We're getting old! ... do you remember waiting at Bus Stops when you were a teenager and hearing old folk rabbiting on in hushed tones to each other about their Bowel habits and the state of their Feet and thinking that'll never EVER be me?!! - LOL!!!

Then you hit 30 and suddenly everything either starts slowing down or hurting, and needing Medication!!! ;o>

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yep and that "Oh I can remember when all this were fields" was one usually wheeled out by senior citizens. Thing is, there's an estate a couple of mins walk from here (I still call it the NEW estate even tho it's been there for 25 or so years) and I really can remember when that was all fields! There was a haystack there that we used to play in - haystacks are absolute magnets to kids I reckon.
I'm pretty sure I utter those very "I remember when..." words whenever I've walked through said estate with any of the Blast-Juniors, despite rolling me eyes at it when I wuz little. Maybe stuff like that becomes hardwired after one's heard it enough times and then lays dormant until one hits a certain age? : )

Blastronaut | 1061 comments No American Werewolf In London on that list Collette? One of the very best 80s horrors for my money.
Also The Thing, tho one could argue that's a sci-fi. Fit's into both I guess but I'd say it was more horror.
Two of the very best horror flicks of all time there, not just the 80s. Obviously just my opinion mind.
EDIT - Just thought of another - Dawn Of The Dead. There's a classic, tho not sure if that was '79 or '80. Guess I'm gonna have to have a look now...
EDIT2 - Bugger, was a tad out there, it was '78!

message 405: by Collette (new)

Collette | 6184 comments I like The Thing too, Blastro. Did your thing though thinking it was the late 70's rather than 82. Re Dawn Of The Dead, I prefer the remake. D and I went to see it in the pictures, and I though it was belting. I've never saw AWIL to the best of my knowledge. Another omission's A Nightmare On Elm Street. I kinda liked it at the time, but from part 2 on, it got more and more ridiculous.

message 406: by Blastronaut (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah they did way too many Elm Streets. They haven't aged too well either.
Oohh ya need to watch American Werewolf m'dear, it's a classic. The bit where he first changes still looks good today and was bloody incredible back then. The film has a nice thread of humour running through it too; add to that, a great soundtrack and ya got a winner. "I see the bad moon rising" - yeah it's making me wanna watch it again. Maybe put it on tonight.
Not sure if I'd rate DOTD remake better than the original but do most definitely agree that's it's a cracking effort; certainly one of the better remakes in any genre. Am not the biggest fan of remakes in general but they sometimes work out; the 80s version of The Thing is a perfect example. They couldn't leave well alone tho could they - had to go and redo it again. Didn't turn out for the best imo. The creature near the end looked like some screwed up LSD version of a Spitting Image puppet! : )

message 407: by Collette (new)

Collette | 6184 comments I suppose the clever thing about The Thing remake was they made it as a prequal. I actually quite like it. And re music soundtracks i love The Lost Boys. 😃

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Was gonna say 'No Braindead in there Post?' but it is in fact a 90s film. I always relate that film with the 80s for some reason.

The Alien films are among the best full stop! Regardless of genre. I even reckon the fourth installment is - tho not up to it's predecessors' standards - a fine watch. I'm a sucker for a 'collection of criminals/misfits/antiheroes taking on the baddies' Dirty Dozen style adventure. Absolutely loved Prometheus too, which just leaves Alien Covenant... which I thought was shit.
Will also give a nod to the first couple of Hellraiser flicks too. Nice n nasty. Third one was terrible mind.
Same with Evil Dead; loved the first two, and while I don't think the third was a total loss, it din't do much for me.
Return Of The Living Dead is fantastic. Bloody hilarious! Still goster at that even now and I seen it many many times.
The Howling, while I don't rate it as highly as AWIL, is arguably the most scary of all werewolf flicks.. the ones I've seen in any case.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Lostboys soundtrack is a good un Collette. Would make my top ten movie soundtracks alongside the likes of Trainspotting, Rocky, 4, Jackie Brown etc. Actually the aforementioned Return Of The Living Dead has a decent punky soundtrack going for it.

Talking of music in films, I gotta say, the opening to Fallen ('98) is first class. The Stones 'Time Is On My Side' playing whilst convict dances his way to the 'lecce chair like he's going into the ring for a big fight. Excellent. Mighty fine film is that, and really worth a peep if not seen it before.

message 412: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments "Return Of The Living Dead"

as well as being a genre defining classic film, the soundtrack is likewise great! when i worked in record shops we sold a goodly amount of the album as it was the only source for the cramps 'surfin' dead'. as i recall the company rep gave me a cool front and back printed t-shirt by way of promoting it - 'they're back, they're hungry, and they're not vegetarian' was the legend printed,

Sera69 | 1919 comments Was going to cry at the lack of Tremors in these lists but it's a 1990 movie.

On the subject of which...

Tremors (1990)
Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1996)
Tremors 3: Back to Perfection (2001)
Tremors: The Series (2003)
Tremors 4: The Legend Begins (2004)
Tremors 5: Bloodlines (2015)
Tremors 6: A Cold Day in Hell (2018)

Surprisingly, none of which are as bad as they would be expected to be.

'Fallen' is a brilliant film, Blastro. We bought it on dvd mega years ago and have watched it a good few times. Denzel at his best. I went out and bought The Stones "Hot Rocks" album just for that one song.

