Sarah Cryderman | 9 comments Read this in elementary school (early 90’s) and seemed from the 80’s or 70’s. Wasn’t very big, maybe 500 pages. I thought it was “Goldwin and the goblins” but that doesn’t seem to be right.

Sarah, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

message 4: by Sarah (new) - added it

Sarah Cryderman | 9 comments I haven’t found it yet! I remember it being called Goldwyn and the Goblins but never find anything like that….

Sarah, are they definitely goblins - or possibly gnomes, gremlins, brownies, dwarfs, imps, etc.?

Can you describe their homes (e.g., underground tunnels in forest)?

Do you recall the cover image?

message 6: by Sarah (new) - added it

Sarah Cryderman | 9 comments The cover image had a rear view of a girl walking through a break in heavy brush with goblins on either side of her. That’s all I remember, I was probably 8-10 when I read it (25+ years ago).

Capn | 3506 comments Are you Canadian? Could it be "The Secret World of Og"? Pierre Berton

Capn | 3506 comments (Cover shown on Goodreads is very dissimilar to the one I remember from school AND the copy I have now.)

Link for Capn's suggestion - The Secret World of Og by Pierre Berton. There are different cover images.

Sarah Cryderman | 9 comments I don’t think so. There was only one girl and she didn’t go through a trapdoor that I remember. I’m from the US.

Capn | 3506 comments There are several books in the "Pixie Tricks" series with sprites, goblins, dwarves, etc. https://www.goodreads.com/series/7104...

Doesn't sound exactly like your book, but they had lots of different covers.

JoLynn | 67 comments Sounds a bit like Mistress Mash Masham''s Repose by T.H. White.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Could they possibly have been "boggarts" instead of goblins?
What time period/location did the story take place?

message 15: by Capn (new) - added it

Capn | 3506 comments It looks like JoLynn and Rainbowheart have you covered, but it just occurred to me that there's an outside chance you're remembering The Princess and the Goblin. I don't think it is, since there are no property developers, but there's definitely a lot of (unfriendly) goblins underground and one girl. Outside chance, but worth a shot.

Sycorax | 88 comments It's a bit of a reach, but possibly The Gnome Mobile?

message 17: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28678 comments The Gnomobile for Syrorax's suggestion.

Sarah Cryderman | 9 comments All these are great suggestions! So far none have hit the mark though. It is entirely possible my adolescent brain made up the details and I am off base but it was such a clear memory!

Capn | 3506 comments We can do this!

Who was Goldwyn? Was the protagonist's last name Goldwyn / Goldwin?

(Could it have been Bronwyn or Bronwen? Or Golda or Goldie?)

Are you at least mostly sure that the creatures were called GOBLINS, or could they have had another title? (I think it was Kris's post that listed possible alternative names).

Can you remember any specific scene or conversation? Or any other detail? It can be obscure and disconnected - just gives an additional search term.

Do you remember how it ends? (Spoilers are fine to list if they help!).

Do you remember where it was set?

What colour were the (goblins)? Bald or hairy? Clothed or naked? Hats?

Could they speak English? How did the main character find them?

How does she save them, assuming it has a happy end? Are they almost dug out with a digger and saved at the last moment? Does anyone else become aware of their existence? Can only the Main Character see them?

What do they eat? Are they all one gender/genderless? Or do they have families? Pets? Other than humans, do they face predation by other creatures? (like cats, maybe)?

Whatever else you can remember, however vague or disjointed, might jog someone else's memory! :)

Capn | 3506 comments Sarah - did Ayshe find your book? :) Looks promising!!!

message 22: by Gillian (new)

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 241 comments Not very likely, but could it be The Goblin Wood or one of the sequels, by Hilari Bell? Main character is named Makenna, and she befriends a group of goblins, but there's no construction.

Please note that you can bump your own threads, but we ask you not to bump others' threads, because the group is so large.
