kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I will either eventually finish Monte Cristo before the challenge ends or pick another book as I'm slated for 3 buddy reads that are over 901 pages anyway.

I should be back to my reading groove this week. I've finally unpacked!

Sure thing, Natasha! :-)

That is a lot of doorstop reads you have coming up, Kathleen!

On another note: if any of you see a combination where you think you can find a different and much better suited book/combinatino - give a shout and we can switch things around. :-)

message 1003: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments If you would prefer to use something else for history of magic, I noticed most of the books have been used for spells or classes at this point, and if you pick 7 titles I'm willing to try writing something with those titles. It would be a fun challenge. Or at least I think it would be fun.

message 1004: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 2378 comments I will finish Winter this month.... I need to finish Cress first. I will get it done, I promise. For both I've decided to read a few chapters a day, that way they won't hold up my other reading....

Annalisa - for my part, any books used for spells are negotiable ;-) They weren't marked, so I didn't realize.

So glad about Natasha reading for a pig!!! I just couldn't resist that combo!

For empty hand to go with the fireball, what about this one? I think I used it for spells but I'm sure I can replace it.
Aphrodite's Kiss (Superhero Central #1) by Julie Kenner

Levitation:
If we can find a cover with another necklace on it that is sitting on something or on someone, this one looks like it is floating. For that matter, so do the couple if we can find a couple clearly standing or anchored to something...
Unbroken (The Secret Life of Amy Bensen, #3.5) by Lisa Renee Jones

If anyone could find a cover with dice sitting on something...
Partners in Crime by Agatha Christie

Here are some other options for the open classes but I don't expect to get to them until July:

Cozy Mystery with berries: The this tagged cozy mystery and I'm pretty sure the cake on this one has cherries on it... are cherries considered berries?
Buried Bones (Sarah Booth Delaney, #2) by Carolyn Haines

Happy face: You can't see her smile, but she is clearly happy. Plus it's about the eyes. The cover we have is an eye sad with tears, this one has happy eyes. Could work...
One Little White Lie by Loretta Hill

Also happy smiling face:
Love After Dark (Gansett Island, #13) by Marie Force - June
Substitute Bride (Beaufort Brides #2) by Noelle Adams - July

Another levitation option: find a cover with a person laying on something, this cover looks like she is floating
Beyond Pain (Beyond, #3) by Kit Rocha

Em (emmolga) i have these lying around Wyrd Sisters (Discworld, #6; Witches #2) by Terry Pratchett Strawberry Shortcake Murder (Hannah Swensen, #2) by Joanne Fluke which i think can be used for the cauldron and the cozy mystery. both have quite low page counts though, so i'm still on the look out for better ones.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments For levitating charm, what about Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire and then Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children, #3) by Seanan McGuire - doorway is on ground in 1st one then in sky in the next? Reading later this week.

Have an audio for scales I can listen to this week - The Confession by John Grisham .

LaurLa, I think I might have to steal Aphrodite's Kiss from your spells - but you're used to that by now ;-) - as it seems like a good fit for the fire-making charm indeed!

Cathy, I do like that idea of the doors, yes! (LaurLa, I think that means I'm going to steal Every Heart a Doorway from you, too *cough*)

Em & Cathy - cauldron and scale books look good! Em, so does the berry cozy. LaurLa, I don't think cherries are berries. But I'm not sure now without checking since someone told me today that melons were berries, too. I'm still not sure that person might not have been joking but.. you never know haha.

Yeah, yeah - just keep stealing my books!! I think every time you take a spell book, Miss E, you need to personally read to replace it with a book that works for the letter you stole it from... Mwah ha ha ;-)

Just kidding! But do please be careful about taking U and I... those are precious commodities!

QUIDDITCH PLAYERS

Here is a little update on the Points awarded for books read during the game.

Rules for Round Two have also been slightly modified/updated, so please read through carefully!

