Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

I downloaded this book a long while ago based on my neighbor's recommendation but never got around to reading it. Coincidentally she just asked me last night if I'd read it yet and swears it's a really good book! Between our buddy read and her asking about it, now I'm getting really excited about reading this one. Hopefully it lives up to the high bar I have now set for it.. HAHA!

The other book we are reading (The Knife of Never Letting Go) also looks great so it matter to me which we read first. I'm not sure what other challenges or buddy reads you may have going on so if you want to let me know when you're ready to start reading one of these, that works!

Not sure if you were able to start Unwind today? I was able to start reading after work and breezed through the first 11 chapters. So far.... (view spoiler)[ I find it heartbreaking but it's like watching a slow moving train wreck... I want to put it down and think about something cheery - give my kiddos a hug - watch some mindless TV... But like I said, two hours later and finally had to out the book down and step away... I can't fathom how disposable the children are... I want to adopt them all. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ More saaaaaaad stories of the other unwound-escapees... still hard to hear how parents didn't want their children. Unimaginable. Would love to know what Connor wrote in his letter to his parents. It explained how he started writing the letter in anger but ended up with fond memories. Heart-wrenching memories I'm sure. Not sure how parents can live with themselves after deciding such a fate for their young ones and then to receive this letter from their son years later... I can't imagine. (hide spoiler)]

I'm really liking it so far! I've been trying to pace myself with this one. The story line is just so unbelievable though, you know?! CRAZY!!

Glad Lev found Umber - even if Umber is a bit of a nut case. So weird he has taken on a part of the person's brain "chunk" that has been implanted. Makes me think the whole 'unwinding' process should be done away with! LOL! (Like I was bought into it to begin with... this whole thing creeps me out still!)

Nice there is a camp to house rescued unwinders and that Risa & Conner made it there OK. Unfortunately, so did Roland. What a pig. I'm glad they are looking for Lev and actually hoping he makes it, despite his turning them all in at the school.

Read up to Chapter 49 - which sounds like I made more progress than I did because there are a TON of little itty-bitty-teenie-tiny chapters.

(view spoiler)[ Totally crazy twist with the humpty-dumpty story being actually based on some truth - and the truth being that the ring leader of the whole Unwind rescue camp is the father of 'humpty-dumpty'! OMG! Poor MB!

Conner was sooooo lead astray... He thinks he's being a good guy but then everything is not what he thought. Damn Roland for turning Conner & Risa in! He is such an asshole!

Conner was just getting a real opportunity to step up in a leadership role too. It was very impressive how he took charge in all that crazy chaos.

Also, very curious about the Alaskan pipe work that Lev and his 2 sidekicks volunteered for.. Risa thinks she won't see Lev again, but then the book foreshadowed that Lev will be making a comeback appearance... Inquiring minds want to know what that's all about.... hmm....

My only question is the whole thing with Lev... I feel like I missed a part of the story... One minute he was with Umber and they are digging up the box of shiny jewelry in the back yard of the parents who's brain-chunk he has implanted... Then he shows up a totally changed and toughened up character at the "farm"... What did I miss???? (hide spoiler)]

It's a really good series.
I'm having a mid life crisis again lol, took my little boy for a haircut yesterday to get ready for back to school on Monday.
Thought to myself hmm I'm bored with mine (shoulder length blonde) so now I'm a dark brown girl with a pixie cut, didn't recognise myself when I looked in the mirror this morning haha!
