Craig White | 6727 comments you're right about 's.p.r.', the opening sequence was a terrifying experience in the cinema (whatever the utilised effects were).

you're also right (jings you're on a roll!) about today's strerile cinemas. matches the sterile, and often re-made, dross on the screens. (for the most part)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's all about the atmosphere and entertainment for me, Blastro.

When you go to the Cinema in Marple you queue to go in and get served at the original old Box Office Window and get issued with an old-fashioned Ticket. You have to wait until you are taken up the Stairs across the Landing and down some Stairs again to be shown to your Seat by a young Usherette in full Uniform. And there are three sets of red Curtains that open up to reveal the film on the Screen.

We still buy Soft Drinks and little Ice Cream tubs or Cornettos off the two Usherettes (wearing those Trays that strap around their Necks) at the Intermission after the Trailers have been shown.

It's always a special night out - and it only costs £4.50 to get in ;o>

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah 'Sterile' is as good a word as any for modern cinema. Reckon we agree re remakes Tech, tho once a blue moon, one of em works out. Scarface and The Thing (82) are good examples of a decent (Exceptional?) remake but to be fair neither are recent. Did ya ever watch the more recent remake of Carpenter's The Thing, which was billed as a prequel? For the first half hour or so, I thought it was going ok but the further we got into the film, the more it seemed to rely heavily on CGI and by the end the alien looked - for my money at least - a tad ridiculous; more laughable than freaky! There's a place in today's cinema for computer animation and stuff, but some film-makers get a bit over-reliant on it I reckon.

Looks a decent night out does that Suze and £4.50's around the going rate for anywhere else I think, so can't grumble there. Can't imagine watching the old Rocky films in a small place like that but it looks perfect for an atmospheric-type horror film maybe - the type you're not likely to go to tho. : )
Really good that traditional kinda 'Picture houses' still exist and refuse to bend with the times.

EDIT No2 - The missus informs me that nowadays it's nearer to a tenner than a fiver but she goes more often than me now. I went earlier in the year (or late last year?) and coulda swore it wasn't that much but I'll take the other half's word over my dodgy memory most of the time. That makes your above price even better then Suze!

Martin O' | 2196 comments Our local Odeon charges £10.75 for adult standard seats, add another £2 for premium. Big change from my childhood, Saturday morning pictures for us kids was sixpence downstairs, ninepence upstairs, feature films two bob or half a crown and you got two films, a support then main feature with an interval for purchasing comestibles from the usherette and visiting the toilet. Real value for money! These days with taxis followed usually by a meal and drinks for two of us you're well into three figures for a night out.

Sounds about right Martin. Apparently it's £11.70 for adults at Cineworld near town. I was a tad out with my first guess it seems. Can vaguely remember double features - Cactus Jack comes to mind as something I yawned through as a kid, either cos I wanted me money's worth (yeah right) or was waiting for the next pic.

Them there seats have lovely quaint cushions. They'd be pinched if it was round here I'm afraid; not cos folk would use em for anything or owt, but just because they're not bolted down. Yes, very cultured folk around these parts. : )

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Well, seeing as I'm monologuing...

Top B-Sides; no more than one entry per band (holding back my Jam bias a tad) and in no particular order...

The Writer - UFO (Back Into My Life)
PCP - Manics (Faster)
Pity Poor Alfie - The Jam (Bitterest Pill)
Aneurysm - Nirvana (Smells Like... 12")
Satellite - Sex Pistols (Holidays In The Sun)
Acquiesce - Oasis (Some Might Say)
Police Truck - Dead Kennedys (Holiday In Cambodia)
Runaways - Senseless Things (Primary Instinct)
Here It Comes - Stone Roses (Sally Cinnamon 12")
Havana Affair - Ramones (Blitzkrieg Bop)

Yes Oasis are up there and I like a bit of pop music! Slay me with a barrage of elitism then!!

message 264: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments 10 storming b-sides (that are not versions or dubs, or double a-sides)

1 - 'zyklon b zombie' - throbbing gristle (united)

3 - 'she said' - the cramps (goo goo muck)
4 - 'the fountain is red, the fountain is white' - doll by doll (the palace of love)