Start date of the new round is June 23rd, so the coming Saturday. Please head over to the dungeon for team planning, thanks! :-)

message 1012: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I thought I would finish at least one more book this weekend but nope. I enjoy Ready Player One when I'm reading it but I've got so many books and I am way behind on the buddy read. I tried to keep up but to many other books. I'm also feeling a bit of fantasy overload.

Given how much time I've had recently for reading, not much, I'm going just cheer for Slythern team.

message 1013: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Yeah, reading time is scarce for me at the moment as well and the first Quidditch match kept me from reading when I did have a bit of time at home, so I really hope someone else can step up to do the announcer thing this time around or I will never finish even half the books I still want to read this month.

So I can really understand you just wanting to cheer instead of actively play :-)

Ready Player One takes a bit of concentration to read because there is just sooo much information in there, but it is a great read. Can't wait to see your reaction when you get to the last third of the book! :-)

message 1014: by Natasha (last edited Jun 18, 2018 07:21AM) (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments So I finished Seriously... I'm Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres for the cheering charm. I'm still on hold for Playing with Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl, #1) by Gena Showalter for the fire charm.

As long as you get it within the next month, it's all good :-)

message 1016: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Exactly, Ready Player One takes more time for me to read. All those references are slowing it down for me. I'm hoping it will pick up after I he through part one. I started Red Sister instead of finishing part one of Ready Player One last night.

I've noticed with most of the buddy reads I've been reading serious books. I like a mix light and serious. So far I only have one BR in July and I am thinking I might not add anymore. Although, I keep seeing books I'm interested in.

message 1017: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Eldarwen wrote: "As long as you get it within the next month, it's all good :-)"

I definitely should. The ebooks can be borrowed for 3 weeks and it's been 6 days since I put in the request so hopefully soon.

message 1018: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
I was itching to start Red Sister last night but after reading the first (small) paragraph, I knew that it was probably going to keep me up longer than it should, so I decided not to. I am instead finally making progress with Red Rising and should finish that one tomorrow. (I won't have time to finish it tonight as I'm going to a concert.)

Are you enjoying Red Sister?

message 1019: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I've enjoyed the first 43 pages. It has a lot of set up so far and flashbacks. I normally don't care for that (an excellent example is in Daughter of Smoke and Bone it over powered the present story) but I think it is a nice balance. So far I'm thinking I'll be in the it was an excellent read. However I'm only 40 pages in so lots can change.

message 1020: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Red Rising was one of those books I immediately liked. I'm not sure why but it swept me up and I think I read it in mostly one sitting. I've been meaning to read the third book Morning Star but haven't had a chance yet. If there ends up being a BR for that I would join.

message 1021: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Just realized my weekend read Catch of the Day is probably a fluffy chick-lit. I'm on the fence because of something that happened in chapter 19, most of the book was fluffy though. I'm checking to see if others reading it think it is fluffy.

message 1022: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments And we say it is fluffy. I think we needed one more of those and I believe two from our team read it so we should have that covered now. I'll update my completion post when I get on my computer. Limited on the app. I wish it wasn't so but no reply, edit, view spoiler, or add book links for the phone app.

Our second match will be against Ravenclaw and can be found HERE.

The countdown to when the match starts on Saturday is HERE .

LaurLa, Natasha and Tea are going to be on their brooms for this one.
Thank you, ladies!! :-)
I hope you'll have fun!

Please read the rules carefully before Saturday and if you have questions, you know where to ask!

I had some serious issues with it at the beginning and they persist a little because I'm not all too fond of the main character. The story as such is not bad, though it's pretty similar to other books I've read but at least part III and IV are keeping me interested because I want to know what else is coming.

I'm not yet sure if I'm going to continue with the series, but I have another 70 pages to read, so we'll see. :-)

message 1026: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I get what you mean about similarities with other books. I kept think it was exactly like another book but set on Mars. I went back and read my review and I was wrong in thinking it grabbed me immediately. I didn't care for the opening and it was only after Eo event that I really started liking it.

