Read in about 2015-2016. I think it was a recent book and it was part of an at the time incomplete series.
The point of view splits between a teen boy and girl. At the beginning the girl is separated from her brother and is taken prisoner at some sore of military like camp/school where she works as a slave for the evil female leader of the school. I don't remember much about the boys POV but he is a student who is more advanced than the others. I think he might be the evil commander ladies son? Somehow the boy and girl are drawn and connected to each other.
I remember that the evil lady carved something onto the lead girl's skin for disobeying. Also, I don't remember if this was book one or two or two but eventually the boy and girl go on a search for the girls brother and he's in a prison so the guy tries to get him out. He ends up getting caught and his hand is decapitated, but the girl gets him out by starting a fire. All the while there is some big revolution happening.
Okay..that's all I can really recall, any help would be greatly appreciated because I don't think I ever finished this series. Thanks!
