“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Join us as we embark on this thrilling journey.

Sulaiman Taji (sulaimantaji) | 10 comments Hey you guys.
I just started reading Directorate S just day before.
But since I saw you people are going to read Dark Matter, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Got excited and already started reading.

This is going to be my first group read, so if someone could give me a quick guide, that would be great.

Niveditha Ravindra (nivedithar) | 155 comments Read this. Nowadays most of the group reads have already been polished off by me!

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments How did you like this book Niveditha?

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
Hi Sulaiman... ideally we should discuss in a structured manner .. but it doesn't happen here as we have different reading paces ..
What I do is... I keep commenting or asking questions whenever I find something interesting.
However if your question or comment has a spoiler in it you have to.use spoiler tag ...

For example..suppose you are in chapter 12

You have to put

Chapter 12 ..

I quite liked it! The concept is very different. At places it wasn't very logical but that was the nature of the story, I felt. Ending could have been stronger. Also not an overtly long book. I think I gave it 4 stars.

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Halfway through and loving it. The only book other than Kafka on The Shore that I don't want to put down even to sleep! What a mindfuck!

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
It had started great for me.. but halfway down I lost the hold.. and it was utterly confusing towards the end.
Phew...

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Oh! I don't know if I'll feel the same towards the end...lets see :) so far so good. Though some parts were a little confusing it's still holding my attention:)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
Hoping the best for you , Swathi..
But majority has given it 5 stars

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Thanks Smitha:) Yeah majority have given 5 stars. But you never know ;) The most hyped books don't work for us sometimes :P Hoping for the best yes! :)

Sulaiman Taji (sulaimantaji) | 10 comments So, I started the book 2-3 days back. I've been waiting to read it, just didn't get the push which seemingly this challenge did.

Anyways, just crossed the 50% mark. It's getting interesting. Up to 25-30% was a little predictable.

Let's see how it goes

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments Just started this one. Hopefully I'll finish it in time unless life and other distractions come in the way. Shall participate more actively in this discussion.

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments I just finished reading the book last night. And wow!! Loved it. Kept me on the edge. No dull moments. Except for one minor thing that I thought could have been somehow different, I felt it was a perfect sci fi thriller. Now I need something light to read😂 This one had messed with my head(in a good way)😂

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
He he .. Swathi .. now we belong in opposite teams - with respect to this book .😂

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Haha yes 😂😂

Khushbu Mathur | 18 comments Enjoying it way too much. This was my companion on my recent trip to Kerala.

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Wow😍 How far are you into the book? I was like what the hell is happening as I was reading it😂😂

message 26: by G (new) - rated it 5 stars

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments Okay. After a long time I have come across a book that I am finding hard to put down. I started earlier today, and between work and family commitments I have still managed to hit the sixty-fivish percent mark. While the concept I am familiar with, owing to a movie that I absolutely love, the storytelling has kept it interesting for me so far.
I am feeling bad for the me in an alternate universe who has decided to steer clear off this book.

What movie would that be?

Sulaiman Taji (sulaimantaji) | 10 comments I just finished this book in the morning.
I was thinking it would take me more time to finish it, but oh damn is it captivating!

swatreads (swathishetty) | 176 comments Yes it is absolutely captivating and very hard to put down. The pace is great and also the characters!

The name of the movie is 'Coherence'. Do watch it if the concept of multiverses fascinates you.

message 31: by G (new) - rated it 5 stars

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments I am nitpicking, but the opening dialogue of chapter ten just seems so incorrect

(Well not really spoilers but the following are lines from the book)

Amanda glances up from the notebook, asks, “You’re sure writing it down is the best way to go?” “When you write something, you focus your full attention on it. It’s almost impossible to write one thing while thinking about another. The act of putting it on paper keeps your thoughts and intentions aligned.”

So... who is the psychiatrist here and who the physicist?

