Read in the 90's. The story is from a young girls' perspective. A family comes to stay at her home and they keep creating reasons why they can't leave. Eventually taking over the home and lives of the family.
I remember the guest mother sprains her ankle hiking up a hill nearby the house and so they have to stay longer, but it's all a ruse when the girl spots her ankle under her skirt and it looks fine.
The girls parents become exhausted from looking after the guests and the stress. They end up being kicked out of their own home and living in the barn on the property.
