Robin: Well, I've stuck with it, mostly because I really want to know what happened in the first case, and how (if!) it is connected to the second case. Did not get any reading done Saturday as I was out all day, but did make progress yesterday. Only 100 pages from the end!

Well, I finished In the Woods last night. The book starts out slow, but by page 100 I was drawn in, wanting to know how/if the two cases were related, and how/if they would be resolved. Below is what I posted in the mystery/thriller group discussion on the book.

(view spoiler)

Feeling in the mood for something steamy and quick after this, so have picked up the new romance by Vicki Lewis Thompson, [book:Should've Been a Cowboy|10059880]. So far, so good!

I'm reading Magic Slays and enjoying it thoroughly. I'm going to read the story in Hexed after this.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Currently reading The Undead Kama Sutra (Felix Gomez, #3) by Mario Acevedo and Misery Bay (Alex McKnight Mystery #8) by Steve Hamilton . MISERY BAY has started out great! Has been several years since the last Alex McKnight book, so was really looking forward to this one!

I was curious too about the related cases, but not enough to keep reading. From your review, it sounds like maybe you could have gone either way.

Can't wait to read Magic Slays.

message 1609: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cwsmith) Non-fiction, absolutely. Love history (currently into Civil War) and science/medicine (. Mysteries are my "relaxing" reads ... so definitely prefer true cozies to the thriller genre.

message 1610: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cwsmith) OK ... too much wine! Emperor of All Maladies ... sorry for the HTML snafu.

ROFL at Cindy. *grin*

Robin: From the discussion in the other group, it seems peoples' opinions on In the Woods are fairly split. A lot of people loved it, while others of us liked it up until the end. Don't know if I will read anything else by her.

message 1612: by Kaye (new)

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Currently reading Ten Beach Road by Wendy Wax and it's excellent.

message 1613: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Still and maybe forever reading The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

But I'd probably make more progress if I wasn't always stopping to squeeze in another cozy!

message 1614: by Donna (new)

Donna | 27 comments I finished Good Enough to Eat by Stacey Ballis today. It was quite different from what I usually read, but I liked it. Lots of food talk amongst the angst and drama, and yummy-sounding recipes at the end of the book.

message 1615: by adlin (last edited Jun 10, 2011 06:47AM) (new)

adlin | 101 comments Reading Savannah Breeze by Mary Kay Andrews and am thus far enjoying this sequel of sorts to Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews

I started Tales from the Triple Crown by Steve Haskin last night. I'm really enjoying it...Great human interest & behind the scenes stories from past Triple Crown races.

Finished Should've Been a Cowboy by Vicki Lewis Thompson Friday night and loved it. Now reading The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader" by C.S. Lewis and almost done with it. I could swear I read this one back in fifth grade, but nothing past the first chapter has been familiar. Hmm...

message 1618: by Robin (new)

Robin Allen I just started What's So Funny? by Donald E. Westlake , one of Westlake's Dortmunder capers.

message 1619: by Jean (last edited Jun 14, 2011 08:21AM) (new)

Jean I found that I love Louise Erdrich's books. I just started The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich . She writes fiction about the Ojibwa Indians.

I love the Dortmunder series. Westlake did a wonderful job with those books.

I agree, Marja! He's one of my influences and I hope to write a caper novel soon.

Marja McGraw (marja1) | 994 comments LOL Good for you. Dormunder makes me smile. When you get your caper book published, please let me know.

Robin Allen Marja wrote: "LOL Good for you. Dormunder makes me smile. When you get your caper book published, please let me know."

Will do! I'm working on the third book in my clean, humorous Popppy Markham: Culinary Cop mystery series, then I'll start my caper. I have a really great idea and hope I can do it justice.

message 1624: by Marja (new)

Marja McGraw (marja1) | 994 comments You'll do fine. Half the battle is just the desire to do it justice because that will make you think things through before committing them to paper (or computer). A culinary cop series sounds intriguing, too. Do you have a website?

message 1625: by Robin (new)

Robin Allen Thanks, Marja. A caper novel will be a departure from my usual cozy mystery experience, but I think it'll be fun.

