Ulysses by James Joyce Readalong & Re-Readalongs (2014, 2016); Audio Listen-Along (2017)
The first time I read Ulysses, it was with a copy from a used book store. Although an old copy, it was pristine, so probably never read. The printing was really small which made me feel like a super slow reader (a bit overwhelming at the time) and the spine glue was so dry that the pages kept popping out as I turned them.
LOL! It was a real experience.
I'm glad you joined us, Johanna. I think we'll make this a positive experience for everyone. We had a great time last year.

Pink , I felt that way when I embarked on reading it last year because I had put it off for so long . Reading it with the group made it somewhat less daunting and this is s great group to read it with . It turned out to be fun . I'm in for my second reading.
That's exactly my thinking too Angela :)
Pink, this is a daunting book but more by reputation, I think. Angela is right; reading it with a good group takes the daunting aspect away and makes it fun. Joyce apparently meant the book to be fun, so we start out on the right foot.

I just noticed that the group "Reading the Chunksters" is starting Ulysses on Jan 25, so there will be quite a GR crowd reading the book at the same time. They're reading the Odyssey at the moment.

Yep. I got behind on my reading of The Odyssey, trying to get it finished by the weekend! Then I'll be ready to plunge!
I already read the scheduled reading for this month and I am finishing up the Odyssey this week.

Click on where it says'Notes' at the top, and then on 'Highlight Links'. If you click on where it says 'Color Coding' it explains that the green links are to do with Ireland (surprise, surprise!), and different colours link to Literature, Dublin etc. This is getting better and better!

One problem I've found is that the edition I'm using doesn't have Episode headings, so it's not clear where one episode ends and the next one starts. I've had to download a different copy, just to keep a check on where the episode breaks are.

If that works for you, I'll continue as we go forward.

Tom , after reading some of episode one again. I went back and looked at my comments from the first time I read Ulysses with this group and my view hasn't changed - Buck Mulligan is a pompous ass!
I have a story to tell you all at this opening of the first pages of Ulysses. Quebec City, where I live, had four Martello Towers, three of which survive. They actually form a line across the city, and are part of the original defenses of the city built by the British. I live on the "Rue de la Tourelle", named after the Martello Tower that stands slightly below the street - the tower itself, although not visible from my house, is not more than a couple hundred meters from my door. Also, my house is a townhouse on three floors, and I often think of it as a kind of modern equivalent of the Martello Tower. And remember that, like Dublin, Quebec City is heavily Catholic, still, and that I myself am an English interloper in this world. So you see I have a natural affinity to Joyce's version of Ulysses, it inhabits my day to day life. So, Introibo ad altare Joyce!
