Many works of literature contain a character who intentionally deceives others. The character’s dishonesty may be intended either to help or to hurt. Such a character, for example, may choose to mislead others for personal safety, to spare someone’s feelings, or to carry out a crime.

Choose a moment from Ian McEwan's novel, ATONEMENT, in which a character deceives others. Then, in a well-written response, analyze the motives for that character’s deception and discuss how the deception contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole.
Do not merely summarize the plot.

A deceptive character could be Briony Tallis. Her Honesty ended up hurting and affecting others close to her such as her older sister Cecilia and close family friends like Robbie. Briony claimed to be protecting her older sister Cee from the "dangerous" Robbie, but instead, she interfered with her personal life and made things worse. Briony sent her older sisters love of her life to jail, for allegedly "hurting" their cousin, but he did no such thing. Briony assumed that because she caught them together earlier. Briony claimed to be to herself and her writing, but she was to be involved in everything else. I believe the main reason Briony sent Robbie to jail was that she had a crush on him deep down that she did not know about. That contributes to the meaning as a whole because it could explain jealousy between all three of them and the actions that were followed.

Amanda Barbon's response:
I strongly agree with Adriana's point of view on Briony Tallis. Briony only thought she was being honest and doing the right thing, but deep down she wanted to do what she did. This is confirmed when we find out that she had a crush on him and that she genuinely believed that Robbie was a "sex maniac". However, this was all because she interfered with others personal life and was rather satisfied that she was entering the 'adult world'.

In the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan, Briony Tallis defines deception. In the beginning of the novel, she was confused between plays and stories, she was always concerned about her future. Following that, was where it all started, the fountain scene, then the letter which made her confirm her doubts about Robbie Turner. It is totally normal for her to be concerned about her older sister and her safety, but where she goes wrong is that she goes behind Cecilia’s back and slithers in her personal life, only to make things way worse than it should’ve become. Briony believes that she’s being honest and doing the right thing when she accused Robbie Turner of the crime that flipped the whole story, but deep down she did it for her own satisfaction. This is mearly because we are later informed that she had a crush on Robbie and when she confessed it, he obviously turned back on it. Bonnie might have done it out of jealousy or simply to deceive the others. However, it doesn’t matter anymore the why because what it did cause was misery for all including herself.

In Ian McEwan’s novel, Atonement, the character of Briony Tallis deceives everyone. She misleads everyone to believe that Robbie Turner was a rapist. On page 140 it says, “Briony stared at her, amazed. Attacked, betrayed, by the one she only longed to protect.” In this quote Briony was staring at Cecilia this shows that her motive for her misleads and deceptions were to protect Cecilia from Robbie. However, her lies actually ended hurting Cecilia and killing Robbie. Briony’s lies contribute to the tone of suspense and tension of the book since the reader knows she is lying but everyone thinks she is saying the truth. Her misleads also help create the theme of guilt in the book since later on she wanted to repent for convicting an innocent man and imagined a scene where Robbie came back to Cecilia instead of dying of an infection and she asking for forgiveness to both of them for ruining their love.

I have to agree with Andres on how Briony just deceived everyone and somehow made herself play the role of the victim. Briony's acts could've been just bursts of anger that she felt with Robbie and she just so happened to ruin his life.

