She smiled, "Thanks Kaleigh."
We all headed back to the barracks after that, Eva actually left Basil's side for a moment, chatting with Iris. Which was annoyingly sweet.
"I can't wait till everyone sees!" Eva says bursting with sincere excitement.
"Me too!" admitted Iris feigning modesty, I could so see Eva was like her idol.
"This is going to make for some killer pranks!" squealed Eva. Everyone groaned, apparently Eva took pranking to the next level. For the next few moments they brainstormed pranks. Some of them were actually funny, not even remotely mean. I chimed in occasionally and Eva lighted up as if I had revealed the next biggest thing in the universe. In the end, we had several planned ideas that we would get together to do, but then we had to part ways. Before I left though, I could hear Eva shouting, "Hey! Pollux! You owe me AND your sister a coin every time we win Crindle!" then there was a few audible groans. I stifled a laugh.

"Yeah. Pretty cool huh? Well, goodnight I guess." and she slipped into the other room.

"Duh!" said Astar, "He and your sis should be back this evening, until then, we're going to be training."

"Fine." I mumbled. Drenched, and freezing I got myself a towel.

I quickly got dressed, and made way to the training area, which looked similar to an arena.

"How exciting." I said sarcastically.
"I'm glad you think so. Lainey's going to be teaching this one though." Astar told me.
"Lainey?"
"Yeah. Her power is telekinesis. You know - to move objects, which requires a lot of focus. Come here." She led me to this door which opened to a small room filled with mats, beads, and incense. Like something out of a yoga magazine. The whole place was alighted with candles, and an eighteen year old sat, with her legs cross-crossed, reminding me of a female Yoda.

Suddenly my bubble popped.
"Pppaaaayy aatttennntionnn Kaaallleeeighh."
"Right sorry." I shut my eyes, and once again I felt lifted from bellow I could hear Lainey instructing Melody, then she said to all of us:
"Nnnooow, thiiiiinkkk offff thiiinnngggsss thaaaattt mmmmaaakke yyyooou happpppyyy."
I thought of home. Home. Home made me feel happy. At home I felt loved. Normal. I mean sure I'm stuck with dresses, but...
"Sssssteeaaadddy Kaaaallleeighh, gooooddd. Assssstaaarrr -keeeepppp pposssturre. Nnnooww immmaaaagiinne yooouuurrrr fllllyyyinnngg."

"Hhhhhaaapppyyyy thooooughttts!" Sang Lainey.
Right. Happy thoughts. I got this. I like ice cream. Rocky-road ice-cream. I like chocolate. Chocolate cherries. Yummy. I like Megan. Megan is my little sister. She's cool. Like Eva. But, Eva likes Basil. And everyone likes Eva.
"Ccaaarrrefulll Kaaaleeeiighh!" warned Lainey.
Get back on track Kal. You like horses. Chestnut horses. And hikes. And picnics. Picnics with Andrew. And hiking with Dylan. But, they're dead. So it won't be fun anymore. FOCUS! You like scrambled eggs over jellied toast. You like jewelry. And really nice rings. Like the Rowanoak Ring. STOP IT! Bad thoughts! Ummmm.... Let's see here.. What else do so like? What else do I like?!

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnndddddd... likkkee a fffeeeaaatheeer ffflloooat ddownnn..."
I felt ground underneath me and I let out a sigh of relief. That was hard.
"Gggrrreeaaattt joooobbb evvveeerrryyyonnne. Sssseeee yyyooouuu tooomorrow."

I followed her outside to where Pollux, and a very few others were standing. One of them was actually Melody. Pollux smiled widely when he saw me. "Ready to get crushed?" He asked and punched his palm.
"No." I said.
Pollux, and the rest laughed.
"On the slight percentage that you do though," said Pollux, "we have Winna to help us today since Lainey's occupied." He said motioning to a small girl, who eyed Pollux wearily.

"Lift it." He said
"I can't!" I said.
"Then WORK on it." and then he walked off.

I heard Winna snicker behind me. I wasn't going to give up. I heaved. It barely came off, my muscles strained, my elbows locked. I dropped it. Again. Heave. Barely. Down. Heave. Barely. Down. Heave. Barely. Down...
It grew until it hit six inches off the ground and Pollux told everyone to stop for some water, then we continued.

A one on one. A battle of who would win all. Up, down. Up, down. Break! Water. Up, down. Up, down.
"OK, Kaleigh your done!" called Pollux, I dropped the weight, and sat down.
"Good job!" Said Astar, equally drenched, "You kicked some major weight-butt today!"
Even tired, and exhausted, I have a weak laugh. On the way out my arms wouldn't stop trembling.

