Okay! I think *technically* I could consider myself done!3 Books:
Rock Critic Law: 101 Unbreakable Rules for Writing Badly About Music
All Summer Long
Goldie Vance #4
And I am also still reading Jessica Hopper's The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic - the pieces in this book are SO GOOD. and I love Hopper's delivery in these articles.
2 CDs:
As mentioned much earlier I adjusted this for my own habits and went with albums that I might listen to here and there but haven't really spent time with and wanted to really give them a chance.
The first album was Nothing Feels Natural by Priests. I loved their first album (as I mentioned in a previous post) but their followup didn't quite grab me the same way. Over the course of this month, I've listened to the album a few times, from beginning to end, and am realizing that while it's definitely *not* Bodies and Control and Money and Power, that's okay! And there are really great tracks (including one about a friend wanting to start a band called burger king, and pursue your dream, burger king!)
The second album was by a musician featured on NPR's SXSW coverage, Haley Heynderickx. I happened to be at Columbus Library one night and noted we had her album "I Need to Start a Garden" in stock, so I checked it out. And I've been listening to it and spending time with the liner notes, totally getting lost in the music/lyrics, and it's a very lovely, smart album. While "oom sha la la" will always be my favorite song, I found a few other really great tracks. ♥
OH! I don't know if folks here still listen to vinyl, but at the end of the month, Randy's Record Shop is doing their $2 record sale. I missed it the last couple of times, but I hear it's a pretty epic sale!
Debbie wrote: "Does Randy's buy vinyl? Where is the shop located? Thanks" They do! They suggest calling them at 801-532-4413 (here's there link for more info! http://www.randysrecords.com/sell-you... ) They are located downtown 157 E 900 S.
I finished my second book
It was a really good book about music in the concentration camps. We have been traveling and I listened to some of my favorite CD's by the Piano Guys
My second album is also a CD I checked out from the library, Megadeth Greatest Hits Back to the Start.
I read "Mister and Lady Day", thanks to a recommendation from this thread; I've also listened to South Pacific and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Gold album. (Actually, I have most of the songs on that one on other CDs as well, so I'm giving that away to anyone who wants it. Feel free to reply to this and I'll get it to you.)
I listened to the Hamilton Soundtrack and the Symphonic Star Trek Soundtrack. Super fun times for me!
Hey guys!
As a reminder the Goodreads Reading Challenge goes through August, BUT the Salt Lake County Library Summer Reading Program (where you can earn a book, a ticket to the Natural History Museum and an entry into a prize drawing) ends on July 31.
Don't forget, that by signing up for the Summer Reading Program you can get a fine waiver for up to five dollars on pre-existing fines.
I'm also really excited by all the recommendations. Keep it up everyone!

I read The Queen and the Cure by Amy Harmon. Kjell must find the music within anyone he tries to heal. Quite a fun fantasy read from a local author. It is the sequel to The Bird and the Sword. I also read Mary Poppins. I don't remember reading as a child, although I have seen
the musical. I enjoyed it, but don't see myself reading the entire series.
My third book was an impulse buy at Costco last week: We are the Dinosaurs. My toddler son loves the song, so we had to read it in the store. Of course, he said, "Read it again!" so I bought it. He insists on having it read to him every night. It really is a cute book.
My music selections for the challenge are toddler related. We listen to a toddler station through Amazon Music in the car regularly. Favorite artists are Laurie Berkner, Casper Babypants, Lisa Loeb and Blippi. I sing along and he begs for "Another one!" and "Another one!" and tries to sing along. He knows most of the words to Blippi's "Garbage Truck," as well as "Pop! Goes the Weasel," and "The Wheels on the Bus."
My mom just bought the We are the Dinosaurs book at Costco too! I asked her if she was going to read it or sing it to my niece and she had no idea it was a song. I immediately pulled it up for her to listen to, lol.
My last book was Moon Over Soho. The blurb on the cover is "Magic and murder to a jazz beat". It's the 2nd in a series. I probably wouldn't have picked it up but for this challenge. I am enjoying the series though.
I finished the Summer Reading Challenge! The Sound of Music story : how a beguiling young novice, a handsome Austrian captain, and ten singing Von Trapp children inspired the most beloved film of all time by Tom Santopietro
Bad singer : the surprising science of tone deafness and how we hear music by Tim Falconer
Lives of the musicians : good times, bad times (and what the neighbors thought) written by Kathleen Krull ; illustrated by Kathryn Hewitt
The sound of music [sound recording] : original Broadway cast
Live! [sound recording] : Piano Guys
Don't forget, the Goodreads Reading Challenge goes until August 31, so if you've finished, but have listened to other cool albums or have read other fun books, feel free to post so other participants can get good ideas.
Also, if you're doing the Salt Lake County Library Summer Reading program everything is due TODAY!