Oh i've watched Coherence and i was so much intrigued after watching it that i watched it again :P
Anyway if this book is in any sense closer as you claim to Coherence then i am up for a biblio treat for sure!!

message 33: by G (new) - rated it 5 stars

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments Done and done. Outstanding work. Some of the things didn't go down well with me, but that's just the aspiring writer in me cavilling about, throwing his weight around.
Looking forward to the discussions.

Jaya | 9 comments Starting this book today (worried my little brain may or may not be able to comprehend) after reading the comments!! Excited!

Makrand | 1353 comments I'm at 35% wrt the Book today and it has been an absolutely freakin' crazy ride so far!
So engaging, thrilling and yet dreadful at the same time. Not one bloody clue.
Me thinks i'll have to finish it tonight itself!
Thank you whoever nominated this one!

All those who watched coherence may be they should try out
Triangle is better than coherence
or
Primer is at par with Coherence and both are brain storming movie

All tym my favorite is Predestination 😍

Haven't heard of Triangle.
Did not get Priner at all. Probably because I just watched it once.

Predestination is <3

message 39: by G (new) - rated it 5 stars

G (somegsfella) | 39 comments Triangle is good yes, but I like Coherence more. Maybe because Coherence hasn't been given that overtly gritty treatment that is commonplace in such stories. Predestination is good too, but slightly different where other movies deal with multiverses, Predestination is more about time travel and predestination paradox.

Jhankar | 209 comments Okay 2 chapters through and my guess/theory/gut feel is that the kidnapper guy was Jason from another dimension, wanting to swap lives? I maybe/probably am wildly wrong.

@Jhankar .. you may put any spoiler in spoiler tag
< spoiler > but without the space in between < spoiler and >
You will get further info if you click... Some HTML allowed tag at right hand upper corner of the comment box if in desktop site ( not with mobile app)

Jhankar | 209 comments Oh crap. Extremely sorry, Smitha. I didn't realise my wild theory was an actual spoiler. I could delete that comment if you want. Also, I was unfortunately using the mobile app.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
No probs... at 2 chapters it wouldn't be a great spoiler ...

In future you can use spoiler tag which can be done on app too ...
Like I said put spoiler in between 2 <> without gaps and write your text and when you want to end ... use spoiler >
Again without the gap

Jhankar | 209 comments Brilliant! Thanks. :)

Navraj | 15 comments A little too filmi for my tastes, then I read that the author is a screenwriter. This book would make a good time pass film. Did like the story, but the writing is average.

message 47: by Bicky (new)

Bicky | 8 comments Unfortunately, I was unable to finish the book as I don't like the theory underpinning the plot because logic has left even in a science fiction sense and anything goes. The only time I have seen this theme done brilliantly but in a very different way was in the novel Replay by Ken Grimwood. Whether you agree with me or not I strongly suggest that you read Replay even though it was first published as far back as 1987.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
Bicky and Navraj - finally someone who didn't find rhe book brilliant .

Will try and get a copy of Replay..

Abarna | 111 comments Finished it yesterday and I actually quite enjoyed the book. I know the science part of it is total BS, but that didn't ruin the book for me, which isn't saying much because I'm still a newbie when it comes to sci-fi and I'm always more than willing to suspend my disbeliefs. My one gripe with it is the lack of depth in the characters —especially the two female characters, proper caricatures. However, I do like that Jason was not overly macho and prideful;he begs,he cries, he fears, it was quite refreshing — and the writing.I know it's plot driven and I wasn't expecting a great literature out of it, so I still rated it high because it was so gripping;may work better as a movie I guess.

message 50: by Raviarun (new) - added it

Raviarun Nadar (nuraivar) | 77 comments Finished the book couple of days back. Had watched the movies mentioned here ( Triangle, coherence, primer, predestination etc). So not much new in terms of concept. But it didn't feel boring at any point of time. Though, i felt could've been better. There was lot of scope in terms analysing various universes and also the characters in it. Definitely would be better as a movie.
