Novel set in 18th century that is about a guy traveling by boat between Europe and South America i believe

I believe he was traveling from England. I cant remember much but i believe it was a thriller type book and a mystery. I guess steampunk would be a word that comes to mind. I only ever read the description last year. When i went to buy it at the bookstore it was sold out.
