So I had a few details wrong, but it has been over 25 years since I read it and I have read soooo many books in that time. At least it was enough for someone to know what book I was thinking of.
I read a book when I was between 10 & maybe 14, so I would have read it some time between 1991-1995, but the book would have been written before that (obviously). It was a random book my grandma found for me, but I am not sure where she got it. If I remember right, it was a paperback with a soft pink and off-white cover with a black & white sketch on the front. I do not remember the title or author or any character names. The story seemed to be written/set in current times.
All I remember about the story was that the girl was probably between 12-16, was an artist, wanted some really nice colored pencils, possibly for her birthday, and didn't have many friends. She drew some beautiful gossamer fairy/dragonfly type wings in her sketch book with her new colored pencils and then, after something happened(do not remember), they appeared on her back. I think she fell asleep somewhere dusty, and when she woke up she had the wings. They were invisible to everyone else, but she could see them and she could fly. The wings were such that she could feel them and they could cause her pain and she had to cut slits in her clothes for the wings to fit through so they wouldn't be mashed up against her back and causing pain. I seem to remember her worrying about her mom finding her clothes cut up and trying to explain, since the wings were invisible.
SPOILERS
At some point in the story, something happens and the wings disappear and she tries desperately to get them back, but I cannot remember how the book ended.
Notes (details fuzzy):
She MAY have just moved somewhere (to the town the story was set in) with her mom just before the story, which would explain why she didn't have friends.
She MAY have had a younger brother who could see her wings.
She MAY have been in a dance class, possibly ballet.
She MAY have been an avid reader.
She MAY have met a boy/made a friend that she told about her wings and demonstrated her ability to fly with them.
She MAY have saved someone from an accident of some kind bc she was able to fly.
She MAY have had issues after the incident bc of the flying with invisible wings.
That is all I can remember at this time. I will update if I remember anything more.
