Chapter 2 (view spoiler)[ Oh my, I put off reading this book because I knew it would be a tough read and I’m already crying. What a tragedy the way Khalil is shot by the police officer. Hearing Starr say her father gave her the talk at 12 about what to do if a cop stops you. That’s not a talk I’ve ever thought about having with my kids. Also i feel so bad for Khalil and understand his financial situation with his grandmother sick. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 6 (view spoiler)[I feel just as frustrated as Starr and her mom with the line of questioning the cops are doing all about Khalil. Really what Khalil did is move when the cop told him not to. He had already been patted down and the cop didn’t find anything. I would never want to be a police officer. All they see and deal with, they have a different perspective then we could ever have, but he didn’t raise his gun and warn Khalil stop or I’ll shoot, he just shot him and not once but 3 times. It’s so wrong and so is the line of questioning. I can’t imagine that being my son. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 8 (view spoiler)[ Oh my I’m bitting my nails reading this book. I’m so nervous for Starr and all the attention Khalil death is getting. All of their protesting, news coverage and activists starting right at his funeral. I’m afraid of what this is going to turn into for her. Also, her losing both best friends Natasha at 10 and now Khalil, I cant even imagine hardships like that being a part of my kids lives. (hide spoiler)]

Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner and I forgot to comeback and post I finished! I stopped commenting on the book because I couldn't put it down and just had to finish reading it.

I bought this book last year too and put off reading it thinking it would tear me apart. It's not an easy read and it shouldn't be. I cried throughout, I also laughed, loved and learned. It's incredible read, the family aspect is amazing. Definitely one of my favorite YA reads. I highly recommend it and your heart will definitely survive. I can't wait to see the movie this weekend, though I can't imagine the movie being able to hold a candle to the book.
