This is going to be vague. I can't remember the author or title or book cover. I borrowed the book in paperback form from the library (probably in the late 90s or early 2000s).

The book was about an ex-con who was convicted of his father's murder. He's given a job by the heroine who owns a gas station/convenience store. I can't recall if he was guilty or if it was his sister who committed the murder. His sister was being molested by their father and was committed to a mental hospital. When the hero goes to see her, she's afraid of him because he resembles their father.
