180. I love it though and can't wait to read the next one!

Sharon Michael | 92 comments Julie wrote: "I will admit that after reading Nora Roberts novels this one was a shocker. I knew it was supposed to be edgy, but this was a complete 180"

I did it the other way around, started with the "In Death" series since I'm primarily a mystery/fantasy and sci-fi reader. Started reading some of the Nora Roberts books only after that.

I have liked some of the books she has written as Nora Roberts ... several that have had links to police officers and some of the ones leaning toward the paranormal. Some are very good but I've found I do have to be pretty selective.

message 2381: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) | 63 comments I'm with you on the mystery and paranormal. I like those the best. I'm not opposed to trying out the others just to see if I like them or not. You never know. But, I can be selective also. I know what you mean.

message 2382: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 92 comments Julie wrote: "I'm not opposed to trying out the others just to see if I like them or not. You never know. "

I do this as well, but since I don't continue with a book that I'm not really enjoying, I don't waste much time with them. Lots of times just skimming through a few pages will tell me if I'm apt to enjoy it or not.

message 2383: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments I'm still reading Stuff to Die For which has turned out to be a solid 3 star. Worth finishing. I'm also reading an oldie The Moneychangers which is more terrifying than it was meant to be. Fictional dire predictions of banks and the economy failing, sound familar? Book was published in 1975, get out your crystal ball.

I've been making my way through these for the past couple of years. I think I'm up to #25. You really need to space them out some or they all run together. For me, Roarke is always the best part of the books.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished the audiobook version of Blameless (Parasol Protectorate, #3) by Gail Carriger . Probably my least favourite of the series so far, but still great to listen to (although the audio values weren't as high as they were on the first two).
