ABANDONED. pretty old, ending is where the main character escapes a jail with the help of someone else

Read this book around five years ago? The setting was quite old, like in the 1980s or 90s. The main protagonist somehow gets captured into jail but in the end escapes with the help of other characters. The main protagonist then returns back to the place years later at the end of the book.