It took me a bit to understand that 'ripe' was a code word for you-need-deodorant. Astar smiled,
"Just got done with Pollux. Do you take lessons with him?" Asked Astar.
"Yeah," Eva said, "On Wednesdays. He's my personal work-out trainer, without him my arm strength would be awful." she waved at Pollux as he walked by and he shouted,
"I've got some killer new stretches for yeh tomorrow Eve! You're going to flip when you see them!"
"Yeah, yeah!" she said waving him away, "Now where were we?"

"Nice try Kaleigh," said Eva, "but try this. Instead of flicking your wrist, like I do, do it like your throwing something. Don't squint and you won't miss. Keep your posture straight, and no fish arms."
Surprisingly, I liked Evangelica's class. She actually made a semi-cool teacher, and was more do-it-yourself and not let-me-show-you. At the end of the day, I made some really good progress.
"So Kaleigh," said Eva after the tenth throw, "don't twist your body when you do it. Body straight. Think of a square. You're not in the corner, but the middle. So center yourself, good, now try it."
I threw. I missed. She totally did that to mess me up.
"Better. Now, the reason I want you to do that is because I don't want you to be so used to that stance. Say your riding a horse. Where you move, the horse moves. If you threw while twisting your horse would throw off your aim. Straight body, straight horse. Again."

It went on like this for a while until Eva gave us charge to leave.
"Alright, so let's go take a shower." Said Astar when we were a ways off.
"Seriously? No more training?" I asked.
"Well, I'm pretty sure your sister won't want a sweaty embrace so yeah. Showers all around."
Right. Megan would be back.

Megan wore a T-shirt with a green slinky, and riding pants. Her hair pulled up in a pony-tail with a red hair piece, her bangs held up by a few multi-colored berets. Megan was never really formal. Despite our differences, I never was more happier to see a member of my family. I hugged her.
Megan took it, "Where the heck were you?!" was the first thing out of my sister's mouth, "Mom freaked out, Andrew's dad threatened a lawsuit, Dylan's old mom nearly had a heart attack!"
I hugged her tighter, "I'm sorry,"
"Yeah, well, tell that to your boyfriends parents will you? I swear mom almost fainted when Basil told her about them. Gosh, I can't tell you how many interviews I've had."

"Lucky. I mean, besides loosing your friends of course, but I mean LUCK-Y. I spent a week in confined spaces stuck with Ms. Kelb - you know, my tutor - learning math while YOU met the coolest people on earth!" she fell on my bed.
"Wow. Megan Jade Rowanoak is finally amazed." I snorted, half amazed myself.
Megan smiled, "Yeah, well, I'm starved. Do you have anything to eat around here?"
Astar nodded, "Yep. Just follow me."

"So... mom's been worried lately?"
"Phsaw Kaleigh," she snorted, "You're not invisible." she dug into her soup. Somehow I didn't find that remotely funny knowing that Jesse was invisible. "Anyway, to answer your question," she continued rolling her eyes, "yeah. Mom sent out like palace guards and everything. I couldn't step a foot outside without ten dudes hovering over me. They couldn't even take a joke! Do you know how depressing that is?"
That was Megan. So optimistic.
"Funny thing was, they all thought I knew where you were," said Megan musing, "but... somehow... I kinda did."
A lump caught into my throat, "How?"
Megan looked deep in thought, "Don't know," she stirred her soup, "I mean like - I didn't know WHERE you were, but I knew you were alive. I didn't even doubt it. So every time anyone interrogated me and asked what would happen if you were dead, my answer was always 'Oh don't worry peeps. She's alive.' They thought I was crazy. But, I mean I'm a Rowanoak! Our whole family is crazy! Between you! Gee! And me? A Moonshadow?"
"You knew what a Moonshadow was?" I asked.
She looked at me like I was crazy, "Do you EVER go to the library?" she asked, "But, yeah. I always read when I'm bored, or when mom's busy, or well - you won't answer your door."
I cringed. I did that sometimes.
"Sometimes, when no one listens to me," Megan said somberly, "books are the only way to get my thoughts out. Sure, our library doesn't have the latest, greatest hits, but it has history. People who were ACTUALLY real. Not some Harry Potter, or Percy J., but people who went through what I was going through. I read about Moonshadows a few months back, they're pretty cool. They have secret abilities, and special guards. I dreamt of being one, and I think I actually, somehow, felt connected to all of that stuff."
I was speechless as she dug back into her soup.

