ABANDONED. best fantasy of year or similar anthology

Fantasy, historical, one of a number collected in a paperback. Read in the 80's or 90's. I thought the title of the short story was 'a jar of polish.' Viking period. In a castle there is a pre marriage feast. The groom looks into his cup and sees a death sign. He has to drink but then goes to a utility room to vomit the poison. While he is unconscious the castle is invaded by more Vikings. The castle is looted and guests killed. The groom's dying father tells him to find his uncle in the castle basement, who turns out to be a demon sent by the groom's grandfather, who is a wizard. The demon can't leave the basement but will take care of any reavers that come down to him. The groom goes upstairs, sees his brother on the rack and his intended serving drinks and offers to help the reavers find what they are looking for-a jar of polish.