If You Can't Stand the Heat (Poppy Markham Culinary Cop) by Robin Allen

message 1626: by Marja (new)

Marja McGraw (marja1) | 994 comments In a way, I think a caper story is a cozy simply because they're so often fun. Good luck with it!

message 1627: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments The Bronze Horseman (Tatiana and Alexander, #1) by Paullina Simons by Paullina Simons. I don't normally like books with this level of "romance" in them, but I guess this book is one of the exceptions.

message 1628: by Robin (new)

Robin Allen Yes, I love the anything-goes nature of capers, all the highs and lows, all the reversals of fortune. This Dortmunder one I'm reading now keeps going off in all kinds of directions.

message 1629: by Erin L (new)

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I'm reading The Bang-Bang Club, movie tie-in Snapshots From a Hidden War by Greg Marinovich right now. It's about a group of photographers at the end of apartheid in S. Africa. It's some tough reading, but it's very well written.

message 1630: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I have started The House on Olive Street by Robyn Carr and am really loving it. A nice cozy chic lit book. I enjoy all the characters and needed something light and fast paced after the thriller i just read.

message 1631: by Robin (new)

Robin Allen I'm reading another Dortmunder book, Drowned Hopes. A former cellmate wants Dortmunder to help him retrieve $700K buried in a coffin at the bottom of a reservoir.

I love that series. I don't have time to re-read all of them before the movie comes out, but maybe I'll start afterwards.

I just finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I re-read the first five and now I still have the last one. I'm almost reluctant to start it. Guess I just hate to see the end of a series.

I've spent most of the weekend on HP/Phoenix, a first read for me. 500 pages down, 370 more to go. Man, this is a long book! I'm glad book six is shorter. Don't know if I'll be able to finish it today, but am sure going to try! Er, if I ever get offline, that is. ;)

message 1637: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (sevenmoonlight) | 138 comments I just finished Secret of the White Rose by Stefanie Pintoff Secret of the White Rose. It is a historical police procedural. I thought it was quite good.

message 1638: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Started Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver over the weekend. So far, so good.

message 1639: by Marja (new)

Marja McGraw (marja1) | 994 comments I just finished Murder on the Interstate by Jean Henry Mead. I don't know that you'd call it a cozy, but there was lots of action and it was very entertaining.

I also recently read Frank, Incense and Muriel by Anne K. Albert. Pretty funny stuff, and I really enjoyed it.

message 1640: by Donna (new)

Donna | 27 comments I'm almost finished reading Just Jane by Nancy Moser by Nancy Moser. It's good, but I think I liked The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen by Syrie James , which I also read recently, better.

I haven't gotten very far yet since Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich showed up on Monday and I read it instead. What I've read so far is pretty good!

Caroline | 661 comments I'm really enjoying Fabergé's Eggs The Extraordinary Story of the Masterpieces That Outlived an Empire by Toby Faber (book I bought at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts gift shop). I had a double major Russian language and political science with a minor in Soviet Studies (keep in mind, this was back in the 70's) and I've always been interested in these. The book describes the work of the jeweler and his workshop as well as some of the Russian history along the way. Even has a list (at the end) of all the eggs, when they were made/presented and current whereabouts. Fascinating but sad that a couple of them are "whereabouts unknown." VMFA is doing a special exhibit 2 July through Oct this year "Faberge Revealed" and will have lots of stuff on show so I can't wait to go back. : )

Beth | 616 comments I'm almost done with Those Who Save Us Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum , which I'm reading for my book club discussion group. It's a very powerful book, though rough in spots, as wartime can be. It's two interwoven stories of a German mother during WWII and her daughter in the 1990s. The author interviewed Holocaust survivors for Steven Spielberg's movie, Schindler's List, so she knows the subject well. I highly recommend the book.

Started Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince yesterday afternoon and nearly got to the halfway point last night. Don't think I will get nearly as much read today, as I am going on a guided Arboretum walk for a couple hours this afternoon, and there's an Hercule Poirot mystery on PBS tonight.

Wow! You do way more than I do. Usually I'm doing 3 at a time; usually an actual book, an ebook, and an audiobook. Way to go you though!
