ABANDONED. Fiction, Title: "(name of plant) by the window"??? Plot: man lives above shoe repair shop and writes letters to someone

 I'm looking for a book but can not remember the title or author. I do remember the title being; "(the name/type of a plant,) in the window sill or by the window" not sure. The genre is fiction. The plot delt with a man that worked at a shoe repair shop I believe and or rented a small apartment/living space above the shop and wrote letters to someone. I know this is extremely vague but unfortunately its all I can remember.
