How far in advance to send a press release

Hi,

My co-author and I are in the process of having a marketing company send out a press release for our new book, which comes out on September 25th. When should the press release go out? 3 days in advance? A week in advance? Something else? We were thinking right after Labor Day, but that's 2 weeks in advance. Should we wait another week or more? Please help. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I worked in the ad business for years. If this is your debut book, 2 weeks in advance is to long. People will forget unless you already have a large audience from other book releases. If the book is on pre-order now, do it now. If it's a debut novel without a large audience, wait until after the book releases so you can include some quotes from reviews and help drive more sales after the initial purchases.

I tried and failed horribly at ad placement when I released my first book in 2015. Thanks for clarifying the correct way to do this because I've got a pre-order coming up in a couple of months and I was thinking of running a press-release. Thanks!