Briony Tallis was able to serve as the deceptive character in the novel, Atonement. She was able to change other peoples' perception about Robbie as she said to Lola," He's deceived us for years"(pg112). Lola's new perception of Robbie also caused her to falsely accuse him of sexually assaulting her during the search for the twins, though she wasn't sure at the time. Of course, these false accusations of him assaulting not only Lola, but Celia as well, caused him to serve jail time. Her innocent honesty was just to simply make sure that Robbie does not stick around her sister and family any longer. Also, she had thought that she can no longer trust him even after building a strong relationship for over a long time already. That was her motive, to ensure that Robbie must pay for his apparent wrong doings, even though he's completely innocent. Just like what was said on page 157, it says," He was attacking my sister. If I hadn't come, I don't know what he would have done." This phrase from the novel shows as if she has full responsibility of making sure that her older sister is safe and protected. So, Robbie going to jail resulted in Cecilia weakening her relationship with the family for trusting her thirteen year old sister, and Robbie would not forgive Briony weakening their relationship as well. In the end, since Briony was not even so sure if she had Robbie with Lola that night, she knew that she was lying of her accusation. Over five years later she had felt guilty of her decision ever since, and that's why the novel is given the title 'Atonement', in which one tries to correct his or her wrongdoings. Her first twenty years were literally defined by the title of the book.

In Ian McEwan's novel, "Atonement", Lola Quincey deceived her entire family by concealing the truth behind her attacker to protect her pride and personal safety. In the novel, Lola was raped by Paul Marshall when Johnathan and Pierrot ran away and was also attacked by him in the nursery upon their arrival to the Tallis house hold. After both assault's Lola lied to her family about her assailant , at first she said her brothers attacked her in the nursery and then she used and encouraged Briony into falsely accusing Robbie for her rape. Lola deceives everyone by hiding behind the mentality of an innocent victim, she didn't need to bring up the courage to denounce anyone because Briony was already doing it for her. Lola's dishonesty was due to the fact that she wanted to keep her rape from Paul Marshall a secret ,to avoid any shame or embarrassment that she may face later. Her deceit resulted in Robbie's wrongful arrest and ruined Briony's relationship with Cecilia.

A character who strongly deceives throughout the entire novel of "Atonement" is Lola Quincey. She not only acts like a bully throughout the novel but also as a victim in order to protect her reputation and that of Paul. Lola had been sexually assaulted by Paul twice and both times she has blamed someone else for his crime. The first was with her brother where she lied to everyone in order to have her brother take the blame and not Paul. Then the second time she deceives Briony who is unsuspecting of Lola's plan into blaming Robbie for the second time that she was assaulted by Paul. Through the use of her deception Lola takes control of peoples lives and what they think of her. This deception results in the ruining of Briony, Cecilia, and Robbie's life. Her deception was not detected throughout the novel because of how well she played the victim card when she was around those around her. Even though she ruined peoples lives she did not care because her pride and Paul's identity was kept a secret and that's all that she cared about.

I agree with Sadie on the fact that Lola Quincey deceived everyone through most of the book. Her deception ruined the life of Robbie and the relationship of Briony and Cecilia but protected her own pride. Lola didn't care about what happened to anyone else as long as the identity of her rapist and what had happened was not exposed.

Mr.marshall eventually attacks and rapes Lola I believe telling her to blame Robbie because she says "I'm sorry I didn't see, I'm sorry."(pg155) But later when birony ask's if it was Robbie shes says "yes" (pg155). Leading me to believe that Mr.marshall is forcing her to lie and deceive the family. As he seems to be calm at the fact that Lola was raped and fast to not fight for Robbie's innocence, Later on in the novel atonement him and Lola end up getting married, Maybe as part of their deception all those years.

I agree with ChedMichael concerning Briony Tallis as a deceptive character in Atonement. Although Briony only intended to protect Cecilia from harm, her naïve view of Robbie and Cecilia's relationship caused her to intentionally lie and accuse Robbie of a crime he didn't commit. Thus, ruining Robbie's life and her special relationship with Cecilia.

In "Atonement," Briony Tallis is a deceiver in the novel, she was able to manipulate Lola into believing that Robbie was her rapist, when in fact it wasn't. Briony wasn't certain that it was Robbie, but she wanted it to be Robbie. This manipulation started when she said, "He's deceived us for years,"(page 112). As for her motives, it began with protecting her sister, but as her hatred towards Robbie grew, the more she insisted that he was a "monster" and a "maniac." Her immaturity may also play a factor in her beliefs, ironically her eyes deceived her own self. Her actions affected the meaning of the book as a whole because of how it impacted the plot and how it played out. In the end, her guilt engulfed her mind, leading to the theme of atonement, as she was trying to atone for her actions.

