I've only had time to read about 40 pages in A Discovery of Witches and so far I like it. I haven't been able to start The Peach Keeper yet.

I just started this one, too. Wow, it's long. I'm not very far in, but it's amazing. When I stop reading, I feel like I'm jarred out of the (book's) reality- it really does feel like you could live inside the pages of this book. It's so vivid that the "real" world doesn't feel as real as Murakami's world.

I'm in the minority here in that I really enjoyed Discovery of Witches. :)

M. (saylor) | 3 comments I generally find myself reading "found" books - biographies or memoirs that are out of print or good "travel" books. I find that a good travel writer really knows how to make discoveries about a place make me feel like I want to go out and have adventures too.

I think there were a lot of people who really liked it Jennifer. I am not a huge paranormal fan in the first place and when you add the whole love at first sight kind of thing I shut down. I am pretty picky!

Ariel (sevenmoonlight) | 138 comments I finished Troubled Bones A Medieval Noir by Jeri Westerson Troubled Bones which was quite good. I have started India Black and the Widow of Windsor (Madam of Espionage, #2) by Carol K. Carr India Black and the Widow of Windsor (a Madam of Espionage Mystery). So far I find it unique in concept.

message 2010: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 137 comments I just finished India Black and the Widow of Windsor (Madam of Espionage, #2) by Carol K. Carr . I'm not sure whether it would be considered a cozy or not. It does have many of the characteristics of cozies: protagonist is not a professional crime fighter/solver; there isn't much gore; there's no actual sex. There is, however, some language that very straight-laced people might find objectionable, and the protagonist is the madam of a house of ill-repute. This is the second book in the series, and both of them were very good, and, even better, hilarious.

message 2011: by Linda (new)

Linda I'm reading Hell to Pay (Live to Tell #3) by Wendy Corsi Staub , and it's terrific. Extremely suspenseful, deliciously creepy. Wendy Corsi Staub is a favorite of mine, and she never disappoints.

message 2013: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) Reading Everything's Eventual 14 Dark Tales by Stephen King , pretty intense read!

message 2014: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Started The Night Strangers The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian yesterday but am not sure I'll finish it. Too much like Stephen King, I think. I live in a house we built in Vt and am familiar with the whole area in the book--not sure I'll ever go in the cellar again alone or into a herbalists garden and I'm not even that far into the book.....Really excellent writing just too much horror for me.

message 2015: by Beth (new)

Katherine, I read this book last month. It was a bit disturbing so I think you are correct in the Stephen King bit. As with all Chris Bohjalian's book there was a definite twist at the end. I don't think I will forget this book anytime soon.

Debra Goldstein (debrahgoldstein) | 19 comments When I'm not reading a mystery, I read a mix of memoir, biography, and general fiction. Last week, on a flight home from Santa Fe, I read Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver. Not only was it an excellent book in terms of its flow, it brought to life some of the images I had just seen in New Mexico. I recommend all of Kingsolver's works -

I agree, Debra. Kingsolver is one of my new favorites. I loved "High Tide in Tucson" which, as you say "brought to life" images of Arizona for me.
I also recommend "Small Wonder" a collection of her essays. I also have a couple of her others on my "read ASAP shelf.

I will need to get High Tide in Tucson as I'm not familiar with that one. I recently read The Lacuna and while it was slow getting into, it was well worth it.

Butterflycager When I'm not reading a cozy mystery, I'm usually reading historical fiction, retold fairy tales, or urban fantasy. I'm currently reading The Watchtower by Lee Carroll.

I liked Anita Blake up through book #9. Actually continued reading through book #13, but they were awful after #9. I love good erotica, but really hate bad porn that reads like Penthouse Forum!!

Thanks Melodie,
I don't do erotica really, at least book 1 of Anita Blake didn't have any. It is hard to find Urban Fantasy that isn't heavily "sexy". Perhaps that is why Dresden Files is more my style. So far the Kate Daniels books are more like Dresden.

message 2039: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Left The Night Strangers for awhile The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian and am reading A Bitter Truth A Bitter Truth A Bess Crawford Mystery by Charles Todd which is easy enough reading but has, what I consider, a very improbable premise. I keep saying to myself, this is ludicrous. Also reading Fragile Fragile A Novel by Lisa Unger which is very slow getting to the point. Will probably finish one or the other today.

You don't have to worry about the sex in the Anita books until the "triumvirate" thing starts with her, Jean-Claude and her boyfriend, the werewolf whose name I can't recall at the moment. Then what Hamilton calls "the Ardeur" kicks in and the books just go to hell after that. I don't mind sex. I DO mind crappy writing and sex just for the sake of something to fill the pages!