Feel free to head over to the BR thread and throw in a comment or two :-) Or read through what we're all saying hehe.

message 1028: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I really don't need another distraction. I need to actually finish up at least one of the 5 books I'm reading before I start two more this weekend. Library due dates will be some motivation I'm hoping. I ran out of renewals on three of the books I'm currently reading so got to finish them.

Heheh, Tower Teams is terrible when it comes to buddy reads and having too many books on the go!!

Go go go!! Do we need to cheer you on as well? ;-)

message 1030: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Thanks, but I don't think cheering is necessary. Let's save it for the quiddich team. They will need it.

Hehe, true true. Cheering and support can go a long way! :-)

message 1032: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments So I was looking at what's left and saw that we still one more part for our creature. Apologies if this has been discussed before and I missed it, how about a tail for the final part? I was thinking of a mermaid or horse tail.

message 1033: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Horse tail would be cool - in my opinion anyway.

I have a few lying around that I could get to at some point, probably, maybe, hopefully? Haha.

If you have a particular one in mind or don't mind grabbing one, I'd say, go for it! :-)

message 1034: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Can you imagine?

We only have 9 books left to read and then classes are completely done. NINE! And it seemed like such a mammoth task at first.

Very, very well done, team!! :-)

message 1035: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Only nine left for classes? That's so crazy!!

message 1036: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Right??

After those 9, we can go ahead and read larger books with celestial objects in title to replace the smaller ones we currently have, and remove the doubles as well for more variety. Or change around Defence against the Dark Arts, Charms or Transfiguration if we find better pairings.

But in essence, all slots would be filled (apart from History of Magic but that is extremely flexible as we can use whatever we want for it - we could even read specific books to make up an awesome essay).

message 1037: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments I like the idea of reading specific books for the history of magic essay. We can come up with some crazy stories.

message 1038: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
It would definitely give us some artistic and creative leeway, and it would be cool to combine Kathleen's and Annalisa's ideas somehow because they were both good.

The short and spiffy that makes you laugh and the longer, mysterious bit that makes you want to read more.

message 1039: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments For history of magic does the page number matter? For some of the classes seem like more points for more pages but not all.

message 1040: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
No, page numbers don't matter for the History of Magic class.
It's actually only Arithmancy (for obvious reasons) and Astronomy that take page numbers into account.

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
Argh! I just vented on the Red Rising thread about the book haha. Feel better now, so I can hopefully finish off those last 30 pages of the book before I fall asleep and finally, finally knock one of my BRs off my list.

Next one starts tomorrow and I haven't even started the BOM book yet *headdesk*

message 1042: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments So we could pick book titles that don't fit either classes or spells and use those for history of magic. Do we have any?

message 1043: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
There are a few unmarked books on the spreadsheet at the moment. So we could use those (except for the I title, because I think LaurLa needs that for spells) and whatever we read next - or what we will read specifically to make for an interesting essay.

message 1044: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
I can put the list of currently available books here tomorrow. Right now, my bed is calling and I have another 30 pages to go. If I can keep my eyes open ;-)

Good night!

message 1045: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Red Sister is good so far. I'm hoping to have some good reading time tonight for it and catch up with it. Then I need to read Ready Play One. I agree to many BRs. I noticed a few new books today and I can't get them from the library yet so I was saved from joining.

Mmhh, Red Sister has an interesting start indeed! I didn't get far on the bus this morning because I kept dozing off but what I did manage to read was great. I love a good prologue!

message 1048: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments The prologue is so good. Actually I found all of it good. Also, easy to read.

I've got to finish Ready Player One by Saturday and I'm not sure if I can do it. It is not a book I can read quickly. Do you remember if it picked up after part one?

message 1049: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13646 comments Mod
It picks up quite a bit once the first gate is cleared. And then there's even more stuff that is thrown in - so good :-)

If you like audiobooks, this one is very easy to listen to. Read by Wil Wheaton.

message 1050: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments If it picks up there is a really good chance I will finish it. The opening was/is slow and I've been struggling to set aside the time for it.