6 - ''heart of darkness' - pere ubu (30 seconds over tokyo)
7 - 'i don't care' - ramones (sheena is a punk rocker)

Yeah dude I also thought I'd better discount dance music... I mean in most cases the B-sides are different mixes (usually better, mind) of the A-side track so I wondered if that might be cheating.

message 266: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments you can't cheat if there's no rules, blastro, you could go for your top 10 mixes then!

message 267: by Blastronaut (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Reckon I'll have a go at that then Tech... tho incredibly hard to narrow down to 10. Don't get me wrong, I prefer many original (apart form 3 min long radio edits) versions but at least half the time a better mix can be found. Shall bring forth a list but forgive me if they're 90s (and maybe 00s) tracks rather than more recent stuff.

message 268: by Blastronaut (last edited Nov 02, 2018 10:21AM) (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Actually easier than I expected, this, as more-or-less the first that came into my mind, I jotted down on a bit of paper (yeah I still use scraps of paper whilst everyone else uses their phones) t'other night when watching TV. Whilst there's loads I'll have forgotten for the time being, it must be said that these ten are amongst my top mixes of all time.

All house (well, there's one break-beat track - answers on a postcard as to which one) tunes I'm afraid, and all pre-millennium... but I've tried to keep it to mixes/remixes that sound more different to the original than just the odd tweak like a couple more "Oohs" "Aahs" or hand-claps....

I'll Be Your Friend (Def Instrumental Mix) - Robert Owens
Something About You (Deerstalker Dub Mix) - Mr Roy
Lover (K-Klass Klub Mix) - Joe Roberts
Express Yourself (Original Don Mix) - Family Foundation
No Matter What You Do (Corporation Express Dub Mix) - The Flavour
Do That To Me (Vocal Experience Mix Part 1) - Lisa Marie Experience
What You Need (Luv Dup Mix) - Soft House Company
Jam The Dance (Cool Bass Mix) - Asmo
2 Hype (House Instrumental) - Kid n Play
Better Days (Sasha Remix) - Jimi Polo

Like I said, soooooo many tunes but... if anyone asked me at any time off top of me head, the above would always be among those mentioned.

Doubt any of yous have heard the original 'Lover' by Joe Roberts. Check it out sometime and imagine my horror when I listened to it after purchasing the CD single from 'zon. At that particular time, I realized not that it was the K-Klass mix that I needed, which most definitely not anywhere to be seen on the disc. Said mix is actually a tad rare on CD (not much point getting the vinyl when I got CDJs) and I had to purchase one of the 'Retro' comps (which all three are essential to any 90s clubber so's ok anyhow) to get me hands on it.

Err, sorry for banging on about stuff that has no relevance whatsoever to anyone on here but meself. Is there some kinda illness that compels one to disclose everything to everyone? Have to look that one up.

Maybe a 'Post-Millennium' ten next? Will see.

message 269: by Craig White (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments To tell ya the truth Tech, I really don't know what I'd have done over the years without Discogs (for anyone who's not familiar, it's a marketplace for music of all shapes n sizes) as it's a most excellent place to do one's searching for that hard to find tune or mix. Y'ever use said site yerself?

A quick break from electronica with what I think are cracking cover versions; one entry per-band as usual...

My Way - Sid Vicious (Frank Sinatra and, errr, other folk who wrote it?)
Diamond And Rust - Judas Priest (Joan Baez)
She's Not There - UK Subs (The Zombies)
Suspicious Minds - Fine Young Cannibals (Elvis Presley)
Up Around The Bend - Hanoi Rocks (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
David Watts - The Jam (The Kinks)
Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Nirvana (Lead Belly)
Last Caress - Metallica (The Misfits)
Ain't It Fun - Guns N Roses (Rocket From The Tombs)
I Can't Control Myself - Ramones (The Troggs)

Also, as usual, am pretty sure there's loads I've forgotten but... these'll do for now.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah I guess Discogs is a bit of a treasure trove for most of us lovers of music, regardless of what genre. Between Discogs and Youtube I've discovered the identity of every (might be the odd un that's gone under the radar) track/mix that I loved and 'threw shapes' to back in the day.
To put that into perspective a tad, I collected many many copy/bootleg mixed tapes over the 90s with just the DJs name on em. When ya went out, ya knew some of the tunes but not what they were called; only ones ya knew were the ones that charted and in most cases (not all but most) they were disposable efforts that ya didn't hear in the clubs in any case. It's taken years (since I first came online really) to track down every tune I was after but I've more-or-less concluded the search now and quite enjoyed the seeking. Dunno if any of ya remember the dance thread/s from Zon's MF but sometimes when I tracked down something I was looking for, I'd get a tad excited and post the Youtube link and say how pleased I was!

