I agree, Joy. I think all Allende's books are tagged M.R. because she's so well known for it. But some of her books don't fit at all. This one and Portrait in Sepia are part of the The House of the Spirits trilogy, but don't really contain any magical realism that I remember. (H O T S definitely fits, however)

Me too! So glad to see the end of the angry family.

It's really beautiful ... and PERFECT for the tag!

If you build it they will come. 40 Good Readers tagged it magical realism. It's been on my kindle forever. I loved the movie."
Jgrace, Yes, in my opinion Shoeless Joe is a great example of magical realism. I read it a long time ago, but remember really liking it. By the way, the Kindle version of this book is currently on sale for 1.99 on Amazon.

Yeah, this is my approach too. I plan to read at least something that actually is magical realism to go with the spirit of stretching my reading a little, and then if other spec fic stuff I was already planning to read pops up, then I'll read some of those too.

YYYEEESSS!!!! I will definitely be looking out for your review.
Remember my tip: take notes on the characters on the family tree in the beginning of the book. Many of the characters have the same name (very common in that culture) and if you can just jot down a couple of phrases on each to keep them straight and reference later, I think it helps a lot.

I just got Circe on audio from the library yesterday!
And, as always happens to me, I got in like 4 audiobooks all at once. *sigh* Luckily, I will be spending some extra time in the car over the next week!

I want to listen to Circe and I was thinking of using an audible credit on it. But do you think it might be called magical realism? I guess almost anything could be. The definition seems to stretch in a lot of directions.

I personally will not be counting Circe as magical realism, unless I get into it and am very surprised! The book blurb does not indicate what I would consider magical realism for my personal definition.
Gonna read the book anyway though ;)
