When you're not reading a cozy....
Just started reading Dark Passages. This is a cross between Dark Shadows and a bit of Playboy Bunny thrown in. The author played Josette (and other characters) on Dark Shadows and was one of the bunnies when they opened the NY Club.

Finished Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography
which I picked up on a whim and really enjoyed. Also American Assassin
which turned out to be much better than I expected. Not sure why I didn't expect to like it-- I'm enjoying the series. I guess because it's a look back at the character's beginnings and I wasn't really in the mood to see this character at an undeveloped phase of his life. But no matter: my fears were unfounded.

So far it's funny and I'm enjoying it.
I got
from the library earlier this week and I really hesitated in starting it, I'm not sure why. I started last night and couldn't put it down. I'm pretty sure I've figured out Flinn's story, but I could be wrong.

Almost done with
and really liking it! Also reading
, which I won here on Goodreads, and
. Seems like I've been waiting forever for this Harry Dresden book!
Heidi, I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone. And I'm afraid that I'm going to end up not liking it by the end of it.

I love the Twilight movies, but I can SO do without him.....he's a crappy actor!

because I have a yellow lab and let's just say that he and Marley are kindred spirits :D"yeah I needed to read this. It makes me happy and sad. We just lost our Riley who was such "Marley" I really am missing him so I figured I finally needed to read this. It's just the therapy I needed I laughed I cried. I think my dh is finally ready to try and consider getting a new dog.
- started out with promise, but by the end, I realized that I knew nothing about either the prison OR the real world which was a huge disappointment. Both needed description and explanation that were completely ignored. It's like all of the action happened on a green (or black) screen. On to
Right now, my non-cozy of choice is
. This is the latest in a series of excellent historical mysteries.

I'm now about halfway through Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card for a Challenge in another group and am just starting To Kill a Mockingbird. I read TKaM years ago, but now I'm reading it because I'll be interning in an 11th grade American Lit class. This is one of the books they'll be reading. The rest of the month I'll be catching up on the rest of the books (material) they're reading this year, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Color Purple, Into Thin Air, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and a couple of other books.
Catherine - TKAM is my absolute FAVORITE book/movie of all time! I even made a "HAM" costume one year from chicken wire and felt - wore it to an event downtown in DC and boy did I get a lot of comments! It was sad, however - some folks had never even heard of this book, which I consider one of the classics. : 0
I just started Before I Go to Sleepby S.J. Watson. My mother in law recommended it and I haven't been able to put it down.
I'm reading The Seduction and Other Stories basically so I don't reach for another thriller. LOL I also started Shadow Song which is a FirstReads win and another book that I'm loving.
Karen M wrote: "I'm reading The Seduction and Other Stories basically so I don't reach for another thriller. LOL I also started Shadow Song which is a FirstReads win and another book..."Karen, how did you like DARK PASSAGES?

I'm not surprised, though, that some people have never heard of the book. I think some just sleep through the classes and pretend to read the books. It's a shame, because they're missing some really good books, not just TKaM, but other great reads. But some folks just don't read books :( :(. I don't understand that!! I can't imagine life without books.
Been kinda absent lately-- dad just got put in hospice care and we just moved so things have been a little crazy. In the middle of it I found myself reading ten books simultaneously and not making a heck of a lot of progress on any of them. Finally finishing and/or making headway: Divine Inspiration
Strapless
Waste
Separation Of Power
American Assassin
The Aloha Quilt
Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography
Granville Barker Plays: One
The Scarlet Contessa: A Novel of the Italian Renaissance
Best American Plays Supplementary Volume 1918-1958

The only book I read in high school was THE HAPPY HOOKER. The books I was supposed to read for English....I'd scan the Cliff Notes maybe, but mostly I just paid attention when they talked about the book before the test and I always got A's. During that time period I was more interested in all the trouble I could get into, and all the guys I could go out with. I didn't get back into reading until we came to Colorado in 1978 and I read a review of 2 books in the Sunday paper. One was THE THORN BIRDS and the other was called THE PROUD BREED. I went looking for both the next week and haven't stopped since!
Melodie wrote: "Karen M wrote: "I'm reading The Seduction and Other Stories basically so I don't reach for another thriller. It was kind of on the sweet side as 0pposed to being darker but it followed the Dark Shadows storyline in the soap opera within the story so that was nice. Brought back memories of hurrying home from school to watch Dark Shadows.
Still reading Dracula and working through the anthology Death's Excellent Vacation. Am past the midpoint of Dracula and like it, but just feels like I haven't had as much time to read this past week.

Guess that was a little over the top, huh?
I think I burned myself out on cozies, so I've switched over to trying to finish
- which is fascinating and well written, but one you can't read too fast if you want to retain any information. I've also just finished
. Geez this was a good book! I always learn something new when reading Bill Bryson.

Stephanie Grace Whitson is a really good writer. i have read most of her books. really, really good.
I finished Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her. It tells the story of the group of writers who created Nancy Drew along with many other series. In addition, it ties Nancy Drew's history with the history of women in the US from the 1930s to the 80s. The book drags a bit in the beginning, but I'm glad I stuck with it and came to know the women behind the series that so many of us read as children.
Susan: I've been wanting to Girl Sleuth for a few years now. I came across a copy at the last library used book sale, but it looked like someone had spilled coffee on it, so passed it up. Even though it was only a couple bucks, I'd prefer a book where the pages weren't molding or sticking together. :-\
Just started Jeffrey Archer's Only Time Will Tell. I love it when I start a book and it has me at the first chapter.
I just finished
Death Cloud about a teenage Sherlock Holmes. It has been marketed as a YA mystery - but I absolutely loved it! It was highly enjoyable so don't let the YA label keep you from reading it.

I see some posts from awhile back regarding the Mitford Series. For more updated info, is anyone familiar with this series? What did you think???
When not reading cozies I .... read science fiction, cookbooks, history, and spiritual (mostly buddhist or pagan). I watch/listen to old movies and british mysteries on Netflix while knitting, cross stitching, or working with papier-mâché

Pamela wrote: "I see some posts from awhile back regarding the Mitford Series. For more updated info, is anyone familiar with this series? What did you think???"This series is my all-time favorite!!
The cast of characters is somewhat quirky, but very endearing. These books really "draw me in" and I don't want them to end... I wish Mitford was a real place that I could visit, and I would love to meet the people who live there.
I grew up in a small town, so the small-town-ness of Mitford and the closeness of the people who live there is nice. The main character, Episcopalian bachelor priest Father Tim's adventures caring for his parishioners, and the things that happen to him along the way (dating his neighbor, being adopted by a huge dog, and taking in a 12-yr old boy, to name a few) are laugh-out-loud funny!!
I read
on the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it and was up until 3am Saturday morning because I just didn't want to put it down. Next up on my YA tour is
which I've just started and it's already had me laughing out loud in places.

Heidi, I've been reading a few reviews of divergent and it seems that I interpreted things differently than those who gave low ratings. I really enjoyed the story but I can see where there are holes in it.

Heather,
I have read this so many times I have lost count (this might have been the eighth or nineth reading), and I still love it. I still get those "ah ha!" moments when I make a connection to something in another book in the series, or come across something that I had forgotten about. Plus, my subconscious is constantly making comparisons to what happened in the movies as opposed to the book.