Discogs! You're the dog's!! : )

Somehow I knew it was bad idea to include a reggae album here! Having checked both the others, they seem to consist of material recorded for Studio One over an extended period (ie assemblages) rather than being an album recorded as an album, which would make Marcus Garvey the first proper album. That's my excuse, anyway.

Don't hit me Liam,,,

Craig White | 6727 comments top 10 highly anticipated debut albums that turned out to be a load of shight,

1 - 'never mind the bollocks, here's the sex pistols'
2 - 'in the flat field' - bauhaus
3 - '999'
4 - 'movement' - new order (more turgid than shight really)
5 - 'fulham fallout' - the lurkers
6 - 'motorhead' (yes, i was actually looking forward to this, at the time!)
7 - 'signing on' - ub40 (see 6)
8 - 'pure mania' - the vibrators

10 - 'boy' - u2

TheFoe | 2637 comments Can't agree with your Bauhaus and Motorhead choice Tech. I was listening to 'In The Flat Field' only last week. At worst it's a bit patchy, but an album that contains 'Dark Entries', Double Dare', ah sod it the first 4 songs on the album are mint, is no way "a load of shight". Not to mention, 'St Vitus Dance', their version of 'Telegram Sam' and the classic 'Terror Couple Killed Colonel'. I mean it did have some stinkers, namely 'Spy In The Cab' and 'Nerves', but the good far out weighs the bad imo. The Motorhead album is all good.

message 284: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments the singles you mention, are good, i have some of them (throw in the brilliant 'passion of lovers', 'kick in the eye' and others), but none were on the original 10 track album, which after having been knocked out by their live act, i found to be a let down - almost completely without their live energy (their version of mr glitter's 'do you wanna touch me' was as inappropriate then as it is now, and belting to boot!)

message 285: by TheFoe (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yeah gotta agree re Motorhead's debut. Not great. Bomber and Overkill were much better but Ace Of Spades really was the dog's. Bloody great album. No filler.
Been exchanging messages with a 'long time no see' cousin on FB* the last couple of week and he tells me he once had a beer with Animal Taylor in a since torn down bar near town. 'It was when he'd broken his neck' he said. I said summat like 'Was there ever a time when his neck WASN'T broken!' : ) Maybe it's just me but when I was a kid, he always seemed to have some kinda collar/brace around his neck. Pretty sure he appeared on Top Of The Pops with one on. Never occurred to me that it mighta been a prop.

message 288: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I still think Motorhead's self-titled album (i.e. the first to be released, rather than the first to be recorded, which was On Parole) was the best one they did. I know Speedy Keen's production was pretty foggy - a Sounds reviewer said it sounded like it had been recorded in a public toilet with the guitarist in a separate cubicle - but the songs were all great. Another track from that session - a cover of the Pink Fairies' City Kids - was the best track they ever recorded. Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades each included some killer tracks but also included far too much filler. (All the Aces, anyone? Or Jailbait?) And, of course, none of them had Iron Horse/Born to Lose.

message 289: by Blastronaut (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Jailbait's a cracking track!! As for All The Aces... not the greatest but don't think it's on Ace Of Spades. Not on my old vinyl edition in any case.
The weakest track on AOS is imo, Fire Fire, and it's still listenable. Only track that i reckon could be regarded as filler.

We say, you lied about this, he says no i didn't it wasn't me, we say here's the proof, he says you're all liars with an agenda against America. And because rolling news is now a thing, what used to take weeks or months to build up and fallout is suddenly pushed aside in 5 minutes as the next calamity occurs, A week with Supernanny and we'd have a half way decent chance of him becoming a sub-below normal adult.