Iris squealed. Or Pollux 2 squealed. Or at least I think it was Pollux 2.
"Is she dead?"
"Sorry, she's kinda... knew to this whole deal." I said lamely.
Iris switched into herself, a frown on her face, "Oh."
I slapped her gently across the cheeks, "Megan."
Her eyes hazily fell open, "I just had this bizarre dream Kali. So there was this little girl, and she turned into some sort of muscle man - am I going crazy?"
"NOPE." said Iris popping around my other shoulder, "At least not yet anyway, but don't pass out OK? I like you."
Megan gave a weak laugh, "I like you too kid," she sat up, and paused when she saw Pollux. They stared at each other.

"Pollux!" cried Iris.
He turned, "Right, sorry Iris."
They turned to leave.
"My name is Megan by the way!" my sister called.
Pollux stopped and turned, "I'm Pollux."
"I know." Was her smart reply.
"Polly!" exclaimed Iris, and then they headed out. Once they were gone I grinned at Megan,
"I think he likes you."

Astar got up.
"And yes you may take me to my room, I think I'm about to pass out!"

"Hello princess, I came to see if your sister Princess Jade is attending you." Was his response.
"Jade?" I repeated, a bit shocked he would refer her to her middle name.
"Of course. Every Moonshadow is refered to her jeweled name, be it Peridot, Tourmaline, or Gaspeite, among a few others." he answered simply. So he would've refered to me as Emerald if I had been the Moonshadow? Such a strange custom. But, Megan had asked Pollux to call her by her first name. Would he too, change it to Jade the way Basil - and surely Zinnia, and Astar would?
"Never mind," said Basil breaking my thoughts, "I'm sure she's resting, rightly so, she'll have a long day of training with Zinnia and I."

Where do I begin with her?
You can hardly keep her off the dance floor. I can't tell you how many times I've seen her do the swing, the salsa, foxtrot, quickstep, cha-cha, Rumba, Mamba, jive, folk, and break dance, amongst a few others. I'm surprised she hasn't entered Dancing With the Stars yet, but there's always something that's strange about sisters.

A dress.
What on earth was I going to wear?
"I... don't know..."
Iris looked deep in thought, "Perhaps you could get one from Eva."
"Eva?"
"Yeah. She makes dresses occasionally, maybe you could ask her."
Right. Eva. Angel, Crindle-master, gambler, and... seamstress. Huh. Never saw the last one coming.
"Thanks Iris, but I'm not sure she'll be able to make me a dress that fast."
"Of course not!" the girl snorted, "She uses her magic of course!"
Okay. So she's an angel, Crindle-master, gambler, and magical seamstress. Huh.
"But how does she have magic?" I asked confused.
Iris shrugs, "Don't know, I guess that's just one of her Gifts. Anyway, see you later!" and then she skipped away. And as much as I hated charity from Eva, I wasn't going to be the only girl wearing cargo pants at a ball. So, I made my way to the barracks.
(PS - I was thinking, maybe Eva could be one of the Dark Ones -explanation for magic/wings? I mean, like not a traitor or anything, but could that be her origins for just some twist?)

"Oh! Kaleigh! I didn't expect to see you here."
"Hi... Eva. I was wondering if you could umm... make me a dress," this was so awkward, "I don't have any to wear."
Eva looked like I had something horrifying. "Of course! Come inside won't you?"
Her dress sashayed as she walked, her whole room was actually quite grand. Simple, but pretty.
"So, what dress do you want?" asked Eva getting out a few things from a black chest shoved in the corner. I stood there awkwardly. How did I not have an idea of what dress I wanted? When I didn't respond, Eva laughed. "That's alright, I'm sure I can figure it out. I'm guessing you want a tight bodice, and a low skirt?"
I nodded.
"Do you want it poofy, or do you want it with more flow?" she asked.
"I guess a flow." I said carefully.
"Okay, great. Now, we have the idea of fabric our colors might be more limited. I have yellow, pastel blue, pink, gold, and white."
Now THAT took me some time. Not yellow, and not pink. They're not my colors. And I don't want white. So that would leave blue and gold. I looked at the materials Eva set out. The blue was soft, and clean. But, the gold was shimmery with different golden hues.

