The book is called Surrender by Sonya Hartnett.

Title: Pretty sure it started with a D
Plot: young boy has an friend who basically is his evil counter part. The friend does bad stuff like setting fires, and the boy I think gets blamed for some of it. The friend ends up not being real and is instead a multiple personality of the boy.
Its not a long book (probably 200 pages or less) but I just remember being engulfed in the book and so surprised by the ending.
