Blastronaut | 1061 comments Val - Dunno if you'll read this but out of the few of my mixes that made it on to t'internet or disc, there's possibly three or four that - while not containing any Prydz/Pryda/Cirez D - are similar in style (and time-frame) to that list we spoke of, so may be of interest to yer son.
Haven't a clue why I din't think to do this in the first place. Said mixes are on CD, and tho each set is continuous from start to finish, all tracks are still selectable from the point where they start coming into the mix. No audible gaps at these points either (Jay sorts out this part of the process with the recording software, and tho to anyone who even slightly knows their tech it may be a sinch, to me it's wizardry, Luddite that I am) so ya still get a 'flowing' undisturbed set/mix.
I shall send copies of these sets to you - witness the magic of my mixing!!! : )

EDIT - Also goes without saying that you'll get a copy of any future set containing stuff by Prydz. Just gotta pull me finger out and get it done is all.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Ah cheers Val. I know quite a few of those (and some fine tunes therein) but gotta admit, not familiar with all by any means; that's either cos can't put the name to a tune - which happens a hell of a lot - or I simply have not heard it before.
I shall peruse these mighty lists, extracting tracks of which I may not be familiar with and Oootubing em! Am almost sure there's some of the above tracks on the mixes I'm sending forth, tho not 100% sure. Yep, I can't even remember my own setlists! Good job they're written down in several places. By the look of the above lists tho, I'm convinced those mixes should go down well.
Nice one m'dear.

I shall produce my own list of ballads soon.

That they were m'dear, that they were. Have very fond memories of the 80s and many of those records were part of the soundtrack. I realize that ballads are 'uncool' but I likes what I likes and am not about to pretend otherwise. Maybe a fella has to get in touch with his feminine side to appreciate a good power-ballad... or any ballad? : )

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Most excellent 'non-metal' ballads...

Man In The Corner Shop - The Jam *
Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
Perfect Day - Lou Reed
Spectators Of Suicide - Manics
Glycerine - Bush
Higher Than The Sun - Primal Scream
Shame - Smashing Pumpkins
Forever - Dropkick Murphys
Ten Story Love Song - Stone Roses
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley **

*Tomorrow it'd be Ghosts and the next day probably Corner Shop again. Really tough to pick between those two.

** With respect (obviously) to LC, I can't help but dig Buckley's cover; maybe cos that was the first version I heard I dunno. For what it's worth, I can't stand the other covers.

J wants to go down to her dad's in the summer so I may see ya later in the year. The last time it fell through for reasons I shan't go into on here but it's looking more likely this time I think. He's actually coming up today as he's gonna be in the Midlands anyway so we'll thrash summat out I suppose. Don't hold ya breath for too long tho, I won't make any promises till nearer the time.

I appreciate the Jam. Saw them in 77 or early 78 at Sheff Top Rank and the owner of Revolution Records in the Castle Market galleries had tipped me off that he'd invited them the next day to his shop (I had a double bus ride into and then back out to the far side of town so I often called in and loitered on the evening leg). There I was, twagging in my school uniform, with a disparate group of fans and along came the three of them, nervously eyeing the door in case some 'real punks' turned up and something kicked off (spittle's probably a bugger to get off mohair?). The owner gave them quite a few freebies and I got the first album and the Modern World single signed. They hung around for maybe an hour (no nasty punk boys turned up!). Never been a mega-fan but Weller has made some interesting twists musically speaking.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Dammnitt Brass, kick a man while he's down why dontcha! I'm just a little too young to've ever got to see my No1 band... and now I learn that you got signed stuff by em!! : )
Punk was never gonna be The Jam's calling and after a couple of years, Weller saw that. That's not to say there's no quality on those first couple of albums (tho I guess I would say that) just no consistency. I actually liked their 'suit and tie' approach to punk in any case; thought it looked a tad cool.
Even at such a young age Weller could write a song with the best of em imo... better than owt post-Jam even. He had a lot more to say back then I suppose. I like some of his solo stuff but I have a way to go before I can get into the larger part.

'The Modern World' is one of many 'too soon' second albums rushed out due to record company pressure, but 'In The City' has enough fire and fury to satisfy anybody who doesn't judge punk by the amount of gob and safety pins on view. :-)

Then I'd best not torture you further by saying that the signed Modern World was for my sister who didn't really give a flying one and has probably long since binned it and that I sold the signed In The City back in the 80s for about £8! I've never seen the point in getting cds or albums defaced!

message 376: by Blastronaut (last edited Feb 09, 2019 06:14AM) (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah Tim, agree with everything ya said there. They were never accepted as bona fide punk and the fact that Woking wasn't in the center of London seemed to go against em too. Reckon it riled Weller a bit... at least until they came of age with 'Cons'.
Modern World is without doubt their weakest effort but has the odd moment of class; Life From A Window was a taste of what was to come and a top quality tune imo. Am quite partial to I Need You too, and tho Standards is a little bit lame, I reckon it comes to life when they play it live on DTNB. Def more 'fillers' than 'killers' on Modern World tho for sure.