The front was gold, and low-cut. As for the skirt it was long, the blue underneath with a sort of gold-transparent material over. There was also gold gloves out of the same material that didn't itch when I put them on, and light-blue flats.
"It's amazing!" I said.
Eva grinned, "I've always had a gift for fashion, but try it on in case I need to alter it a bit more."
Eva left the room while I changed, and came back in. There was little alterations to be made. She made the bodice tighter, so I looked thinner in frame, and cut off a bit underneath. All of course, with her magic.
"Does the Moonshadow have a dress?" asked Eva curiously.
"No, I don't think so." was my answer giving the dress a bit of a twirl.
"Well, I would be happy to make one. In fact, might I?"
"Sure," I said, "But, if your too busy-"
"Nonsense," smiled Eva, "I'd be happy to help. Do you think she'd mind if I pulled up a bit of green?"
I shook my head and watched as she picked out a beautiful shade of well - jade green, and a coarse silver. The edges of the dress's front was silver, and so was the material that wrapped around a small waist. The skirt however, was the jade green, ruffled like some sort of pageant dress. And the rest of the bodice that was outlined in silver, had the same jaded green. It also came with soft green flats, and green gloves

I hesitated. "Okay."
"And while I'm at it might as well send the dresses." she said and then snapped her fingers. Megan's dress vanished, and also a large package on a vanity. But, I didn't have time to think. She plopped me on her bed and began to separate strands and braiding. After that she wrapped it around the side of my head, and pinned it to my head.
"There," she sighed, "perfect, and with five minutes to spare."
"But, what about your hair?" I asked.
Her eyes widened, "I nearly forgot," and with that she began twisting her own hair into a loose French braid. "There, let's go."

"KALEIGH!" she called, "You look fabulous!"
Me? Fabulous? She should see herself! She looked like some sort of pageantry princess. Miss America or something.
"Oh thanks you too." I said modestly.
Megan gave a self-satisfied smirk, "I know. That Eva is REALLY good. I think this is the first dress I actually 'like', she was the one who came in with you right?"
"Yeah."
"She looks REALLY cool. So is she and Basil like a 'thing'?"
"Why?" I asked getting slightly annoyed.
Megan shrugged, "Because it looks like they're dates," she gestured over to where Eva was. Dancing with Basil. I felt my cheeks flame. Megan's grin broadened, "Ohhhh..."
"Be quiet."
Megan smiled brightened, "I knew there was something, but I didn't dare guess."

I shook my head. At least I don't think he did. If so, that would be... weird.
"I think you missed a chance to dance though." I said.
Megan looked depressed as she looked around the room, "Really? Darn."
And instead of cueing the entrance of Pollux, Eddie swooped in out of no where. Amazingly his claws had detracted so they looked like human hands. He made an arm flourish, and bowed. "Did someone say dancing?" he flashed white teeth, he looked like one of those young princes you see in the movies. "May I assist the Moonshadow in gracing the floor?"
Megan smiled, "Of course, but I'm afraid I don't know your name at all."
"Edward Antony, at your service."
Talk about smooth. In the end, he won the battle, and ended up making a smashing dance duo.

"Hi Iris." I said straining to keep boredom out of my tone.
"How come your not joining in all the fun?" the girl asked.
I looked at all the dancers, "Well, I don't have a partner," and I gestured to the food table, "And I'm not exactly hungry."
Iris grinned, "Well, I can't really cure your hunger problems, but it appears that you and Pollux are in the same boat."
"Boat?" I repeated blinking.
"Well, yeah. He's been waiting for Megan-Jade to dance with him, but she's too occupied with Eddie." she pointed to my little sister hand in hand with Scissorhands (or ex-Scissorhands now), doing a slow waltz. Then she pointed towards Pollux in a chair by the corner sipping a pineapple beverage. He glared steely-eyed at Eddie. Or should I say 'Edward Antony'.
I had to admit, they have been dancing for at least ten minutes. But, apparently, Megan didn't care about common courtesy, only sticking with Eddie. And they seemed quite engaged about some sort of subject. Megan gave a laugh at something Eddie said, and Pollux practically crushed the glass in his hand.
I excused myself from Iris, and went over. "Everything okay?" I asked.
He seemed to cool down when he saw me, "Nah, not really. Balls aren't really my thing. I'm a horrible dancer."
I turned this to my advantage, "You? Muscle-man-Pollux? Horrible dancer? Well, I think I can be the judge of that. Might I dance with you?"
In truth, I wasn't a very good dancer either, but, I figured, sometimes you just have to let loose once in a while. Plus, I had nothing better to do.
"But, isn't the guy supposed to ask the girl to dance?" chuckled Pollux.
I laughed, "Not this time apparently."

