I thought this book was somehow Man Booker related when I picked it up, but now fail to find the connection. Regardless, so glad I stumbled across it wherever that was. ' I always say I need "some kind of story" in my books, and that "something needs to be going on" but that's not really true. This book was very subtle it its goings on and I LOVED it.
Gerry and Stella are in their twilight years. Gerry drinks too much and Stella is having an sort of an existential crisis. They go to Amsterdam for a long weekend and end up facing what ails them.
The writing was so good. Funny, real. These people felt like everyday people facing everyday things in a very relatable way. It's sort of like a Kent Haruf book. Simple, but beautiful.
I will definitely be looking for more from MacLaverty.
