I'd say it's use the top 5 (English) editions on Goodreads OR use the foreign language copy you hold in your hands... don't bother looking for a better foreign edition... that was basically the ruling last year, right?... Whatever appeared on the #1 book page, or the page count in the foreign copy you own...
Just realized there's a 4th page to this thread... stupid browser bugs... hope I didn't make a contradictory mess of an official mod ruling...
Timelord Iain (Eeyawn) wrote: "Just realized there's a 4th page to this thread... stupid browser bugs... hope I didn't make a contradictory mess of an official mod ruling..."That happens to me all the time!
The default is the 5 most popular versions if you click on other editions. To keep it simple I think that's the way to go.
I know that last year there was a rule that you had to join a buddy read within 2 weeks of the start date for the points to count. Is that still the same for this year? Also what is the earliest you can start for the points to count?

whatever we did last year... I think it was 2 weeks after. I'd say no more than one week before.

A question: If I start a book right now, but finished in January, does it count toward the challenge? Or does all of the reading need to take place beginning January 1st?
This rule is going to be the most difficult for me, I have so many unfinished books that I need to finish ^^
Haha, me too! According to my plans I still need to finish 7 books this month and I already started 5 of them 😅
I was all set to read two books for sure to wrap up a series this year but now I'm like, I can wait a few days and read them in January because then they can count for 2019 challenges. *facepalm*
I should just read them. LOL

Haha! Good luck finishing your reads!! XD
😂

This is correct. :)
This is correct. :)
That rule screwed me up a lot last year. I started Jan 2018 with 4 started books. I had to finish them before I could count any points in Jan. So this year I'm purposefully just enjoying Netflix and not starting any new books :-D

Okay similar question - most of the books on my paused shelf are ones I have read a few pages or a couple of chapters of and stopped because I wasn't in the mood.If I decide to read them in 2019 starting from the beginning those will count right?

Yes, as long as you read the whole book in 2019 it counts, so if you start from the beginning it counts. It's like a reread and those count.

Great :-)

I'm also planning on reading lots of my graphic novels now too, since they aren't big on points.

I ended up in the same state last year and I helped create the rules. January was by far my worst month.

I still need to finish 3 books (one of them is a chunker) before the end of the year. I think it's not going to happen :p
Em Lost In Books wrote: "I will resume Assassin's Fate from 50% today. Can I add this second half to challenge points?"Unfortunately no. Reading date should start Jan 1st.

Correct, nothing in progress counts.

Question: I was looking at listening to some audiobooks, but they have no physical form, so no page count. Is there a time = page count sum I can use to get a rough figure to add the book to my Challenge total (i.e, 1 hour narration = 30 pages) or is it a 'tough, you can't count that one' scenario?

See if you can get the page count off of Amazon and if not I would say 30 pages per hour is about right.

30pgs per hour is about right... some are faster... some are slower... but the majority fall around there... that's 10hrs for a 300 page book...
Dear Mods, which edition should I choose if the longest of the first 5 is a bindup including another book?I'm talking about
and this is the bindup:
I'd say I choose the second longest that is not a bindup.

Thanks, Scott!
I'm still confused about the page count and top 5 editions. Is it the top five english edition or just the top five overall? I just read The Song of Achilles and the top five editions overall includes a non-english edition, which also has the highest page count of all top-five editions, and I've found this to be the case with other books I've read. So just to be completely sure I'm not cheating: the top five editions overall or the top five english editions?

I think it's the top 5 english editions... that's the way I've been treating it, anyway... floating into foreign languages tends to lead to free points, because certain languages require longer words to get the point across...
That being said, I think it's still standing policy to allow the use of whichever book you're reading, if you live in a foreign country and are reading a foreign language book... longer words take longer to read... it's a double edged sword...

I've just finished a book with a page count of 1,071, but my copy is 6th in the GR list - the longest version in the top 5 is 907 pages, so that's the total I've entered in my book page total count. It's an English language version, so I have to take the loss of page count, yes? Which is fair enough; I've been adding pages, so this just balances things out, I'd just appreciate the clarification!

I'm not an official on this, that was just the ruling they made last year for people reading German editions of Way of Kings, and the like... probably best to wait for a mod to clarify if that rule was dropped this year or not...

@Shaitarn - Only use the edition from after the top five if you are reading in another language. :)

Not sure...? I've never come across this issue yet so I'm going to wait fo Scott or Niki to respond to this. They worked out the rules for page numbers. :)

I'd like to ask this question again because I have the exact same issue right now, so it would be great if we could clarify this once and for all.
