Heather,

I have read this so many times I have lost count (this might have been the eighth or nineth reading), and I still love it. I still get those "ah ha!" moments when I make a connection to something in another book in the series, or come across something that I had forgotten about. Plus, my subconscious is constantly making comparisons to what happened in the movies as opposed to the book.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography Stories I Only Tell My Friends An Autobiography by Rob Lowe which I picked up on a whim and really enjoyed. Also American Assassin American Assassin (Mitch Rapp #11) by Vince Flynn which turned out to be much better than I expected. Not sure why I didn't expect to like it-- I'm enjoying the series. I guess because it's a look back at the character's beginnings and I wasn't really in the mood to see this character at an undeveloped phase of his life. But no matter: my fears were unfounded.

Don't feel bad, maybe it was a jinx. I haven't won anything from FirstReads in 2-1/2 weeks and this was, I think, my last win. So far it's funny and I'm enjoying it.

I haven't even thought about this book since I read that it's already optioned for a movie and it's supposed to star Taylor Lautner. I love the Twilight movies, but I can SO do without him.....he's a crappy actor!

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments Incarceron (Incarceron, #1) by Catherine Fisher - started out with promise, but by the end, I realized that I knew nothing about either the prison OR the real world which was a huge disappointment. Both needed description and explanation that were completely ignored. It's like all of the action happened on a green (or black) screen.

On to The Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3 ) by Rick Riordan

Catherine (catjackson) I'm now about halfway through Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card for a Challenge in another group and am just starting To Kill a Mockingbird. I read TKaM years ago, but now I'm reading it because I'll be interning in an 11th grade American Lit class. This is one of the books they'll be reading. The rest of the month I'll be catching up on the rest of the books (material) they're reading this year, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Color Purple, Into Thin Air, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and a couple of other books.

Caroline | 661 comments Catherine - TKAM is my absolute FAVORITE book/movie of all time! I even made a "HAM" costume one year from chicken wire and felt - wore it to an event downtown in DC and boy did I get a lot of comments! It was sad, however - some folks had never even heard of this book, which I consider one of the classics. : 0

Caroline, what a great imagination!! I'm not surprised, though, that some people have never heard of the book. I think some just sleep through the classes and pretend to read the books. It's a shame, because they're missing some really good books, not just TKaM, but other great reads. But some folks just don't read books :( :(. I don't understand that!! I can't imagine life without books.

I was a reader when I was in grade school, but when I got to high school I stopped reading. The only book I read in high school was THE HAPPY HOOKER. The books I was supposed to read for English....I'd scan the Cliff Notes maybe, but mostly I just paid attention when they talked about the book before the test and I always got A's. During that time period I was more interested in all the trouble I could get into, and all the guys I could go out with. I didn't get back into reading until we came to Colorado in 1978 and I read a review of 2 books in the Sunday paper. One was THE THORN BIRDS and the other was called THE PROUD BREED. I went looking for both the next week and haven't stopped since!

It was kind of a lite read. It was good but not what I expected. It was kind of on the sweet side as 0pposed to being darker but it followed the Dark Shadows storyline in the soap opera within the story so that was nice. Brought back memories of hurrying home from school to watch Dark Shadows.

I once owned a combination antique store/tea room, and I named it The Mockingbird because of TKAM. Guess that was a little over the top, huh?

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I think I burned myself out on cozies, so I've switched over to trying to finish The Disappearing Spoon And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sam Kean - which is fascinating and well written, but one you can't read too fast if you want to retain any information. I've also just finished A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson . Geez this was a good book! I always learn something new when reading Bill Bryson.

message 1786: by Susan (new)

Susan I finished Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her. It tells the story of the group of writers who created Nancy Drew along with many other series. In addition, it ties Nancy Drew's history with the history of women in the US from the 1930s to the 80s. The book drags a bit in the beginning, but I'm glad I stuck with it and came to know the women behind the series that so many of us read as children.

Susan: I've been wanting to Girl Sleuth for a few years now. I came across a copy at the last library used book sale, but it looked like someone had spilled coffee on it, so passed it up. Even though it was only a couple bucks, I'd prefer a book where the pages weren't molding or sticking together. :-\

This series is my all-time favorite!!

The cast of characters is somewhat quirky, but very endearing. These books really "draw me in" and I don't want them to end... I wish Mitford was a real place that I could visit, and I would love to meet the people who live there.

I grew up in a small town, so the small-town-ness of Mitford and the closeness of the people who live there is nice. The main character, Episcopalian bachelor priest Father Tim's adventures caring for his parishioners, and the things that happen to him along the way (dating his neighbor, being adopted by a huge dog, and taking in a 12-yr old boy, to name a few) are laugh-out-loud funny!!
