Fantasy is not normally my go-to genre, but I would whole-heartedly recommend UPROOTED to anyone who feels the same. Novik masterfully creates a vivid universe while holding her Polish roots close, each word carefully chosen as she tightly packs an epic adventure into 435 pages. Also, for those who are counting, this book meets and exceeds the Bechtel-Wallace test with a force. While there is a well-timed romance (I kept picturing David Tennent as The Dragon/Sarkan), it takes a backseat to Agnieszka's purpose in life and even to her relationship with Kasia, her best friend. It's the kind of book that I will probably read a few more times in my lifetime; definitely a keeper!
