What are you reading in August '14
I finished reading the Frontier Magic trilogy by Patricia C. Wrede. Very good alternate history, a bit Little House on the Prairie with magic. Now listening to the Bitterbynde trilogy by Cecilia Dart-Thornton, on book 2 The Lady of the Sorrows. Gorgeous books if you don't mind a LOT of flowery language and tons of descriptions, a fantasy world where celtic myths and legends from the Wild Hunt to waterhorses, swan maidens to hobgoblins, are everywhere and dangerous.
I'm currently reading the Judith Tarr omnibus-edition Avaryan RisingAvaryan Rising. Not quite sure how I fell about it yet.

I didn't get on with these. I read rather than listened which may be better. I remember a seven page description of the cupboard contents. Nearly lost my sanity. Then the end, I'd rant but you aren't there yet.

I just finished re-reading the entire Abercrombie. I loved it as before, but you have to be realistic about these things - it wasn't easy. XDToo much grimdark at the same time, I'll have to find something silly now.
First time bought a book solely for the cover. So far, entertaining in a "can't wait to get off work to read" kinda way. The topic is new to me (supernatural).

Oh you can add to the thread about book covers...
Helen wrote: "Read A Monster Calls earlier, oh the tears. Was like that Robin Hobb book with the wolf."Another.......for my, ever increasing, to be read pile.
Anything, with a wolf...fox....
Umm...beaver....owl.....cat....horse..............
.........dragon.....unicorn....

you are just a big softy x
For starters Night of the Hunter, Drizzt's saga latest installment, but I need a reread of some of the previous books, it's getting a little confusing. Blood in Snow, last book of a nice trilogy, and Storms of Lazarus, for a bit of romance. Half a King and Prince of Fools are finally out as well, and I plan to finish my August course with them :)Lady*M wrote: "I just finished re-reading the entire Abercrombie. You know, my thoughts exactly. I've recently finished all Joe Abercrombie's books (just loved The Heroes if I ever need to pick one) and after them, I just needed a break, slower pace and lighter reads like an anthology (Neverland's Library) and romance as well (Shadows of Asphodel). I guess it's the Joe Abercrombie effect!
Good god, how the time does fly. I'm currently 3/4 done with The Curse of the Mistwraith, my umpteenth reread although it's been a while. And I'm more caught into the intensity of it than before. Perhaps because I know what's coming.

I sobbed so much that I couldn't carry on reading for over half an hour.
Brenda, the wolf thing is book one of Hobbs third trilogy, fool something... No animals in Monster Calls but incredibly sad.

Well.....as sad as the wolf thing was, it was beautiful also.I always try to wait for a good and quite moment to read that part.
I am reading another YA fantasy novel... This one is called ....The False Princeby Jennifer Nielson.I am a little over 100 pages in, and I am really enjoying it.
Finished White Fire and am starting Fearsome Journeys: The New Solaris Book of Fantasy, edited by Jonathan Strahan. Contributors include Scott Lynch, Elizabeth Bear and Glen Cook, amongst many others.
I'm nearly done with Midnight Tides by Steven Erikson. I've also been reading a lot of books for a Clean Out Your eReader Challenge. Just finished Brood of Bones by A.E. Marling, really enjoyed it. Very colorful, very different fantasy.
I'm currently reading a TON of books. I tend to overload myself. I'm focusing on these three books atm though: Less Doing, More Living: Make Everything in Life Easier, Daughter of the Gods: A Novel of Ancient Egypt, and Fortune's Fool. So, several different books. I'm going to try and read The Hero and the Crown as well. I've had a copy for ages, but never got to it. Even though I have read The Blue Sword.
I'm looking around for some more fantasy to read, although I'm also leaning toward some history, perhaps the bronze age since I'm not as familiar with that period as I'd like.I'm also going to be heading off to a local market this weekend, and there are always some great books to be had for cheap there.
I am so happy to be reading Chronicles of the Black Company! It was slow starting - around page 75 of the first book was when it really picked up and I am on the second book and can not put it down! After I finish this I am off to begin The Way of Kings!
I teach the fourth grade and go back to work in a few weeks so my summer of gaming and fun, free reading comes to a close soon!!