Re horror/thriller films have you saw The First Power" (Lou Diamond Philips) and "Jack's Back" (James Spader)? They're both worth a watch if you haven't..especially the former.

message 415: by Blastronaut (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Tbh Collette, I don't remember seeing DW in a bad film. Yeah Fallen a cracking film; bit of a dark horse and a tad underappreciated I reckon.
Not seen either of those two and tho - with my memory a tad shot up in places - I don't have a mental watch-list, I shall pass the titles on to Jay who's always got a film on her laptop in most spare hours. She does like a horror and will remind me to watch em too.

Return Of The Living Dead contains another one of those fun musical moments I referred to with Fallen. Partytime (45 Grave whom I'd never heard of before seeing the film) fits brilliantly with all the dead popping up through the ground.
D'ya still own the T-shirt Tech, and does it still fit? I kept a couple of T-shirts from back in the day and there's not a chance I'd get em on now. I guess I'm just trying to find out if ya managed to keep in decent shape or turned into a fat basket like meself?!

Loved the first Tremors flick Sera, but am afraid I got nowt down for the following two. Didn't even realize there was SIX!! I mean by the third we'd lost both of the main two characters and it'd been whittled down to the survivalist type dude with the guns... can't remember his name. They manage to drag anyone back for those other three (apart from The Bacon, he's busy selling phones and stuff) or is it just left to the horses to rescue the town?

message 416: by Craig White (new)

nah, always been a bit of a tubber, paving the way for those that weren't, but now are, in a kind of 'told you so' style!
t-shirt, as with most, worn till shredded beyond use, and it would probably be a little snugger than before. just a little!
best line in Return Of The Living Dead? zombie into ambulance radio - "send more paramedics!"

I regret seeing recent The Magnificent Seven remake with DW in lead role as a badass gunslinger in wild west. He's fine actor, but this was stupid idea imo, same goes with Idris Elba in Dark Tower by Stephen King novel. I know it's very trendy nowadays all these racial/gender swaps, but c'mon, have some sense!
What next, Michael Caine (or even better Meryl Streep) as Uncle Tom?

I fear you've missed the Hollywood point behind race/gender swaps, which is to 'Smash the white patriarchy! Smash it! Kuh! Kuh! Kuh!' So you'd never ever see a white dude replace a non-white character.

Idris Elba's a cracking actor but it was utterly imbecilic to cast him in the lead role in The Dark Tower flick. A bit of a King fan, me, and I've read all the Dark Tower books and the film does no justice to em whatsoever. It's like the filmmakers didn't even read the books. And obviously the main character, The Gunslinger, is styled on yer basic Wild West gunfighter, at least in appearance.
I mean I know what Hollywood's trying to do, trying to 'de-whitewash' everything but.. well, they can still do that by using more black characters in lead roles. Surely that's all they have to do?

You'd think so. Unfortunately most of these idiots haven't got the intelligence to create new characters when there are plenty of existing ones whose longstanding fans they can outrage by changing their ethnicity, gender or sexual preferences because.... "diversity". When their 'woke' versions then crash and burn (repeatedly) they then blame the fans.

Yes, big fan of Dark Tower myself, didn't watch the movie to avoid disappointment as even King himself mentioned Roland as Clint Eastwood lookalike and that's what fans would expect to see. Or someone like Vigo Mortensen (well Clint apparently too oldish now).
Alright, Idris Elba aint no fool wisely turning down James Bond role.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Spiders, woodlice and centipedes - ughhhhh **** that for a laugh! Those big bloody house spiders that ya get knocking about. I mean where do they come from? Yer just sat in bed watching a bit of TV and the coast's all clear, then seconds later you see it outta the corner of your eye and ya know exactly what it is before you turn to focus properly. Just sat there on the wall doing nowt in particular. Do they just teleport in or what? And when approached with the spider catcher, if you're not on the ball... they're off! Like shit off a shovel!! How do they move that quickly when wearing eighteen-hole Doc Marts???

One night many moons ago we tried to catch one of the really large ones in the bedroom and made a bugger of it. Them were pre-spider catcher days and all that was available in the room was one of those gift bags that you get bottles of cheap champagne in. Was never gonna work was it.
Got it in the bag but whilst trying to close the top, it's big hairy legs popped out over the edge and I dropped the bag in a panic and it was away. We slept downstairs that night. I shit thees not!
Jay's got a little better with dealing with em since then but not me.

Proper coward, me.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Well, I guess I just don't got the cajones for the job.
Spider catcher? Oh that's an ingenious contraption originally devised by the Cult of Mighty Babson in the 80s. The fly they make (out of cheese) for the bait is a thing to behold in itself and takes several days to sculpt! Obviously the device can't be purchased legally in many countries due to its use of live ammunition but if ya know the right people and you're an Arachnophobe, it's a worthy investment.

message 446: by Blastronaut (last edited Nov 13, 2019 05:54AM) (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Ha ha, the story of Babson is a long one and not (at least I don't think) something you'd find on t'internet. Mighty Babson was a strange associate of mine from secondary school but obviously that wasn't his real name. Not a name he was particularly happy with either it must be said but it fit like the proverbial glove. The 'Cult' of Babson may or may not be just a figment of my dodgy imagination. : )

Our spider catcher isn't as fancy as if first appears, Derek. The 'box' at the end of the stick has a sliding panel or 'door' for said crawler to enter and exit. Thing is, once you've placed it over the spider, you have to turn the catcher clockwise (or... thinking about it, anticlockwise, depending on which side the door's on) whilst still holding against the wall and let gravity do its thing and slide the door shut.
I believe that for an extra few quid, one can purchase a catcher with a trigger-type affair on the handle that closes the door. Daft as they seem, these devices really are of benefit to Arachnophobes who want Boris out but not to kill him. There's a cue right there for anyone who wants to get political...
