Harper Lee's book was published in 1960 and is set in the 1930s. So why in 2018 does it still hold value?

Sadly I believe this book still resonates with us today because not a lot has changed. Of course technology is leaps and bounds and the law has made great strides, but at the core, those people who choose to label and treat others with hate has taken only baby steps, and sometimes not even that. Is it then inherent in human nature to need to hate? I truly hope this is not the case and have seen those who live with love in their hearts for all, but the lack of progress in this area can make you wonder and be discouraged. What I think we gain from this wonderful story is the reminder that children are taught to hate and that we need to make sure we take a moment to check our own prejudices that have been placed upon us at various stages of our childhoods. We can all do better, and I hope this book remains in the public eye to help us remember just how evil it is to kill a mockingbird.