The Assyrian and The Blood Star, both by Nicholas Guild, might be of interest. If you don't mind George R.R. Martin levels of sex & violence, that is.
reading curse of the mistwraith, im about 75% done. then going to continue on with rest of series, ive been trying to get round reading this series for a long time now and im very excited.
I am reading Tower Lord and may pick up Prince of Thorns after that, or continue the Farseer Trilogy with Royal Assassin which I recently started. And I won a free copy of Half a King so depending on when it arrives I may read it too. That's a lot of reading....we'll see!
I am Reading The Hero of Ages. This morning "stuff" got real and I missed my bus stop.... and the one after! Hoping for a good finish to the Trilogy. :)
Also recently finished Half a King which was amazing.
Reading the Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan. Finding it much darker than Blood Song, and not enough Vaelin bits so far.
I'm working on The Path of Daggers. Should I finish it, it's on to Promise of Blood and Before They Are Hanged.
I just finished Half a King. Love Abercrombie but disapponted with this book. I did not know it was YA.
Ian wrote: "reading curse of the mistwraith, im about 75% done. then going to continue on with rest of series, ive been trying to get round reading this series for a long time now and im very excited."It's excellent and I don't understand why it's not more widely read. It's complex but so are many other books. I finished The Curse of the Mistwraith and The Ships of Merior and am into Warhost of Vastmark now on my reread. It's just as rich this time through and has me just as enthralled as the other times I've read the series.
I got sucked in to the Sandman Slim books thanks to Amazon's Daily Deals. On book 2 now Kill the Dead and really liking them except for sometimes finding the MC a little over the top in his miserable, sarcastic, self loathing, though mostly I'm having fun reading them.
Black Sun Rising which is about 600 pages. I'm more than halfway. Usually, I get daunted by the size of books like this, but this book is really entertaining.
Sandra wrote: "Ian wrote: "reading curse of the mistwraith, im about 75% done. then going to continue on with rest of series, ive been trying to get round reading this series for a long time now and im very excit..."Im almost done with the first book and im absolutely loving it, its a excellent book and ive just purchased 4 more in the series so i can continue straight on.

I'm throwing in the towel on Scourge of the Betrayer. It's a really fun book, but it's just plain not the sort of book that does it for me anymore.

Here's my review
Earlier this evening I finished The Troop. WOW did I love it. Does anyone have recommendations for other horror novels that will totally creep me out? I haven't read much in the genre.I'm currently reading Boneshaker and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm also listening to The Robots of Dawn on audio, but honestly I haven't been listening to it much. I'm finding it bland. Were the other Robot books this bland? Maybe I'm just stuck in a rut because I'm in the chapters that consist of Baley questioning the Roboticist and it seems to go on foreeeeeever. I love Asimov though, so I'll stick with it.
As soon as I finish Spring (not enjoying as much as I had hoped), I'm going to re-read The Black Prism and The Blinding Knife. I'm very excited for book 3!
I finished The Hero and the Crown and after sorting my collection that had become disorganized from moving I discovered some of my lost book markers still in the books I forgot I had been reading so I am going to finish my reread of The Gods in Anger and then finish Day of the Dragon. I also found a book mark in Gauntlgrym but realized I have missed a few earlier books in the series so I will come back to that one later.
Just finished up Echopraxia by Peter Watts, coming soon. A hard read, it's the densest hard science fiction book I've ever read. But jeez, it's downright amazing for it. Can't help but highly recommend this one, as hard a read as it is.

I got several books I'm trying to read for August... The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson
The Rithmatist By Brandon Sanderson
Dune by Frank Herbert
The Runaway King By Jennifer Nielson
The Shadow Throne By Jennifer Nielson
I Probably won't be able to get to all of them, but I will try my best
Currently this month in fantasy I'm readingThe Blade Itself
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe(as a read aloud to my kids -- they are enjoying it!)
The Two Towers(a reread)
The Lies of Locke Lamora(I read this not long ago, but the Audible was so affordable after buying the Kindle version that I couldn't resist. And the reader is spectacular!)
I'm hoping to get to the sequels to the Abercrombie book later this month, and I have The Dragon's Path in the stack. If I have time I'll start Words of Radiance. Oh, and The Return of the King, of course. (Realistically, Sanderson will have to wait until next month!)
