Ulysses by James Joyce Readalong & Re-Readalongs (2014, 2016); Audio Listen-Along (2017)
The first time I read Ulysses, it was with a copy from a used book store. Although an old copy, it was pristine, so probably never read. The printing was really small which made me feel like a super slow reader (a bit overwhelming at the time) and the spine glue was so dry that the pages kept popping out as I turned them.
LOL! It was a real experience.
I'm glad you joined us, Johanna. I think we'll make this a positive experience for everyone. We had a great time last year.

"It's interesting to note that there isn't actually a "Wandering Rocks" episode in the Odyssey. Circe warns Odysseus that no man has ever passed through the rocks alive and thus advises him to pass between Scylla and Charybdis. "
Thank you for pointing this out.

LOL! I'll keep you posted on the pages. From what I recall the book looked pretty sturdy...Petra wrote: "The first time I read Ulysses, it was with a copy from a used book store.

So much fun, Petra. Thanks
Pink , I felt that way when I embarked on reading it last year because I had put it off for so long . Reading it with the group made it somewhat less daunting and this is s great group to read it with . It turned out to be fun . I'm in for my second reading.
Pink, this is a daunting book but more by reputation, I think. Angela is right; reading it with a good group takes the daunting aspect away and makes it fun. Joyce apparently meant the book to be fun, so we start out on the right foot.
I'm glad you are joining us.
I just noticed that the group "Reading the Chunksters" is starting Ulysses on Jan 25, so there will be quite a GR crowd reading the book at the same time. They're reading the Odyssey at the moment.
Johanna wrote: "I just noticed that the group "Reading the Chunksters" is starting Ulysses on Jan 25, so there will be quite a GR crowd reading the book at the same time. They're reading the Odyssey at the moment."Well, that will be fun. If anyone else on GR notices, they'll be wondering what's up.
Petra , great post ! This is why you are such a great discussion leader and made this fun last time around!!
http://biblioklept.org/2010/06/16/how...I especially like this sentence near the end:
' If you can trick a friend into reading it with you, so much the better.'
Ack! He disses the Stephen-on-the-beach scene! I like that scene; its surreal. We've got #3 covered.
I agree, Gill, that last sentence is gold. We've got that covered, too. :D
Thanks, Gill, for posting that.

Thank you for the link!
I also checked out the videos that he takes about by Joseph Campbell. Very good! They are called Wings of Art.
As we get ready to start, here's a reminder of the link to our reading schedule. It's in Post 2 of this thread to make it easy to find:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I'm looking forward to our read, the thoughts of our new members and the new thoughts of our re-readers.
Yep. I got behind on my reading of The Odyssey, trying to get it finished by the weekend! Then I'll be ready to plunge!
Geoffrey, your link to The Joyce Project is amazing! Thank you so much for posting it. Looking forward to this read with a bit of trepidation.
Terri wrote: "Petra, your link is amazing! Thank you so much for posting it. Looking forward to this read with a bit of trepidation."Looking forward also. Terri, this is the best group of people ever to read Ulysses with!

http://joyceproject.com
Click on where it says'Notes' at the top, and then on 'Highlight Links'. If you click on where it says 'Color Coding' it explains that the green links are to do with Ireland (surprise, surprise!), and different colours link to Literature, Dublin etc. This is getting better and better!

Gill, that's an amazing site! It will be so helpful. I might even read the book from this site--there's so much information here. Wonderful!
Terri wrote: "Gill, that's an amazing site! It will be so helpful. I might even read the book from this site--there's so much information here. Wonderful!"Terri, glad you like it. It was Geoffrey who found it in the first place. I only noticed the coloured highlights yesterday.
Thanks, Angela! Can someone explain how this will work? Like how many pages to read and in what time frame.
Terri wrote: "Thanks, Angela! Can someone explain how this will work? Like how many pages to read and in what time frame."The schedule is in Message 2, Terri. (Message 1 is about the previous readalong)
Thanks, Gill. I'll check it out.
One problem I've found is that the edition I'm using doesn't have Episode headings, so it's not clear where one episode ends and the next one starts. I've had to download a different copy, just to keep a check on where the episode breaks are.
Enjoy guys, I will be following your journey. I had planned to join in but with a crazy schedule and exam in March I can't commit.

If that works for you, I'll continue as we go forward.
Heather, I'm sorry that your schedule won't let you read along. Join us whenever you can.
I'm about to start Episode 1. Spoiler alert: Buck Mulligan will climb some stairs. LOL.......
Petra, it's ok for me because I've got a second copy I can check with. I mentioned it in case it's an issue for anyone else. I think the original printing didn't have episode headings??

Question - how can you be both stately and plump at the same time? I guess you can, but it's an odd combo lol
Tom , after reading some of episode one again. I went back and looked at my comments from the first time I read Ulysses with this group and my view hasn't changed - Buck Mulligan is a pompous ass!
I have a story to tell you all at this opening of the first pages of Ulysses. Quebec City, where I live, had four Martello Towers, three of which survive. They actually form a line across the city, and are part of the original defenses of the city built by the British. I live on the "Rue de la Tourelle", named after the Martello Tower that stands slightly below the street - the tower itself, although not visible from my house, is not more than a couple hundred meters from my door. Also, my house is a townhouse on three floors, and I often think of it as a kind of modern equivalent of the Martello Tower. And remember that, like Dublin, Quebec City is heavily Catholic, still, and that I myself am an English interloper in this world. So you see I have a natural affinity to Joyce's version of Ulysses, it inhabits my day to day life. So, Introibo ad altare Joyce!
