OVERVIEW:
Fiction. Probably pub. 1993-2005. Tone: noir. Possibly set in UK. Main character and colleague operate security firm that collects and processes routine surveillance video tapes from stores and public places. All tapes reviewed with facial and character recognition systems. Purposes of work appear to be detection of theft, trespass, other crimes; or marital infidelities, business double-crosses.

SPOILERS:

Apparent purposes are genuine but not primary. Narrative and dialogue are oblique and suggest firm is up to something. Revealed late in book: Firm's best clients are people targeted for prosecution, revenge, assassination (e.g., organized crime members, politicians, whistleblowers). Firm scours surveillance tapes; identifies from them a near-look-alike of a client; kidnaps look-alike; substitutes, undetected, the look-alike for client (while client is being stalked by assassin?); then uses method to kill look-alike (e.g., car bomb) that leaves enough but not too much identifying evidence.

I don't know what this book is, but we need to hire you to train people how to post!!

Do you sense the author is well known, like on the order of a Frederick Forsyth, or obscure?

I agree Lobstergirl. I think I'm in love with Thom, just because he seems to have actually read the guidelines on how to post. You feel like giving lessons Thom? lol
