Amy N. | 13 comments I read maybe the first third of this book when I was babysitting back in high school, so 2001-2005. I thought it was by John Grisham, but none of his books have the right synopsis. The cover that I remember looks like a lot of John Grisham books: dark, someone's shadow falling across the cover, something like that.

The main character is a male therapist who gets blackmailed by someone threatening to expose a supposed rape victim of his: he has years of testimony from another therapist who the supposed victim has been seeing, 'recovering' from the supposed rape. She is threatening to confront her 'rapist' but the main character is being given a chance to cover it up or is being threatened into doing something (maybe pay money?)- only he knows it never happened. He's never seen this woman before, despite her seeming intimate knowledge of what the inside of his office looks like and being on his client list. One of the details that she told the other therapist she's been seeing involves staring at a painting of a sailboat or something while the supposed rape was going on, and the painting is actually in his office. Oh, but the woman did come to his office once, before the main character learns about the plot, so he can't deny he's seen her and she was in his office.

I only had a few hours to read it, so that's as far as I got.