It looks like I'm having a picture book kind of summer--my 2nd book for the challenge is Deborah Hopinson's "Home on the Range: John A. Lomax and His Cowboy Songs." It made me miss my dad's road trip music!
If you're having fun with the picture books, I'm going to recommend Let's Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy by Jan Thomas. There's a link on her website to the song.
Have fun!
Have fun!
I read my third book. I read Moonlight on the Magic Flute. I am now finished. This was a fun challenge.
We read a picture book called Play This Book, by Jessica Young. My toddler loved it so much, we used up all the renewals!
So far I've read Adelaide Hermann Queen of Magic edited by Margaret B Steele which discusses the orchestral accompaniment the Hermanns would use for performances. In fact, Adelaide was apparently one of the first to use more extensive music and not speak at all. I've also read (several times) Nose to Toes, You Are Yummy! by Tim Harrington, a picture book (my 4-year-old picked as her free book for the summer reading) that is also a song and includes dance moves at the end. (My 4-year-old loves it... I'm less of a fan but I'm not the intended audience, lol.)
Good job people. I love that Sarah saw some live shows that's awesome! So many good books to look up you guys!
One more week you guys! Get those music themed books and albums (or concerts) recorded on here so we can see it!
I read The Encyclopedia of Music and played all of Les Misérables. Piano/Vocal Selections on piano. I listened to a bunch of albums, including Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov, several Ed Van Fleet albums, and some Broadway: Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables.
Wow! It's surprising to know the September Challenge will soon be identified and we will have a new (school) year of reading challenges.

I usually listen to audiobooks in the car, but that’s what I listen to at home. I drove to California and back a week ago, and that’s when I did my Broadway marathon.
I love listening to Broadway in the car. Great for singing out loud! Don't forget if you participated in the Summer Reading Program at a branch that you have access to a fine waiver for up to $5 on pre-existing fines that expires on Friday, August 31.
Everyone make sure you post that you finished so I get you in the drawing for summer!

I finished my third book of the challenge. I reread Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. For music, my daughter and I listen to lots of musical soundtracks. We've been listening to "Come From Away" in prep for seeing the show in Nov. I also listened to my favorite show on CD, "In The Heights". I don't know if live music/concerts or musicals count, but we also went to The Who's "Tommy" in Park City, in July. My husband and I also went to see Puddles Pity Party in June, which was excellent, unusual fun. Great challenge!
I'm not going to get finished with the summer challenge (can't do everything and this fell through the cracks). However, congrats to those who have/will. P.S. I took a peek at September's challenge. Sounds right up my alley.
Yay--I just made it! For my last book I read Marilyn Singer's "Feel the Beat: Dance Poems that Zing from Salsa to Swing", which was fun to read, had fabulous illustrations, and gave fascinating information in the back about the dances.
Becky is our prize drawing winner for Summer 2018's reading challenge. She read Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, love is a mixtape and Eleanor & Park. She also listened to Come from Away and In the Heights.
Congratulations Becky!

This was a fun challenge because I rarely listen to music except when I'm in the car and forgot my audio book. I don't know when was the last time I listened to a full album. I think, though it was over a year ago when, on rare occasion, I went into the office on a Saturday to get some work done in quiet (no one calling, no one stopping by except perhaps a co-worker). There I listened to Wagner's full Ring Cycle over the course of several months.