The cool DJ put the light to a more brighter setting, and then set on the music, picking up the microphone, "Now let's have some fun!" he shouted.
"Oh come on Darren!" shouted Eva, "We girls can't do it in these dresses!"
There was some laughter.
The DJ only rolled his eyes and telling us what to do. We lined up, girls on one side, and boys on the other. I faced Pollux, and we were a few people away from Megan and Eddie. Then, with the DJ's instructions, we began looping arm in arm with each other throughout the room.

"Now that wasn't too hard Eva was it?" asked the DJ through the mic.
Hand-in-hand with Basil, and panting she said, "Nah, but I think I'm a bit whoosy." Everyone chuckled, but then it ended upruptly.
She put one hand on her head, and suddenly went sheet white. Iris screamed. She fell and Basil steadied her. Astar ran over, her dress was bright, with multicolored fabrics and textures that somehow matched, and pattern-styled hair. "Basil get some water," she said as she turned her over. He blinked, and then ran to the table. Astar, meanwhile began loosening the corset. It wasn't tight at all it appeared, Eva was that thin, and Astar hurried to tie the strings to the loosest setting anyway. She set her up when Basil brought the water, but water streamed down the sides of her mouth as if she wouldn't take it.
"Get her to the infirmary," said Astar.
Basil hesitated, but reached down, and hoisted her up carefully. Astar followed him.
"Don't worry everybody!" Shouted Astar as they left, "Resume the party!"
But, in some strange way, when Eva left ill - she took the party with her.

It sounded trembling and distressed, "I'm not one of them," she said softly, "You have to believe me, but promise you won't tell."
I was paralyzed.
Suddenly her voice cried out in my head crying in anguish, "Say you won't Kaleigh!" she begged, "Say you won't!"
She wasn't- she couldn't!
"Please Kaleigh! Mock me of my birth! Torture me like they do! Just don't tell!" she was near hysterics by now, "I'm scared of them Kaleigh! I thought I got rid of them! But, I can't! They'll always find me! You might've been told I was abandoned! That I crippled my wing because of a fall or injury! They were all wrong! I've seen things that would give you nightmares, so I ran Kaleigh! And they came back to kill me - and they got as far to crippling my wing when Basil came! And I can hear them! They mock and taunt! And one came at the ball! I saw him! And he came to kill the Moonshadow! And I was so frightened that I fainted - and now he's come back!"
"He wants to kill Megan?" I asked alarm.
"They all do." Was her eery reply, "And I can keep them away from your sister if you keep my secret. And I swear I can Kaleigh. I swear."
"Then I swear too."

I can just imagine the tabloids, and I was already preparing myself for a devoted speech to what my story would be. So far, it was that Andrew, Dylan, and I went camping. Believable. And that we came in contact with some rabid dog and that the boys protected me as I made an escape. A bit fibby, but it could happen. The rest of it I was still debating on.

"Whatever you say chief."
I have to admit, Megan was faring better than I thought. She took a long draught of water from her bottle and then slapped me playfully on the arm,
"Good job Kals." she said.
That was Megan's nickname for me now.
"Thanks Jade. You too."
Megan frowned, "I don't see why everyone's calling me that now. I mean - it's my middle name. Megan, is my given name."

I gotta watch myself.
We were directed to a little room in a building separate from the barracks. It was apparently the place Basil held his classes and shared his tutelage. I was noticeably self-conscious.

She shrugged, "If you want I can smear tomato sauce on your cheeks to cover the blushing."
Yeah... no.
"Actually, I think I'm feeling better." I said quickly.

He doesn't have magic he's just telepathic. I would suppose he'd do something like telepathy, or teach about assorted threats, or teach mental defense vs physical defense)

Megan rolls her eyes, "In essence she's saying it's cool with her."

"Mental defense," was his answer, "It's not exactly very applicable to Princess Kaleigh, but it will be a very useful advantage as the Moonshadow. There are other wordly beings who would try to glean information from you."
Megan was impressed, "Cool. So like from vampires?"
"Vampires, are non-existent. Horrible creatures, cannabilistic, with no feelings." Was his response.
"Wow. Are ghost's real too then?"
I felt like I was about to die, but Basil smiled.
"Actually yes, but if it was vengeful it would take over you. Thankfully however, they prefer to stay in their dark underworld brooding."

"Are you kidding?! I had to grab her with my own two hands," he held them out to the others, "And that's not easy! The girl bit me!" he turned one over. Five teeth imprints were revealed, it was pink around, but it didn't draw any blood.
"Anyway," resumed Eddie, "I think she went to Lainey early for some more relaxation."
"Good enough," Basil sighed wearily, "Let's begin shall we?"