Binned? Sacrilege!! : ) Sad fact - I own no signatures by Weller, Foxton or Buckler (let's call em Buck Wellerton for short or, err... The Jam?) so if yer sis ever finds it in a drawer or owt then I'd be interested for sure. Binned!!?? The very idea is so positively... ohhhh... think I need to have a lie down...

Was also thinking of Rollerball. Anyone remember that? I remember bloody loving it but that wuz when I was a kid. Been a long long time since I watched it.

Craig White | 6727 comments no 'escape to victory'? 😁 (worth it. mind you, for pele's superb overhead goal, mibbe less so for stallone's 'least convincing goalkeeper in history' show!)

yeah, the original 'rollerball' film was very influential when you and your mates steal their parent's leather/driving gloves to tool them up with anything capable of piercing skin (rows of drawing pins was the most universal), never actually used i might add! none of us ever had any thought about acquiring actual skates, mind - probably says a lot!
the next time you watch it, you'll find it dated as hell!

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah I was figuring it might not have aged too well. And we did indeed try to play Rollerball as kids but it was a kinda Rollerball/Slap Shot (another film that came on a lot back then) hybrid played on patches of ice in winter - or various other times of year of course. Used to get quite rough but no, nobody ever took a studded fist to the the bonce! In fact we didn't have motorcycles either but that didn't matter.
I fashioned meself some studded gloves outta a pair of black gloves my gran knitted for me and a thin one-row studded belt that was cut up and bits applied to knuckles and fingers of said gloves. Ya couldn't put normal studs onto knitted gloves as they just made larger holes in the knitwear and then fell off, so I glued small pieces (roughly an inch or so) of the belt to em. Reckon I thought it looked the dog's nads back then but thinking back... I probably - scratch probably; definitely, looked a bit of a tw@. : )

Yeah, used to talk to squirrels some 25 years ago. Then stopped boozing (thanks 12 steps programme) and never seen them again! But I can assure squirrels are good listeners.

Have reached Number ten and probably only have a couple of those Suze. Needless to say, common sense is not one of em. looking a tad further in - a good hair or worry free day? Either would be nice. : )
Not sure there's such a thing as an honest politician but that too would be nice.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I think you are being far too modest, Blastro - as I'm pretty sure that you do have quite a lot of things in your Life that no amount of money in the whole wide world could ever buy ;o>

And your Life is always a work in progress until it's finally over, you know? And I've just decided that I'm going to be working on achieving number 17 by going back on taking Statins again - LOL!!!

I stopped taking them a decade ago because I wasn't sure if I really needed them and I absolutely hate taking any Medications unless I really feel like I need to do so - but my Dad's side of the family all have (FH) Familial Hypercholesterolaemia - so I've decided to play safe with my Health and restart taking Statins again ;o>

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Hey, if ya need to be taking em m'dear, then you should be, especially if they're gonna help; maybe give you and/or your folks a little piece of mind too.

Yeah, I do realize how lucky I am, particularly when I look around at other people around my age that did (and most still do) the kinda things I did. Very few - in fact I can only think of one other off top of my head - had somebody come into their life who had the patience and strength to pull em outta the fire, so to speak. Many others are in the gutter or dead. I might have a permanent dark cloud over me head but it don't stop me feeling grateful for what I got, y'know.
Sorry if that sounded preachy or cheesy but it's a stone-cold fact.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Yeah, my Dad had his first of several Heart Attacks when he was 52 and has gone on to have one major and three minor Strokes since then as well. I'm 51 now and feel like I have more than enough serious stuff health-wise to have to cope already without also risking being struck down with anything else - and especially if it could be preventable through the taking of a Medication.

All of the slightly unpleasant Side Effects I thought that I was having last time around of persistent Muscle Pains could actually have well have been down to my Osteoarthritis going through all of it's episodes until it reached Severe End-stage. My current Cholesterol level is up at 7.9 so I'm about to try taking Atorvastatin again (from tonight in fact) and see how I manage to get on with it this time around.

And you really don't need a whole List of Blessings to refer to, Poppet? - because that one extremely precious Blessing that you have in your Life pretty much just about tops them all in my opinion ;o>

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yep, reckon your bang on there. One special one puts the rest to bed.

Thinking about it, my cholesterol levels can't be fantastic. I get annual blood tests to check my thyroid meds are doing their job so one would imagine cholesterol would be one of the things they'd check alongside?

Shit, listen to us... it's like Doctor friggin Phil!! : )