I agree with Andres, Briony does end up hurting her sister instead of helping her. As unfortunate this is, I don't think the outcome was what Briony expected, she ended up losing her relationship with her sister. This led to Briony realizing what she did wrong, which has a sense of coming of age.

A character who deceived everyone is Briony. She imagines scenarios that she believes are real, but they are not. When Cecilia and Robbie were confessing their love to each other Briony took it the wrong way and thought Robbie was assaulting her sister, which put the thought of Robbie being evil in her head. Then later she finds Lola who was actually assaulted, and Briony automatically assumes it is Robbie without actually seeing it is him. Robbie is sent to prison, later to the army and finally passed away, and it’s all Briony fault. She also ruined her sister’s life by taking the love of her life away from her. As a whole, the fact that Briony deceives everyone and ruins two people’s lives builds the theme of the novel which is guilt and forgiveness. When Briony realizes what she has done she carries the guilt with her and tries to gain forgiveness, but never succeeds.

I agree with you on the fact that Lola did deceive her family by not telling them the whole truth. This made me realized that she was also at fault for Robbie going to prison and his life being ruined.

In Atonement, it is safe to say that Briony Tallis deceives everyone in the novel. Briony witnesses Robbie and Cecilia in the library and assumes Robbie is assaulting her, which he isn't. After witnessing this, Briony was convinced Robbie raped Lola even if Lola was not completely sure it was him. She had let Robbie, who was completely innocent, land in prison because of the lie and it ruined his life. Although, her intention was to help her family she ended up deceiving them lives, instead. Briony's inability to decipher adult motives had her deceive those she thought she served justice for. Her actions cause her to later feel guilty and she spends years trying to fix her mistakes to no avail. Briony's road to redemption for her actions help build the theme of forgiveness and guilt in the book.

I agree that Paul Marshall was one of the characters in Atonement who deceived the family. I like the way you put that Paul told Lola to lie and how he seemed calm when she was raped. They may have both conspired in order to hide the truth because of Lola's shame and Paul's business could have been taken away from him.

Briony is a deceptive character in the novel because she deceives characters for her own satisfaction. She’s honestly a nuisance because she believes her dishonesty is helping the ones she loves while its interfering with their personal lives. When Briony Tallis accuses Robbie of raping her cousin Lola, she does it because she believes she’s protecting her sister, which there is nothing wrong with, but the problem arises when she has to calumniate Robbie. Although, it was foreshadowed that Briony had romantical feelings for Robbie, that isn’t an acceptable excuse to do what she did. To make matter worse, Briony blemishes her friendship with Robbie because of the allegations and she corrupts her sister’s relationship with Robbie.

In Ian McEwan’s novel “Atonement”, a character that was deceptive was Lola. She’s one of Briony’s visiting cousins and the reader can automatically see right through her actions. Everyone thinks Briony’s play is boring but Lola being the snake she is, blackmails her younger brothers into being a part of it anyways. As we can see, Lola knows how to get what she wants. One can argue that it was for a good reason because at the time Briony maybe needed a confidence boost. However, wrong is wrong no matter the scenario. Lola goes on to show more of her “skill” by manipulating Briony into giving her the lead role of her play. It’s obvious that Briony wanted that part and Lola knew. As seen in chapter 1, Briony can barely get a word in with defending herself. Lola then tries to make Briony feel bad for her because Lola can relate more to the character. It just shows her true colors as a person. Lola was deceptive in the fact that you would think that your houseguest would be polite and not walk over you. The only good thing is that it showed Briony that the world doesn’t revolve around her.

I agree all the way with Dacia. That’s a unique perspective to put Briony under. She’s not this innocent little Shakespeare. She’s selfish by only thinking of herself and being childish.
