I've done the same thing, I find out about it in weird ways.....I was with a colleague from Argentina, buying her a sweatshirt in Harvard Square. A nearby couple overheard us speaking Spanish, and the guy (who was from El Salvador) asked me if I was from Mendoza. Not just Argentina, mind you. Specifically Mendoza. Weird thing was, I had spent a month there and a few weeks here and there, and have a friend here that I hang with. While my Spanish normally isn't remotely South American, it must have been because I was with this colleague, who's also from the north. It was just so weird that he pinpointed the city I'd been to. In fun, I've done other accents when speaking Spanish, but only when the topic comes up, like you say, Parker, so people know you're not poking fun.
