From Sonia's post yesterday:

"Once a chaser is knocked out, it stays out, till she's defended, or a chain of 1 or 2 is made. If you want to finish first chain, you need to wait for your beater to do the defense, otherwise the chain is void. "

If I'm interpreting correctly, a successful defense allows the chain to stay in play.
